  1. I've always wondered this but never thought to ask the collective here... what is the meaning of the different colored lines when you're targeting something? For example, when I was playing VoT today, I used one of my 105 spotters to target a bunker... the targeting line was dark blue. When I used my 81 spotter to target a house in the village, the line was green. And when I targeted one of my mortars at another house, the targeting line was like a dark red color. (In all these examples, the target was in range and in LOS) I know the difference between the target area line and the object target line, but this color variation has me kinda stumped. Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks...
  2. Ummm... and very pro-Mac person here, too (although I didn't get my first Mac til last December) I love my little machine
  3. Oooh! Oooh! Over here, I've got one too ~ And you're right... for the price, it's a very slick machine, although the non-upgradeable aspect is a downer... but by the time I need to upgrade, I'll hopefully have the money for the G4 (or G5, whatever's current)
  4. Ok, here's a question... now that we've cleared up the "Target Next" question, thanks to Madmatt's omniscience, I'm wondering how the concentrated firing circle (for the Germans) in the Valley works? Do you have to lure units into the circle? Is there some sort of trigger? I'd like to try it, but I can't figure out how...
  5. I'm running an 8mb card on the Mac, but I'm running a little better than middle of the road system... everything's running fine on my comp (transparencies, smoke, etc)... although it has locked up twice for no apparent reason.
  6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by pford: What were you doing when it froze? Were you moving you viewing position around the map? I am interested because I have a similar configuration and frequent freezes. pford<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yeah, the two times it's frozen up my computer so it had to be restarted were when I was doing some zooming in and out, checking the terrain... it doesn't do it every time, just twice in the four or five games I've played thus far. And just so you know, I'm running an iMac DV SE (G3400) w 192 mbRAM and the 8mb ATI Rage 128 card. I haven't seen anyone else post a freeze up problem like this, so I'm not sure exactly why it does, unless it just overloads my card or something. Any ideas, Steve?
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Ol' Blood & Guts: The key in Valley while playing the Allies is ARTILLERY and those Sherman 105s. PS. Never could get my flamethrowers up into battle without getting them killed. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Ditto all OB&G said... artillery is the way to go, at least to start. I used my 105 and 81s on the large hil in the center and moved my other 105 up the left to a clear spot on that hill. After the shelling took out all the bunkers and guns, I turned the spotters to the town and laid waste to a few buildings, just in case. And the 105 Shermans are wonderful as well... Oh, and I DID manage to get my flamethrowers up into the action... they managed to crisp up a couple of guys before they caught the dreaded "eliminated" tag...
  8. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Dr. Zhivago: Older versions of the Mac OS? I have 9.04 (the newest), and I have the following two bugs: 1: Instead of "Axis," the name for German units and their name on the "scoresheet" at the end reads: Apple Grayscale. That's just WEIRD. 2: It seems that the resolution always zooms to 640x480, which is annoying as the beta demo played fine on my Voodoo2 in 800x600. Were these fixed in the new patch? Thanks!<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I don't think 9.0.4 caused those problems, unless it was a conflict with your video card. I've got 9.0.4 and the ATI 128 card, and everything's fine. Although I was kinda surprised when, while playing Valley last night at 4 a.m. local time that the demo locked up and my comp had to be restarted. But thanks to BTS's new autosave feature, I didn't miss a beat. That little detail is a true lifesaver Oh, and in case Steve or Charles reads this post, thanks again for all your hard work and thanks so much (for about the 6th time) for making CM for Mac... so few blockbuster games come out for our side, but CM is all I need now
  9. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Big Time Software: Someone else noted the AI totally shocking him over by dropping smoke and pulling a flanking move at the same time. Steve read my post --basking in the glow-- [This message has been edited by Miyamoto Musashi (edited 05-10-2000).]
  10. I'm really in awe of the tweaked graphics, like everyone else is, as well as the other little touches thrown in... but the most impressive improvement to me thus far is the AI. I just finished the gold version of CE, and it was probably the most difficult round of that scenario I've played thus far. I lost two Shermans, but that could always happen in the beta... what REALLY impressed me was that, as my remaining 3 75s were pounding the Germans into goo, their arty spotter called a bunch of smoke down on my tanks and, at the same time, some small volksgrenadier and smg squads tried to flank me from my right while my tanks were blinded temporarily. Fortunately, I had some reserve squads sitting conveniently in the path of the would-be counterattackers, but it was a really smart and gutsy move. I was very impressed... although the 20 or 30 smoke bombs dropped on my tanks took a nasty bite out of my frame rate. But so far for me, the much improved AI is the most exciting new feature...
  11. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Fionn: Most of us testers have gotten scores in the 90s vs the computer <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yup, 94 on CE is the highest I've gotten against the AI... although I'm most proud of the 90 I got playing as the Allies in LD
  12. Boy, Steve's been posting a lot of messages/replies lately... definitely a sign that the worst of his work must be over
  13. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by przy: We can't have everything down to the most minute detail unfortunatly. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yeah, I kinda figured that would be a big hit on most CPUs... like I said before, I pretty much knew that it was wishful thinking, but it would be kinda cool...
