"The new improved Tactical AI"

Recommended Posts

First up just to say things look terrific, with some great new features, I can't wait to start playing in the editor.

"The new improved Tactical AI" - caught my eye.

Does this mean tactical AI has been improved from CMSF - I really hope so as the combination of AI plans and a better tac AI would be something else. (Add triggers and things would be near perfect).

Steve - care to comment ?

thanks

Forget the AI ;)

You want tactics and cunning opponent play a Human! Once you get a taste you will never go back. AI's IMHO are only good for basic tutorials. Been computer wargaming since 1982 and have never seen an AI capable of beating even an intermediate player with any regularity. ;P

True, human-versus-human will always be best in terms of tactical complexity and nerve-racking battles and prime satisfaction in victory.

However (as good ol' Paper Tiger would no doubt point out), there are not a few CM players for whom HvH is either impractical or even impossible for various valid reasons.

The TacAI is very different than the AI Scripts setup in the Editor. TacAI is used by all units on both sides all the time regardless of if there is a Human player or not. The AI Scripts are used only when a side has no Human player.

There have been many significant changes to the TacAI to take into consideration the differences between desert and temperate terrain, modern and WW2 weapons, crewing things like mortars and ATGs, etc. These behaviors, like most TacAI behaviors, are generally taken for granted until someone notices a behavior that isn't optimal. So we like to remind people that we've put in a significant amount of time into this because it's so easily forgotten.

AI Scripts, on the other hand, have seen very little change since the latest version of CM:SF. We have a major overhaul of the scripts planned, but we had way too much on our plates to get sucked into that big of a project. Ideally we would like to see at least a solid month of programming put into it and probably 4 months of elapsed tweaking time. CM:BN has way too many big things that need testing so not only is the programming an issue this time around, but so is testing. There's only so much we can bite off at one time and still chew :)
