killmore replied to killmore's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Really? I can't move at all? Too bad. I thought I would be able to back out my tank... -
In the final version before you start the game can you "prepare" positions for your StuG so the are hull down wathing over selected area?

Touch me, I've seen the beta demo
killmore replied to G Ned Anderson's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
San Diego? I can do that. Anyone has beta in San diego? Maybe we should start organizing CM parties. I got 2 PII-400 networked. I play CC form time to time... -
Things that seem to be wrong with Sudden Strike

That why I only play RTSes that you can slow down almost to zero! Then you can think and decide what to do. Try Total Annihilation! -

Close combat is not real RTS because the definition of RTS seems to include producing the units. Basically in RTS you can build units while you play. You also have a choice what to produce/research. In Close Combat you might be able to buy units between missions. The choice is not totally yours. So people don't call it a real RTS... -

Not trying to be that funny... But if it has US side then it must have some kind of sherman... Otherwise I just gave up trying to figure out what tanks might be in it. -

By CC I meant Close Combat. RTS with all of the rules of Close combat might be cool. Not accurate like CM, but still fun with some WWII like strategies... -
Chance Encounter, what were the odds?
killmore replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I had a sherman that missed my StuG at 28 meters. By the end of the game the StuG killed 5 shermans, 3 mortars and 13 infantry... Got picture to prove it. Game started really bad for me! My first StuG had its gun damaged in turn 2. I moved it back to support infantry with its MG. My second stug was killed on turn 4 by sherman even if it was hull down. It also missed two shots at that sherman. Sherman then tried to get my damaged sherman by running over the hill between the left most flag and the church. While firing at my damaged stug it moved into range of my last undamaged Stug. First kill. No idea why mortar team showed up at the edge of the forest - stuG killed it quickly. At that point of time another Sherman jumped over the hill trying to kill my disabled stug. It killed it and then fired the shot at my hero stug while it was rotating. MISSED at 28 meters. Stug killed it. Two shermans showed up in the sparse trees near the flag. Supported by lots of infantry. I called artilery strike at them. I bet that strike damaged both shermans ! Lots of my infantry engaged the Amis (from the left). I moved my hero stug up the hill toward the flag. Amis infantry was busy trying to survive my infantrys attack. Sherman in the sparse tries was "Unidentified vehicle". No matter I killed it on the second shot. It never fired at me. At that point the second sherman just took off toward the edge of the map where amis started the game. WHY? I dont know. Mean while StuG killed mortar team right beside the flag. German infantry cleared up the rest of the area. Flag was mine. Infantry also noticed the Sherman at the edge of the map (Sparse trees in the US deployment area). I moved my stug slowly forward into something close to hull down position and it killed sherman on the first shot. Sherman never fired at me. Now there were very few US forces left. I rushed my StuG toward the edge of the map where Sherman that paniced was. I was just standing the with its back to me and its turret facing forward. It had to see StuG approaching and it did NOTHING. StuG killed it with first shot. Now there were just couple of US teams left in the middle of the map in sparse tries. StuG killed the with no problems (mortar included). Amis surrendered. Only 9 amer soldiers survived! About 150 German soldiers survived. I would be quite happy if the game turned out to be CC RTS. But it is not even close. CC had it moments. (like waiting for the tank to show its rear before firing that bazooka) Instead it is more like starcraft. -
Graphics were cool. I loved the ability to take over abandoned 85mm and shoot down the recon plane. I recognized all vehicles including the SturmTiger and T-34. Tanks get immobilized. One tank got his gun damaged probably because it was only firing MG. Infantry was not able to kill/damage tiger with their MG fire. Maybe with granades. But here is a list of things that feel wrong with this game: 1) I saw no difference between panter and tiger and IV in performance. Or the action was too fast to notice difference. 2) All units seem to have the same ROF. Tiger seems to heve same range as Sniper and MP40 infantry and sturmtiger. 3) I don't think armor thickes (front, sides, rear) is simulated. 4) Recon unit does not seem to have larger line of sight then Armor. It feels like a game where the only way to win is to send mass of units into the slaughter. It does not matter what units and the ranges are the same. Why have different units at all.

