  1. The atrocities committed on the Eastern Front were due entirely to German ideology—primarily Hitler's, but nobody saw fit to argue with it. Stalin and his henchmen were not exactly nice guys either. In short, it really isn't necessary to drag drugs into the discussion in order to explain the degree of brutality seen in that war.

    Michael

If anything, the drugs would only dull the senses of those committing the atrocities, but they would have been committed anyway.

so yeah, drugs or no drugs, the atrocities would still have happened.

  2. What about the opposite effect - weren't paratroopers on D-Day given airsickness pills that knocked them out or made them sleepy? Certain cold medications will absolutely floor me and make me useless for half a day - its unimaginable to be living through that while jumping out of a plane into occupied France.

Yeah, I've always wondered if there might have been the ulterior motive for that, as in to calm them down in the face of that tremendously horrifying jump.

  3. Is there some way to turn off the background artillery and MG fire?

Or, is there a mod that changes these background sounds to only bird and wind sounds?

    Thanks.

Yes. Find an empty soundfile (or one with bird chirps or whatever)* and rename it background day combat.wav and background night combat.wav and put it in the Z folder in your Data folder (in the main game folder).

If you dont have a Z folder, you should make one.

*If you copy Normandy v100A.brz from your /Data folder and put it in ModTools/RezExplode/imput and then run RezExplode.exe you can look in the "exploded" folder to find the non battle background sounds in /sounds/background.

Just copy the one you like and rename it like i said above and place it in your Z folder.

  4. How you play can defenitley reduce casualties. For instance some players play ,slow, and methodical, using smoke and area fire effectively.Using move and quick when you should be using hunt will surely make your casualties rise. Also no matter where your men are always have them hiding and end their turn in hide.Of course there are exceptions. That being said casualties in the game are still higher than reality due to I believe 2 factors.Self preservation AI could be adjusted, maybe it could be an option to select for ultra realism?Secondly players simply just do things in the game that they would never do on a real life battlefield because their life is not at stake.

I rarely use Hide since it is so much more debilitating in CMx2 than it was in CMx1. If your troops are hiding they will hardly ever spot anything unless its right on top of them, and even if enemy troops start firing on them they will keep hiding.

I feel that troops are hidden enough naturally without using the hide command

  5. Did you try the multiplayer already? CM is at it's best when played against human opponents! :)

I recommend you join "The Few Good Men" Wargaming Club community and enjoy many good battles against (more or less) intelligent opponents!

I play H2H with a friend of mine pretty regularly.

I've had too many bad experiences with people dropping out halfway through a battle without a word in the old CMx1 days so i don't play unless its H2H on the same computer.

Not to mention that i tend to forget what my plan is if i play PBEM (but i guess TCP/IP would work, but i'll keep to local matches with my buddy)

  6. You do know that you can set the hot keys from within the game now, don't you? It's on the Options page.

    Michael

Yes, but i forgot what the default ones were :D (also, it doesnt work if you just delete the hotkeys file. No new one will be created. I had to use one of the alternative ones and edit what i remembered)

  7. Anybody got the default hotkeys file and feel like either uploading it here or just posting the contents here?

I messed up my hotkeys file by fiddling around too much and naively i thought it would be replaced if i just deleted it and started the game...

So... could someone post it here please? (i cant reinstall the game, im at work. 10 hour workday at a place that gets 2 customers a day on average... need to fill the time somehow)

  8. I have actually never had problems with setting up huge battles, but what i DO have problems with is the execution of the battleplan.

There are always so many troops that i inevitably forget some parts of my force for a few turns now and then.

That really puts a strain on the entire battle usually.

Not to mention that i have to re-watch the action sequence a couple of times for each turn meaning it takes almost 10 minutes to do a 1 minute turn.

This makes the battle drag out forever.

This is why i prefer smaller battles. Or larger tank-heavy battles (since they are easier to handle)

  9. I never tested calibers below 50mm... might be that they go right through too...

Its an easy test to set up in the editor.

Just plonk a couple of cannons/vehicles down and plonk an 8 story modular building behind an individual church (small one) and stat firing at the church... see which shells go throug (spend your HE chells on the ground tho, so you dont weaken the buildings)
