1.
quote:
Originally posted by patboivin: Which newspaper was it from, I wonder? Not one of the Conrad Black papers, I hope.

It was from CKRB 1010 Radio. The date was June 5, 1973. Sinclair had an editorial spot on there, much like Dick Smyth has on 680 & City. He was as famous in his day as Lorne Greene was during WW2.
2.
quote:
Originally posted by ncounio: Therefore in my mind Titan, you are not the one on the narrow path (I was rather thinking of this editorialist...) Nicolas

The editorialist, Gordon Sinclair, was a well-known Canadian political correspondent and on-air personality. My granddad used to take me 'round his place in the summer. He died some time ago. That editorial is circa 1972/73 if I'm not mistaken.
3. ACW open order tactics are more akin to WW2 style infantry combat than is apparent on the surface. In fact, I defy anyone to locate a primary source (that's a first-hand account) of fighting "shoulder to shoulder". Using terrain, cover and, yes, even lying down, were commonplace. As to massed Napoleonic formations, although the men fought in close order, the formations themselves were NOT static. Maneuver was the key to victory. Paintings, which form our primary imagery of the period, capture only an instant of time, and thus we get the impression of static lines blazing away at one another. Don't be fooled by the painters (or the movie-makers).
4. Yes, a great many stayed on with the Canucks. I think too there was some worry that they might not be put back into the line and/or would have to go through training all over. (boot camp twice -- yuck).
5. I know of at least one recorded example of a Japanese destroyer being sunk by .50 cal fire. Hope that answers your question regarding their effectiveness.
6. My g/f tracked down that lone, elusive, missing piece to complete my Confederate Cavalry officer's uniform. Ain't the dear things grand?
7. Desert Fox, I'm not exactly sure if you're implying that the shorter 75mm is not modelled in CM, but both versions of the JgPz IV are in. Just a point of clarification. If I have misunderstood you, ignore me
8. To answer the original question, there were not "many", but there were perhaps a few thousand in total. Most were given the option of a discharge when the US entered the war. That famous poem written by a "Canadian" pilot during the Battle of Britain was in fact written by an American in the RCAF.
9. That sort of warfare disappeared in the middle of the 18th Century. I'm not feeling particularly essay-ish tonight, so to answer your question: Yes, it's just a myth.
10. Just to clarify... You wanted to get beaten so you set yourself up with some of the best troops in the game and gave them the most powerful possible support?
11. If I had a dollar for every tank I lost after seeing that horrible, horrible grenade arcing through the air... It's just a representation, mind you, and indicates a close assault in progress. That is, if I understand how the game works.
12. Wow, that speech is OLD I remember hearing that when I was a kid. [This message has been edited by Formerly Babra (edited 07-11-2000).]
13. Shipped June 21st. Arrived June 29th. Toronto, Canada.
14. I only barely squeeked out of that one -- even my reinforcements got mauled. And they're not Brits
15. That's what's great about CM. There's only one Polish scenario included, but the capability is there to create as many as you want. I for one am hoping CM2 and CM3 etc are discrete games with improved game engines. The current engine is excellent, but, just like in Ferraris, there's always room for improvement.
16. I've enjoyed both the scenario and the operation. They are tough from both sides. Ya gotta respect the power of the Tiger.
17. As eloquently expressed above, both PBEM and TCP/IP have their place. I just love playing a human opponent any way I can. I just got my first tank kill against a human this very day, and boy was it sweet...
18. (So there is a use for smileys -- well that particular one anyway)
19. Don't know what you mean by a "burned CD" but everything I got was top notch. The manual is beautiful and far better than any other game I've seen recently.
20. Try the CMHQ Annex at: http://cmhq.tzo.com/
21. A Wirbelwind among autumn trees. A tank duel at 1600 metres. A Crocodile breaking into the defences. A 120mm mortar barrage. The sound of 20mm's coming to life. Gunning down that fleeing crew. A perfectly executed ambush. Three Stuarts, One Tiger. Heavy building collapsing under a barrage. Sherman II sneaking up behind Panther. Prowling through the burning wrecks in search of survivors.
22. has anyone tackled the Red Barricades map yet?
23. I send them out on mine clearing detail. Come to think of it, I do that with prisoners too
