  1. Steve he is wright about the holes. In Overloon we have a museum that owns a sherman hit by several PF's. At the left side it had 3 little holes of roughly that size. On the other side were much more holes. According to the guide that have been pieces of shrapnell and metal from the tank who made these holes
  2. thanks for reminding me of the fact my dad died of that 6 weeks ago. Be happy to have the game and be carefull with choosing words to express your happyness thanks:c
  3. for anyone interested , soldiers of destruction is written by Charles W. Sydnor.and published by Princeton University Press,New Yersey for the US and Oxford for the UK
  4. Steve this shooting occured at Le Paradis The commander of this group was Fritz Knochlein. His company was shelled for an hour before he met the British. The British troops killed several of his men and agreed with surrendering when they ran out of ammo. When they walked towards the Germans they were shot down. The wounded were killed with bajonets. Two soldiers survived the massacre they were the key witnesses in the trial. Knochlein was captured after the war and received the deathpenalty. I have Soldiers of Destruction and have read it thoroughly. My opinion is that the SSTotenkopf was in the beginning a group of criminals and other lowlives that used to guard concentrationcamps. Especially in Poland they commited hugh crimes against humanity. The army commander in Poland tried to stop this(Blaskowitz) but was ignored. Finally the Wehrmacht stopped protesting. Troughout the years that followed the division received better training, men and equipment. Most of the Nco's received specialist traing from the regular army. in 1941 it was one of the best divisions in the SS together wit Leibstandarte and Das Reich. Most armycommanders at that time were glad if they had one of these divisions in reserve as they were mostly used as shockdivisions or to fill up holes in the German defence(the latter occurred freqently after 1943) There were some smaller units formed by volunteers from The Netherlands and Belgium many of these volunteers were professional soldiers recruted in these countries. I don't agree with the statement that most officers were bad or even worse compared to regular army standards One thing that you can find in this book is that many of the commanders from SStv raised to Regimental and even divisioncommanders I think an officer don't becomes awarded with such high posts if he is not good enough. Another problem regards to officers was the high loss rate the officers were not allowed to wear helmets only the standard officercap. So snipers could take them out very easy.I do agree with the earlier statement about discipline In Totenkopf soldiers were practically brainwashed with the idea of an enemy being a sort of lowlive(Untermensch)jewish/communist(A danger to the Third Reich) that by all means had to be eliminated. Like I mentioned before the 3rd SS held out for 6 months during the russian offensive in 1942.The only unit that formed a big sallient in the russian frontline. The division was almost destroyed only 3000 men survived sick hungry but determined to hold out and kill as many russians as they can. When a relieve operation was started they managed to break out of encirclement on their own The survivers became the new core of officers and nco's of the newly formed Totenkopf. As someone stated earlier about the 12 div.Veterans combined with new recruits(like the others totally brainwashed) and equipment and the time to build up a new division. After 6 months of training you can say in 1943 they were the best division in the german army.In Kursk together with the 1st and second division they were the only units able to penetrate the russian lines. At that moment they were at the highest peak of their power and not a reminder of the units from the start of the war.
  5. Steve you are right,I carried a MAG. I found it a little strange though but a mg42 with tripod and spareparts was carried by three soldiers and they sure could run(that was regarded as a heavy mg ,Or am I wrong?) The mg 42 weighs almost the same as the Belgium MAG and standard ammo issue wasn't 4000 rounds.I saw pictures of German soldiers one had the tripod on his back ,one carried the mg and a third carried most of the ammo boxxes while the gunner had a box on his back correct me if I am wrong
  6. Although it has nothing to do with films I want to say this to Allan, You say you could distinquis real things from science fiction. Please explain to me why many people in the US tought they were attacked by Mars after hearing war of the worlds on the radio. Many people actually believed it and fled their houses.
  7. What will happen to partisans after fighting? And with that I mean CM can let soldier surrender to the troops who attack them. I cannot imagine that SS soldiers would take partisans as prisoners. the SS had a standard policy regarding partisans and political officers. They just kill them all.Looks nice in the game after retreating all the prisoners you have taken hanging in trees.Or am I going to far now.
  8. I have been machinegunner in the army. All equipment we had including spareparts and barrels and ammo was carried by the whole squad. My cogunner carried the spare barrels and tools I carried the gun and one box of ammo(most cases the belts around my neck) The rest of the ammo was carried by the group. When we had to run we carried the gun together. No problems whatsoever. Stoffel
  9. he soldaat ,welk onderdeel? Meld je aan bij cyberfox daar zijn meer nederlanders. Als ik wat meer heb geoefend met cm meld ik mij daar ook. Pbemmmen met alleen nederlanders communiceert wat makkelijker. btw ken je Tacops ook? Sorry for the rest of the people I did not translated this message.