  14. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Blacksilver: The members of this forum (who, after all, have managed 43,000 posts on 4100 topics for an unreleased game) can do the same thing for CM and BTS. Once the Gold Demo comes out, let's designate a grassroots marketing activity of the day or week or whatever. Let's get CM previewed and reviewed on Gamespot, and the Intro movie run on Gamespot TV, just from the sheer volume of noise we make. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Howard Johnson is right! I myself would be totally in favor of at least making an attempt to rock the gaming boat. It would be something surreal, however, to see any mention of CM on Dreamcast TV (also known as Gamespot TV in some circles). But I do think that CM has just as much right to be reviewed on the big boys' sites as any other game that comes out (most of which can't hold a candle to CM). So here's one vote in favor of making a public assault on the establishment
  15. This may have already been asked/covered, but I was watching an episode of the old WW2 TV show Combat! today and got to thinking... in the snowy scenarios, will troops and tanks leave tracks that can be followed? I'm thinking probably not, but after watching Vic Morrow march around in the snow for an hour, it just crossed my mind
  16. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Apocalypse2000: The sales people better get on the ball and kick this thing off. If this will be the best wargame ever why not build on that statement with a tv commercial or something. And why no mention of release dates anywhere/ Ummm can someone tell me if it is coming out anytime soon??<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> LOL... a TV commercial?!? It seems that that would be the last thing on Steve and Charles' minds right now. Commercial advertising costs money... even ads in print mags cost a good chunk of cash for anything substantial (i.e. something that people will see without having to throw their glasses on to read it), although I could picture CM in a print ad much more easily than I could picture it in a TV spot. As for a release date, CM is coming in late May, the gold demo's coming in mid May, and this is just as set in stone as you need (as opposed to a firm release date, say, May 27th or something). Most of the people on this board have been waiting for months and months for this game, not weeks or days, so be patient. BTW, if you didn't know the release "date," I'm assuming you haven't seen the CM intro/preview movie yet?
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Schuggerbaby: PS. How do I kill the tiger tank with my men if all anti-tank equipment is either out of ammo or destroyed?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> In Last Defence you have to wait until your reinforcements arrive ( Three Hellcat Tank destroyers), until then, TAKE COVER! When I play LD against the AI, I don't show my face at all until the TDs show up. I do use the mortars to ping as many of the HTs as possible, but I lay real low until the big guns show up... hoping that the Tiger and StuGs will be in a bad position when the cavalry shows up on the hill... now it's a different story if (as occasionally happens) I lose all 3 of my TDs in one or two turns... yikes
  18. <sigh> yet another wargame that comes out strictly for the Wintel crowd... guess I'll have to skip on SP and play Harpoon 3 until the CM gold demo arrives on the scene... and thanks again, BTS, for inviting the Mac users to the CM party
  19. I don't know what you mean by upgraded, but I'm running on a G3 400 with 192 mb of RAM and an ATI Rage 128 w/ 8mb and CM flies along in all its glory...
  20. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Fred: Hasbro...take a look what they have done to Avalon Hill...MegaCorps...I do not like them. All IMHO. Fred<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Plus the fact that they don't even acknowledge the existence of computers other than Wintel machines... a Macintosh game from the Hasbro conglomerate would be enough to send me into a state of shock (if they ever bothered to make a game I was interested in)...
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Ol' Blood & Guts: [The reason that they aren't showing blood, every soldier, and dead bodies IS because of computer limitations at this time. Maybe in a couple more years by the time CM4 comes out and everybody is using 2 Gigahertz computers, then we'll see every man represented. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yep yep... how would BTS do it under the current system? wait til 4 guys of the 12-man squad are dead or injured and then make one of the three representative guys explode in a red cloud? Soldier of Fortune is cool (even though I'm on a Mac and can only watch my brother play it), but I don't think blood belongs in this sort of game. I'm just as anxious to get it even with the "unrealistic" deaths... so there
  22. I'm interested in playing a PBEM (first-timer here too), but I'm afraid I couldn't talk you through it. I'm kinda fuzzy on the whole thing myself... but I'm game to learn as well if any of the resident pool sharks here want to give a newbie a chance
  23. Ok, I know I've already posted things about WWII diecast a couple of times, but I wanted to say that I picked up a 1/35 scale Tiger I model by Tamiya this weekend and had one of the most enjoyable weekends I've had in a while... I guess it sounds kinda weird, but I just started working on it and finished it up in a couple days, painting and detailing included. Those models are really nice and fairly simple to put together (especially if instead of regular model glue you use Quiktite super glue... dries faster and is much more stable... unless you accidentally glue something in the wrong place... then you're outta luck ) But if you're interested, do a search for "Tamiya Tiger" on eBay or one of the other auction sites... they go fairly cheap (under $20) and are a lot of fun to mess with... FWIW
