New Syrian TO&E thread

You've been bamboozeled by the inherent problems with talking about the strategic nature of the matchup vs. the tactical one. It's like the Eastern Front after 1943 (or earlier, one could argue very easily). The Germans were done strategically, it just hadn't been acheived yet. There isn't any way that the Germans could have done much more than pull off a stalemate after a strategic withdrawal. Yet the tactical battles... very interesting! Not always, however.

Putting a bunch of T-34 1943 model tanks on a flat map up against a dug in German combined arms force supported by Tigers isn't much fun for the Soviets. Having a lone company of German infantry being attacked by 2000 rounds of heavy artillery and then attacked by a battalion of infantry with tank support isn't that much fun for the Germans either. In CM:SF there are tactical matchups that aren't much fun for one side or the other side as well. Since we know this, and we're good game developers, we're making sure the baby stays in the bathwater :D

I came across an article that Syria is rearming with funding from Iran, but the article does not give details on what new toys they are getting:

"The Syrian armed forces are being strengthened in an unprecedented way in recent memory with the help of generous funding from Iran. The Syrians are bolstering their forces in all areas except the air force, which has been believed to be weak for some time. The main emphasis of the efforts has been missiles and long-range rockets to compensate for the weak air force."

Syria rearms

Was this caused by the CMSF website going live? :D

I have written before on the emerging counter U.S. alliance, but this really rattled my cage. Not only does Russia have so much money that it's resumed Cold War style strategic/theater bomber probes (via BEAR, BLACKJACK, BACKFIRE), but just finished combined arms MOUT exercises with the Chinese in Chelyabinsk, Russia. The same Chinese with whom a vicious border clash was fought (in 1969) along the Amur River! This recaps the clash, highlights what's happened since, and points out the possibilities of things coming unstuck over water shortages.

While boding ill in terms of heightened international tensions, it would appear that the emerging alliance and attendant muscle flexing reinforce the arguments I made earlier about Moscow's willingness to take strong steps in support of a key regional ally, except this Moscow now has a pocketful of money!

Edit

Just found this. Syria's getting the modern Pantsyr S1E air defense system.

System looks like this.

SA-19 missile data.

SA-22 system (improved SA-19)

Abbreviated and impressive Russian tactical-technical discussion of Pantsyr. Looks like the thing will eat, not just helicopters and A-10s, but even tactical missiles and can preemptively engage many platforms.

This suggests that Syria's border with Israel may get very exciting and soon. Covert artillery movement at night!

Worse, both Israel and Syria are talking about war as a serious possibility. Article's from August 14th!