Don't get discouraged. I for example don't play over internet.

If you don't like Uk so much please tell me why so many countries started by UK have such high standard of living? No country started by spain/portugal can compare to them. (US, Canada, Australia, NZ)

Historical Question -- Polish troops
killmore replied to Major LardLad's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Thanks for the numbers Major TOM!!! Well recently Canada started to count personel of Merchant vessels as veterans. So thats why I wonder about their accuracy. While India had 2.4 million how many of them were engaged in active fighting? So while it was a large army only small part was engaged in the war. I was interested only in fighting part of the army. I do know that while Poland had larger fighting army the infrastructure was provided by other countries. Thats why I was asking for numbers without infrastructure/support. -
What was the size of US army, Soviet army ?
killmore replied to killmore's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Gee... Lets say 1945, any month. I don't care really about Air/Marines/army I was interested mainly in total fighting personel number (all branches). (Something that would not include biurocracy) -

killmore replied to Major LardLad's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I believe Canadian army in WW2 was smaller then in WW1. Canadian losses were also proportionally smaller in WW2. Do you have any numbers of soldiers? Not "Called to arms" number. And not home guard numbers. My problem is that I don't have any current source (book) of numbers (and neither do you). And I stated from the begining that I don't know how accurate these numbers were. I still don't believe that Canada had 1 mil. soldiers in WW2. Population of Canada in 1940 was about 20 milion... More then half thats women. They were not accepted into fighting roles. That leaves 9 mil. Children and elderly thats probably at least 5 million. Leaves 4 million men. So theoretically it is possible that 1/4 of able men were soldiers. But I don't think it happened. Poland had 38 million of people in 1939. So close to double that of Canada. Asked people for some numbers... I bet that US army had to be at least 10 times larger than Canadian so if Canada had 1 million army - USA had at least 10 million. -

killmore replied to Major LardLad's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Canada did not had 1,000,000 fighting men - soldiers during the war. (I am Canadian) Thats is just a propaganda number. 1,000,000 number includes people engaged in production of anything war related. All farmers are probably included into this number. This is not a number of soldiers (fighting men). I doubt that the Brit army number included Canadians since 200,000 Polish west army was a part of British army. Canada was suposedly second largest arm producer. (I heard this number in Canada war propaganda program). I doubt this number too. Somehow I think Soviet Union and US were producing more arms. -

Kinda common problem. Why do my stuGs hull down always miss but not hull down sherman always gets them on first shot? I has been annoying me for long time -
Historical Question -- Polish troops
killmore replied to Major LardLad's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Yes Polish pilots had their own squadrons in France 1940 and during battle of Britain. In fact Polish squadron (304?) had the most kills during the Battle of britain. There was also Polish units in 1940 in Norway at Narwick. Poland had the 4th largest army on allied side in WWII. (After 1:USRR, 2:USA, 3:Britain, 4:Poland) Please tell me how much off I am since I never read any official numbers but I believe they had 200,000 in the west and 200,000 in the east fronts). Some of the troops escaped indirectly to France in 1939 throught Romania. Some were formed in USRR in 1941 (General Anders army) and then ended up in Iran where they become part of british forces. They don't teach most of that in Polish schools so some of my facts can be wrong. But there were polish squadrons in France 1940 as well as infatry units. And there were troops in Norway, Narwick. King Tigers vs. Shermans {long post]

And they say only Soviet Union was wasting equipment in that way. I guess Shermans were wasted the same way as t-34... -
I wonder how CM is going to run on 1Gigahertz systems
killmore replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Almost fast enough to make it real time. Ok. Time for disclaimer before I get flamed: I do not expect or want CM 1 to include real time play option.
