Are you saying you used smoke to cover your flanks? That might not have been a good idea, as it gave the AI cover to move its tanks into a good position. Maybe you should try leaving a few inf scouts on each flank to report enemy flanking movements. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton

Cheer up, your AT gun may get shots at their rear, and it will take a long time for the enemy to react. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton

WOW! Plus, need book and movie suggestions

The Bitter Woods, by John Eisenhower. It covers the battle of the bulge, and provides a lot of accounts of small unit battles, useful for setting up user scenarios. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
What's the upper pipe in howitzers for?
109 Gustav replied to Jarmo's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I'll make that mod. Should I also make one that replaces the sound of arty about to land (thrummmmm) with "right a little... back left... down 10 yards..." in a hamster voice, to simulate the nose cam guiding these rounds in to the target? How do you capture enemies?
109 Gustav replied to cactusjack's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Be sure to guard captured units until you move them off the map. Just like in real life, if they feel they have a good chance, they will escape. Units that are low on ammo, have broken, or are leaderless are usually still good for guarding prisoners after their frontline duty is done. Vehicle crews also work. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
Artillery works real good for taking out pillboxes, especially ones that your troops can't approach well. 105 mm will penetrate about half the time. It takes an average of maybe 12 barrages to KO one box. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton

A lot of German duds were because of sabotage. I remember reading that when slave laborers were forced to make panzerfausts, they would mix sand in with the explosive, which would keep it from detonating. If one worker can sabotage 50 panzerfausts a day on the assembly line, that works out to an awful high percentage of defective fausts, maybe enough to be modeled by CM. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton

Are there more AARs, other than the ones on CMHQ? They're great for picking up strategy tips. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton

For Combat Mission, my favorite snack would is fried Spam. It's even better for breakfast! You think I'm joking about breakfast, don't you? ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
Most Hits on a Pershing...ever?
109 Gustav replied to russellmz's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Was the Pershing up on a hill with the enemy tanks below? If so, being up high would have helped his armor by sloping it more, increasing the chances of a riccochet. Was he hull down or partially hidden from the enemy? ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
Effect of fog on hit probability
109 Gustav replied to piekat's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
You call that bad luck, on one occasion I'd painstakinly gotten a zook to within 30 yards of an StuG, and had him manage to fire 5 rounds, all of which hit and penetrated, none of them for any damage. The sixth round finally got the Stug. The tank's crew probably started ignoring the zook after a few hits: Woosh...Clonk! "Another hit, commander. Want me to kill that cursed Ami?" "Nah, I wanted some air holes in this friggin steel box anyway. Let him fire away, its not like he'll kill us." ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
On the CM website, there are two graphical examples of armor penetration against different tanks, and a promise to make more avalible. Are they going to be avalible for viewing anytime, or are they already somewhere else? ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton

How about Tanks ramming other tanks in battle???
109 Gustav replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
To ram a sherm, the tiger would first have to get close enough, highly unlikley when one considers the sherm's speed and turning advantages over the tiger. Anyway, if there were 4 shermans left on the battlefield, getting close to one would probably mean giving another a flank shot. Better to just retreat the tiger, and use it as a moving machinegun nest for the rest of the game. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
Tanks donĀ“t engage small guns with main gun
109 Gustav replied to Drifter's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Didn't the Germans usually carry less AP ammo than the allies, especially their assault guns? If your tank was out of AP ammo, using the mg against infantry would probably be a better choice than firing antitank rounds. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
A replay of the entire battle would be nice...

I agree that it would be a great feature, but BTS has already told us, in several posts on this topic, that it ain't gonna happen, at least not for a long time. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -

probs with voodoo 3 on G3 333mhz
109 Gustav replied to MaQ's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I haven't heard of any previous problems with G3s, but iMacs have had a couple conflicts with their 3d card. I believe the solution most people came up with was to manually set the monitor res to 640x480. Try it, and see if that helps. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton -
Tank vs Tank engagements: Advice please

I've seen pictures of sherms and other allied vehicles in the battle of the bulge being "winterized" by draping white sheets over them. That would be an odd texture to model. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton

Captured Vehicles & Equipment Revisited
109 Gustav replied to John Kettler's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Captured equipment would certainly make it easier to compare two different Allied tanks, or two different German ones. For example, which is really a better tank, the Panther or the Tiger 1? The only real way to find out would be to have them fight, and you can't do that unless one is on the opposite side. When I played Over the Reich and achtung spitfire, I would sometimes simulate dogfights of friendly airplanes, so I could compare planes on the same side (spitfire vs mustang was interesting). However, because planes on the same side can't shoot each other, I would just assume some had been shot down after an enemy plane got on their tail. ------------------ There is nothing certain about war except that one side won't win. -Ian Hamilton
