Buying CM2 because......
109 Gustav replied to Iron Chef Sakai's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Buying CM2 no matter what, even if I have to go without non-cafeteria food for the rest of the year, which will be quite likely. Doesn't really matter, who has time for eating when there's more CM? -
Of course, The Last Defense is also a good site. There's even a page of links to other CM websites.

Poll for a new site name :)
109 Gustav replied to Pascal DI FOLCO's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)

quote:
Originally posted by Pascal DI FOLCO: ...Else I request your help for another cool name : it's obviously has to mention "Combat Mission" or at least "CM"...

Why? Der Kessel, The Last Defense, Boots and Tracks, and Desert Fox Desert Rats are all excellent sites, and they don't have CM in their names. My advice is to name it whatever you want, and if you do a good job, people will come no matter what it's called. -
It's Madmatt's birthday so...

quote:
Originally posted by Scipio: I also noticed that a burning tank never explodes with some delay. This should happen sometimes. Would be a nice effect, and also a bad surprise for close infantry.

Actually, I tested this out awhile back, shooting up sherms with Pak43 88s. ( )If there's infantry on the ground next to the tanks, the explosion won't hurt them, or even scare them. Possibly this could be changed for CMBB, though.

2. There's a German gun mod on The Last Defense, but I can't remember if it contains infantry guns.

PzIV tactical suggestions?
109 Gustav replied to Commissar's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
They are useful in combination with panthers, or when used in groups of 3-5. Individually they just don't cut it, they die too easily. They are quite useful on the attack, though. Use panthers in overwatch, covering the advancing IVs from hull down. The IVs are better equipped to handle surprises and flank shots due to their faster turret rotation. Besides, if you're going to lose a tank to an ambushing flank shot, it might as well be the IV and not the more expensive panther. When on the defense, try to use them from ambush, in the same manner as the StuG and jagdpanzers, perpindicular to the enemy's line of advance. Hilltop shoot and scooting also works reasonably well. They are a good, but not a great, infantry support tank. The high velocity cannon means that you can keep them a little further back from the enemy's troops and still cause plenty of damage. Also, the skirts on the IVH and IVJ will help against the occasional zook round, although they shouldn't be relied on too heavily. -
Bazooka? Why's it called that?

Sure, I'll test it out. I'm about an average PBEMer, but I'm pretty good on defense. Send me the file!

COMBAT MISSIONS: Bad News Folk's
109 Gustav replied to Manx's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)

quote:
Originally posted by Michael Dorosh: 109 Gustav has the right idea - put older pages on Angelfire's server and simply link between the two. I have a website on Canadian uniforms in WW II that is actually hosted between two dozen accounts.

That's how I'm running The Last Defense, as well. The terrain mods are split between two 50 meg accounts, and everything else is on the main account, which will also have to be split fairly soon. Uploading files can be a pain, since I have to log on to more than one account, but it's the only way I can run The Last Defense on such a low budget. ($0) Besides, I haven't gotten any terrain mods for quite awhile, so it really doesn't matter. -
COMBAT MISSIONS: Bad News Folk's
109 Gustav replied to Manx's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Sorry to hear about that, Manx. How many megs/gigs of space does Missions take up? Maybe you could move some of the old mods to Angelfire sites, then link them to Combat Missions? Let me know if I can help out in any way with The Last Defense. -
Well, it was a dull day, so I tested this out, using 8 church crocs facing away from 4 37mm flak guns and 4 pak38s. I didn't get any trailer hits, but because the croc's rear armor is only 50mm, most of the tanks were knocked out on the first or second round anyway. So I would say that no, the trailer isn't modeled.
-
Germans will sometimes, but not very often, get tungsten rounds for the pak38 50mm AT gun. They're very useful, since they can take out sherms on a front hull hit. Still, the German supply of tungsten during the war was very limited, and mostly used for machine tools, so you shouldn't count on getting any rounds.

quote:
Originally posted by *Captain Foobar*: Thanks guys, you are mucho helpful. Now, this doesnt mean that the modslaves can rest easy, I want them competing for my business.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the pay rate for a mod slave is about the same as the rate for a CM webmaster. Perhaps BTS will take pity on us and give mod slaves and webmasters free copies of CMBB to reward us for making their game better? edit: CMBB, not CMBO! [ 10-18-2001: Message edited by: 109 Gustav ]

If you want to use the 7 and 8 views, turn on unit bases. You can't distinguish much detail, but you can get a good idea of the general pattern of advance. This is especially important for maps that aren't fought in a streight battle line. If you are defending against an attack originating from two different corners of the map, you'd better have a good overall plan, or you're likely to leave a hole in your lines.
