MeatEtr
Larry Walters took flight on July 2, 1982 in a homemade aircraft which consisted of an ordinary patio chair with 45 helium-filled weather balloons attached to it. This one struck me funny, especially with the radio chatter about his glasses. It was new to me considering I was only 6 yrs old when this happen. Video here: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ce9_1256169578 Full story here: http://www.darwinawards.com/stupid/stupid1998-11.html Ouch, he gotta $1,500 fine from the FAA. I imagine nowadays he would of got a much bigger fine.
John Kettler
MeatEtr, Here's the musical based on Lawn Chair Larry's story. My friend, Kevin McCormack, appeared in this production as Leonardo da Vinci. The people who wrote the show flew in specially for the opening. The Amelia Earhart sequence was simply astounding and how splendidly appropriate it is now given the new Hilary Swank and Richard Gere movie! Regards, John Kettler
costard
He had to pluck up the courage to shoot some balloons to lose altitude. I can well imagine....
Thomm
There was also this priest in South America that tried the same stunt (with simple balloons, IIRC), but got lost and died in the end. Best regards, Thomm

I think 'ascended' is a better term.
