That probably means that europians like myself can twiddle their thumbs for a few days while this board gets flooded with "AWESOME" mails of US-residents, since those @%$@ guys get their copies earlier ....sigh Grtz S Bakker

That building ATE my unit !
Bakker@home replied to Bakker@home's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
It seems that OBG could be right. (Sorry Ron ). But what a drama! Picture it; Lt. Steel sees his 'front squad' pinned in a building on the edge of Reisberg and gets in there to tell them to 'Get Moving!'. The next minute the krauts start to lob mortars on the building and bring it down crashing ! Now Lt Steel finds himself lying in a pile of rubble with one man of his platoon HQ wounded and the 'front squad' virtually wiped out and totally panicked. Besides that the krauts are happily spraying that rubble with bullets.... He decides to move out of their fire by running to the adjacent building, and when he opens that front door ...... SURPRISE ! And we never hear from him again ..... (insert tune from the twilight zone here ...) Grtz S Bakker. PS: Dschugaschwilli what kind of brutes are in there ? Bastards ! That building ATE my unit !
Bakker@home replied to Bakker@home's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Well i don't know ......... you could be right though. I had them charge in there because when their former building collapsed on them they presented themselfs nice targets out in the open .... So the building was not recointered by me, nor were they causiosly moving, just running in there head first. Maybe there could be some guys in there but then the team should be killed the moment they stepped through the front door, all 3 of them ! Maybe some kraut got angry because they didn't wipe their feet ... It just seemed so hilarious ... Grtz S Bakker. -
No kidding ! I was playing a Reisberg PBEM game as the yanks and a platoon HQ (D-0) runs into a building (after the first collapsed on them ) .... and vanishes ! At the precise moment they should enter the deamonic building. I had them selected watching the turn movie and they disappear, are de-selected and are out of my 'unit cycle'. Funny thing is i can still see the 'command lines' to it's units trace into the building. Weird. It was turn 13 though ..... Has anyone else experienced this? Is this an old beta bug ? Grtz S Bakker. PS: I swear i heard it burp afterwards ..... I will never thrust a german building again. Yeah, Good article ! Whoops i seem to have bookmarked that, oh well. Grtz S Bakker [This message has been edited by Bakker@home (edited 04-13-2000).] -
Pfff, where to begin ? 1) What do you mean by <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>"big gun" AFVs<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>, my guess is you mean TD's and AG's. (Tank Destroyers and Assault Guns). 2) TD's and AG's were,as a rule, cheaper to produce then 'turreted' tanks. It was also a way of utilizing 'outdated' chassis as you could mount a bigger gun on the same chassis the you could do in a turret. Their lack of turret however gives them a tactical disadvantage especially when moving. 3) TD's main role was to knock out enemy tanks (hence the name). Since most lacked a turret (soviet, geman) they mainly did this from defensive positions. The americans followed a different approach and boasted turreted, but less well armoured. TD's. 4) AG's were often used to support infantry or armoured units in assault, where there superior HE capability was used to knock out At-guns, MG-nests, Pillboxes ect. 5) for a interesting discussion on the role of the STUG III (a german AG) see http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/Forum1/HTML/003750.html Grtz S Bakker. PS: i'm sure i missed (or mangled )something but this should get this thread underway. PPS: damn Doug beat me to it, and he did it better to [This message has been edited by Bakker@home (edited 04-13-2000).]

Make it a package so the 'big grinned tank commander' can ride out on PC's and MAC's all over the world on their quest for glory and (more importantly) destruction. Grtz S Bakker. PS: can you picture a king tiger with a grinning commander and BITE ME! in big red letters on his rear end ? (Hey, i was referring to the tank! ).

Yeah, a SIGN UP HERE button for Fionn and a BITE ME button for MadMatt. Grtz S Bakker [This message has been edited by Bakker@home (edited 04-13-2000).]

Ok then, so Zimmerit is the wrong suggestion. I was only trying to point out that some textures make the tanks look 'plastic'. The Jagdtiger in the front is a good example of a 'life like texture'. Drool Grtz S Bakker

Maybe y'all can help me... (random curiosity)
Bakker@home replied to John Hough's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
More news, i looked it up at home and from the description John gave it looks like it could be a ASU-57 air transportable tank destroyer (1957+). It fits the description having four roadwheels, no gunshield but an open topped thinly armoured crew compartment with the 57-mm sticking out supported by a bipod. And the gunner and loader sat 'behind and above' the driver and loader. Since it had to be able to be dropped by chute in a special container it was tiny indeed. I lack a scanner though, maybe somebody has a pic of an ASU-57 lying around to upload ? A pic can be found in Fotofax/Zaloga's 'Soviet mechanized firepower today'. Grtz S bakker. Bakker@home replied to Pak40's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Yep, i played the demo. Looks good and has a good fluid 3-d environment. Damn AI managed to beat me in the last 'equally balanced scenario' in the demo a couple of times in a row ..... Grtz S Bakker -
<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> Will BTS let those of us with geforce 2`s or other high end 3D cards, adjust the detail above 3 men in a squad? Is it just a setting in a cfg file, easily manipulated? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Nope As i understand it the current three men representation of squads is set in the code, thus cannot be 'scaled' by settings. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> In the release version of CM, can I order my tanks to fire through a building, punching a hole in it which can later be fired through at enemy forces? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Nope The whole building is a single entity blocking your LOS. No 'through holes' shooting is handled as it would quite possibly be a small nightmare to code. Grtz S Bakker PS: Damn, beaten to it by Hunt ! When is the new AAR going to start??!?!?
Bakker@home replied to Lanzfeld's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
A week, the ol' steamboat postline ? But seriously, maybe you can shed some light on the AAR battle ? I bet you guys have something in mind .... with being so close to the 'last weeks' it'll bet it will be a good showcase scenario ....... How about the 2nd SS's attack in Bocage country ? Plenty enough burning tanks for everybody ! Grtz S Bakker -
Quote Madmatt on CMHQ: "Check out the Panther, oh and don't forget the Marder III". Hmm ..... yes i guess it's a MarderIII to . Not so good a choice of an AFV to send into street fighting though, resembles a mobile handgrenade-basket. . Grtz S bakker. PS: Did i just quote a whole line from Madmatt without a SINGLE exclamation mark ? Geez ....... [This message has been edited by Bakker@home (edited 04-04-2000).]
