1. You just had to remind us, didn't you Fionn! Now please excuse me while I go and bang my head in the wall, repeatedly! Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die!
 2. Hey CoolColJ! I think I might be able to help you get a well paid job. The requrements are that you must be good in COBOL programming, have a fairly good understanding of telecom local-loop systems and be willing to move to northern Norway. Keep up the good work! Hawk Ps. Since you're the Sound Wizard here; is it possible to add a soundtrack to an AVI file? ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die! 3. While I am slowly going (more) insane from waiting, I do believe that best possible graphics is better than releasing now (as if our demands for a release now means anything to BTS :cool . The reason for this is that this game is probably (hopefully?) going to set new standards in tactical wargames, and really goodlooking graphics is going to help promote it to those players who put graphics above (or at least as important as) gameplay. \\\//// (@ @) --(_)-- Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die! 5. I have a friend who served with the Norwegain UN contingent in Bosnia, and he said that one of the sides (Serbia IIRC) was quite into using tanks as indirect artillery. They even had charts and tables for manually elevating the barrel. Of course, this is way beyond the scale of CM (as has been previously stated). 6. To be honest I haven't bothered keeping track of the vehicles that are going to be included in CM (Hawk is now hurriedly putting on his flame proof flak-west and helmet), but I sugest you search the board and read Fionn's excellent review at MadMatt's CMHQ on TGN. That will show you all the german vehicles at least. If the above in any way insulted you, you have my heartfelt apologies, and sympathy! 7.
quote:
Originally posted by Fionn: Yes many beta testers have sacrificed many hours to extensively test many scenarios via PBEM. Our hearts bleed for you! Keep up the good work! Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die!
 8. If we come down like a pack of wolfs on every newbee who asks that question, we are going to scare away all but the most courages one. Some of those would probably have bought the game, thus we scare away BTS's customers, and we all know what Steve will say about that now, don't we? The simple fact that they asks this question shows that they haven't searched the posts, and thus are very inexperienced (or utterly lazy), so if we start howling for blood, they'll simply leave and won't learn a thing. I suggest that the next time we get a Q like that, the first one to read it simply states the known facts and politely suggeste searching the old postings. 9. What!? You haven't heard about the "charge of the light brigade"? I am utterly shocked! Well ok, not really. "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Lord Tennyson. HALF a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 'Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!' he said: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 'Forward, the Light Brigade!' Was there a man dismay'd ? Not tho' the soldier knew Some one had blunder'd: Their's not to make reply, Their's not to reason why, Their's but to do and die: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred. Flash'd all their sabres bare, Flash'd as they turn'd in air Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army, while All the world wonder'd: Plunged in the battery-smoke Right thro' the line they broke; Cossack and Russian Reel'd from the sabre-stroke Shatter'd and sunder'd. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred. Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, While horse and hero fell, They that had fought so well Came thro' the jaws of Death, Back from the mouth of Hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred. When can their glory fade ? O the wild charge they made! All the world wonder'd. Honour the charge they made! Honour the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred! (Quote) Tennyson based this famous poem on the Battle of Balaklava, fought on October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War, in which a small force of British cavalry made a daring but dangerous assault against a Russian artillery line. After the attack, only 195 of the 673 men in the Light Brigade answered muster call. Some find it fashionable to ridicule this poem as a glorification of war and paean to those who blindly, and stupidly, follow orders. But the fact is that there are times when obedient acts of self-sacrifice and courage merit both admiration and profound gratitude. (end-quote) Thus... ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die! [This message has been edited by Hawk (edited 02-08-2000).]
 10. If this has been discussed before, I guess I'll be shot at first daylight, but since the search didn't reveal anything, I'm willing to take my chances! Are there railroad tracks in CM? If so, is it possible to drive wheeled and/or tracked vehicles along it? Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die!
 11. Ok, to sum up: we've covered beers, bikers, timezones, a strange phenomena called Cricket (if I am not mistaken) and the weather. Anyone spotted any info on the Bocage thingy? No? Sorry, just kidding! Good qestions Lt Bull. I hope they do get answered! Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die!
