What are some good choices in the low to medium price range that will allow fog, etc. to work for CM.

I run a AMD 6K at 450MHz and I just installed a nVIDIA TNT2 M64 with 32MBs of RAM and it works great. Shop around for the best deal. You should'nt have to pay over $100. Wayne ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 2. I've seen this happen in both the Gold Demo and the final game; at certain times the shift key function stops working. Instead of having to hit shift and then a letter, I can hit the letter key and get my hotkey to work. Is this just my machine or has anyone else seen this? 3. I get the same effect with a TNT2 Riva. Just hit shift-O to see out of the building. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 4. Welcome to the forum. CM is worth the time and effort to learn the game and update your computer with whatever it needs. I just spent 3 weeks having my CPU replaced and installing a video card and it's worth it. I'm running an AMD 6K 450MHz with a new TNT2 Riva, and my turn load is under 1 minute so something is slowing down your machine. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 5. I just installed a nvidia TNT2 video card and downloaded a driver from nvidia's sight. In reading the instructions, it says to put 2 disks in the floppy drive. How exactly do you create these disks? What do I copy on these disks? Wayne ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Maximus: The AI is kicking my ASS!! Or maybe my guys just suck, I don't know. No, but seriously. Seems like the brutality has been picked up since the demos. I'm losing Heavy Tanks just as easily as little ones. And the infantry combat is wild!

Bone up on your infantry skills. We're in the real war now, basic training is over. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 7. Danno: I just bought a Jaton Riva TNT2 with 32MB. I hope it works. Thanks for the response. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Danno: Wayne, I am using the Guillemot Cougar, what do you need help on?

I want to know how well it works and whether I should buy one. I can get one for around $90.00. Thanks. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.

 11. [by the way. Here are the latest drivers for the SiS 530. They're DirectX 7.0 compatible (v. 1.07). There are eight files that you need to download (get the right set for whichever version of Windows you're running) and copy into one directory. You'll need to extract each of the files (they're all self-extracting archives) and then run the setup program that gets extracted from the first one. 12. It's me again. I have a SiS 530 graphics accelerator with 4MB running with an AMD K6 at 450 MHz. I'm thinking that sometime I'll have to upgrade my system. What are some good choices in video cards on a tight budget. I want to bring my VRAM up to at least 16MB. Excuse me for being such a pest on this subject.
 13. I don't know if anyone noticed the artillery airbursts or not. Are these real airbursts or are the trees causing it? Something else I noticed. When one of my machinegun crews was walking along, someone said "argh" and one of the crew went missing. Did he stumble and fallout or was he shot by a sniper? ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 14. Bullethead, I'm an old muzzleloader myself. I even learned to build my own guns. Your'right, they're a great way to learn to shoot. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 15. Welcome jonp. In this game you learn by doing. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. I'm a newbie too and I've learned alot this past week just by reading the posts. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 16. My basic question is, if the demo is running alright with some jerkyness in moving the camera, will I be able to handle the full game?
 17.
quote:
Originally posted by grunto: you've got roughly the same setup as me except a 450 central processing unit (cpu) where mine's an mmx166. i've got a 2mb video card with 8mb monster accelerator... the monster was $39 or something. so i take it you meant 8mb of video ram? - Video ROM 8 byte, SiS 530 for graphics - i've got 10 and it works ok... processing turns should be a lot faster for you than it is for me. in light of the fact that bigger scenarios are going to be in the release, i may need to upgrade the cpu and the video ram. you may want more video ram. do you have a video card or is your video on the mb (mainboard)? if it's on the mb you need to disable it in the bios/cmos (the computer's hardware setup screens, usually accessed by hitting f1 during the early boot power-on-self-test (post). on compaqs and gateways and the like the keystroke varies but on most clones it's f1. i'm asking about the on-board video because sis brand chips are often found there in that 'conflaguration' -g- andy

I don't have a video card. If the big scenarios in the game aren't any worse than VoT than I'll probably leave it as is. My disability check only goes so far. Good luck with your machine. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 18. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll just have to wait to see how the game works when I get it. Playing the demo today, I noticed that moving the camera positions and panning the game is a bit jerky but I was used to this before. It's something I can live with. Thanks. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Mark IV: Smoothbore means higher muzzle velocity- no rifling in the barrel to increase friction. The rounds are stabilized by fins, instead of spinning.

Sound like the main gun on a tank is a rocket launcher.

 21.
quote:
Originally posted by desert fox: Ok, to take a little pressure off of us while we all wait in anticipation for the game I pose this question. If you were a german or american who served during WW2 and were allowed to choose a weapon (respective sides) what one would you choose.

If I'm German armor, the Panther tank; American, a Pershing or the deepest hole I can find. If I'm German infantry, any submachine gun; American, the Garand or Thomson. If I'm a company or battalion commander in either army, as much artillery as I can get as often as I can get it. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 22. I am a complete novice when it comes to the computer, so I'm asking the advice of those on this forum who are experts. I have a Compaq Presario 5360 with; AMD-k6-2 450 MHz, Video ROM 8 byte, SiS 530 for graphics, 60 Megs of RAM, OS is Windows 98 4.10. My question is, will it be able to handle the larger scenarios in CM? The Gold Demo plays well but slows down a bit when there's alot of smoke. I've noticed that the game is slow in VoT when I move the line of sight and targeting lines around after the full number of units are exposed on the board. Will I be able to play the larger scenarios and run the improved graphics that will be in the final game? Thank you. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
 23. When I started to play cardboard and paper wargames about 18 yrs ago, I found a little gem called Squad Leader and fell in love with it. When it became Advanced Squad leader I still loved it, though it became overly complicated. Squad Leader was the best of it's day and I believe that Combat Mission is going to be the same in the computer wargame genre. Combat Mission takes what was best in Squad Leader and greatly improves upon it in computer gaming. This is the best game I've ever played and I look forward to many hours of delight in creating my own version of the Great World War II. ------------------ Blessed be the Lord my strength who teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight.