  10. A simple solution is : Don't take prisoners! Just kill em all!
  11. yes it is New Amsterdam in fact the Dutch bought it from the indians for some juwelry and other things worth nothing. The guy you mentioned was called Stuyvesant(like the sigarettes) Nassau is the name of our Royal family and was Willems last name too. There are more names in New York a famous one is Harlem(one of the larger cities in Holland)
  13. great LT, I see you around someday here in Holland I guess? Well anyway you can always visit me. You have my number. Stoffel stoffers@casema.net
  14. We have some interesting museums here in Holland. The warmuseum in Overloon,The Stoottroepen museum(my former unit)A museum in Den Haag and so on. If you visit Holland I will gladly help you. Just call 035-6022675. The place to be in Europe is the tankmuseum at Bovington ,England. Lots of tanks and other vehicles. If you want to see a real kingtiger visit the Kampftruppeschule from the German Army in Munster
  15. Much better than Dragon are the figures of Francois Verlinden. A large series of military figures up in size to 200mm. You only have to assemble and paint them.
  16. I have the game and played it for some months. The idea behind the game was good. It only has some disadvantages. A very bad graphics. Tanks and vehicles look good but seem to ride in a strange way. Rivers are hard to cross. Mortars cannot give indirect fire to, fire on something they actually have to see it. Infantryunits are shown in little groups and look like the miniature soldiers from a toystore.Static figures. aaa crews only fire on a aircraft when they spot one (it has to fly rigth over it you cannot give orders to shoot at an aircraft yourself) German vehicles are superior to us,skilled commanders can takeout a panzer but not in 1944.For instance one platoon of kingtigers can kill 2 companys of shermans without getting hurt. And most important the game give s a lot of errors when you play in Windows. Still I like to play it sometimes. the maps were displayed very small you needed a binocular to see what is going on. One advantage was no turn system you can give orders to every unit at every time.
  17. The germans used special amtitank teams ,one man was used as a decoy than the other climbed on a tank and placed a mine under the turret or throwed granates in the turrethatch. You can knock out halftracks with handgranates if you can get in throwing distance since they don't had a roof. That is all I can think off. Anyone with other ideas?
  18. I don't think it matters if a shell explodes in the air at say 40 or 50 meters away from the target. Fragments can fall in any direction, and still hit their targets(unprotected infantry)if you have ever thrown handgranates you know that you had to take cover after throwing it.Because some fragments would hit the bunker in which you stand. Just imagine what a 150 mm shell will do...

Move around as much as you can,try to fire your missiles from as far away as possible (they have a long range)If it is possible only engage tanks or high priority targets as aaa-guns.Try to kill these aaa's first.Armoured cars can often be killed with cannonfire or mg fire. Remember the enemy sam gunners know where you are and can fire at you from their vehicles if you keep your helos at one place. Another thing make use of the terrain,in many cases you can hide behind trees or hills popp up and kill than move away to another location.
  20. that is just what I meant. The Us has 33% more firepower for 20% more points. I think that is a difference of 13% Or I must be very mistaken. By the way have you already thought about the radar problem of the 2S6 aaa for engaging helicopters? Stoffel
  21. Major, I set up a new pbem game we choose a customscenario. I saw that a BMP regiment has almost the same value as a Us cavalryregiment. But the us reg. has twice as many tanks and only 20 armored vehicles less. the M-1 is a far more better tank than the T-80. why isn't it turned around? more T-80's than M-1"s for the same amount of points?
  22. Major I am playing a pbem and have my thermals at 2000 meters. The 2s6 uses a radar to fire it's sa-19 missiles. Why is this system also limited to 2000 meters? Is the radar function not implied in the game? ------------------ h.s.
  23. My vote goes out to Teodor Eicke leader of the 3 SSdivision also known as the Totenkopfdivision. Under his command the 3rd booked great successes in Russia. Baum and later Meyer,Beck and Simon Becker emerged out of the original officercorps of the 3rd in fact most of the highranking officers off the Armed SS came from the 3rd. For the French I must say that De Gaulle was one of the officers that understood the principals of combined warfare. And therefore was ahead of his fellow officers. For the British army I have to admit that all the generals named were highly qualified leaders.
  24. I'm not a brown shirt and I don't want to be called one. Take care in expressing yourself you migth hurt people with such empty remarks. Oh and by the way if you know things so well than you must be a millionaire by now?????

I asked this because there have been reports about Dutch commandoforces and marines who were equiped with such devices. These reports say they were operational in small teams during the campaign in the Former Yougoslavia to light up targets for aircraft(mainly to save ammunitions and collateral damage or as testcase?) I also know that some units in the Dutch airmobile brigade uses target laser designaters in combination with artillery and there were plans to experiment with helo's. These plans were formed some years ago. And finally Iread an article about blinding lasers. The MT mentioned a system called Dazer intended to blind or damage the eyes of a soldier or simply for illuminating targets for havier AT forces. That is all I know therefore I had this question. ------------------ h.s.