 12. I suddenly started thinking about this when I drow to work this morning. How is firepower for the various weapons in the game calculated? Do you f.ex. just decide that a Mauser rifle has a value of 1 and then work from there? A search didn't reveal any previous discussions about this. 13. "One for the money, two for the show ...." Still here? Hawk Ah yes, looking good! (I mean my membership status looks good. Well, not that I don't myself ....er.... 15. Ah, if there where only female leaders, the wars would be fought in a more infamous and sneaky way. For example, say you had five neighbouring countries. As long as all where "present" and together, there would be peace, but if one country started focusing on something outside the "gang", the other four would start bickering and finaly jump on it. Of course the one attacked would then use a bit of divide-and-conquer to set the other four up against each other. In the end, there would be a short and vicious all out attack followed by a peace so teardripping and sweet that it would be downright nauseating! Until on of the countries started looking another way again, which would start it all over again. Believe me folks, I worked 6 months in a kindergarden as the only male adult when I was 18 years old. There might be fewer brawls and fistfights among women, but their inventiveness when it comes to finding new ways of hurting each other psychologicaly still surprises me! This does of course not include all female humans out there! Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die! 16. To qoute my homepage: "War has for some reason always fascinated me, and since killing and maiming people, vaporizing real estate and looting private property is generally frowned upon by most communities, I quickly got into wargaming. These days I satisfy my ambitions as warmonger on computer games and table top games." And of course, it's much more comfy to be able to this in your own living room. That way, the risk of getting killed or injured is next to nothing! My best guess on reason for this facination is the built-in-the-genes theory. It all started when I as 9 year old managed to persuad my folks that I should be allowed to watch "The Great War" on tv (from BBC). After that I had huge wars using Lego and later plastic soldiers. Imagine my joy when I discovered that there actually was wargames (my desire to learn english soared at that point) As to real life, I honestly don't know. I do have quite a temper though, so I can imagine circumstances where the "beast within" would take control and wage war on my enemies. So I now play these games, enjoying the experience and trying hard to ignore the moral qualms the pops up from time to time. 17.
quote:
Originally posted by Bullethead: Thus, breaching minefields isn't arty SOP today and I doubt it was in WW2

While we're at it: is it correct that the US HQ in Desert Storm decided to use carpet bombing by B52s in an attemt to breach an Iraki minefield? The end result was (AFAIK) that the ground was so churned and cratered that no known vehicle could traverse it after the attack. 18. I first read about "Beyond Squadleader" (?) in PC Review magazine a few years ago (IIRC) and then saw a notice about CM on Computer Games Online in November-99 (ok, so I'm a newbie, sue me! ) I have of course been hooked (gutted, cleaned and sold) since! Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die!
 19. ... and to sum up, Steve (at BTS) said that they won't make any more scenarioes for the beta demo since that takes too much resources away from finishing the final version (and we don't want that, now do we? ) Hawk (dang, beaten by a minute ) ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die! 20. I see, Doug. So there is an article in the Geneva Convention on you as well? Hawk ------------------ Our's is not to reason "why", our's is but to do and die!
 21. Now if you don't start behaving, all of you, I am going to open all these old tin cans I have marked "Caution - Mustard!". I have no idea why those who fought in WWI wanted all that mustard (did they eat a lot of pork?) and why they where afraid of the tin cans they kept it in, but I bet it'll sting if I start throwing mustard at you, so be nice! 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Fionn: The bombing of Bodo was a STRATEGIC action and not tactical.

Oh yes of course, but I can't for my dear life understand what strategic value was gained from it. But then, that would probably be the case for many of those kind of actions! Thanks for your answer, Fionn! Hawk
 23. In a post from Mars last year, BTS state that there will be no listing of civilian casulties. While I agree that a tactical game like CM shouldn't put much weight in that area, it would have been sobering to get the following message in the debriefing screen: "Civilian casulties: 523. The <enemy> High Command has named you a war criminal and your superior officer wants a detailed report about why you felt it neccessary to accept a high rate of civilian casulties!" But I am digressing. I have a question to all you historians out there. Is there any evidence that some forces participating in WWII cared less about civilian casulties than other? For example, I live in a small town called Bodo in norther Norway (Power's U2 flight, anyone? ). For some reason the German High Command thought it neccessary to level the town during the invasion in April 1940, using carpet bombing with incendiary bombs. 97% of the buildings where lost. The local brewery was spared (marked on the target maps as a no-go area), the hospital was not (even tough it was clearly marked with a big red cross painted on the roof). I guess we all know of some incidents where civilian casulties where disregarded (and even encuraged, V2 missiles etc), but what was the SOPs (if any) regarding civilians on a tactical scale?
