Reason to start lobbying again for M1117 inclusion

Recommended Posts

Good news on the big wheel AC front. The New Orleans based company Textron Marine & Land just put out a press release saying production of the M1117 'Guardian' ASV has been fully restored. By August it should be delivering 48 M1117s per month off the assembly line. Woo Hoo!

I've been lobbying for inclusion of the M117. I've got a soft spot for big-wheel ACs (M1117 and Staghound have the same diameter wheels). And I think this is the only vehicle in the (Army) inventory that has both .50 cal and 40mm grenade launcher under armor in a turret. They can't complain they don't have suitable scale plans for the thing - I even emailed them my own 5-view plans based on the manufacturer's drawings! :D

Kinda makes you wonder, who is "Duffy"?

Ooops!

Yeah... very similar in profile. I expect even more so at night using thermal imaging (which, IIRC, is when most of the friendly fire incidents have happened in the past conflicts).

The thing is BIG! Notice the step-thru side door. Its actually got the same armor protection as Stryker - Russian hvy mg (14.5mm?) round at point blank range. Also has the same 40 ft. turn radius as Stryker. About the same layout as the old Vietnam era Commando AC (built in the old Commando AC factory). I can't recall how many soldiers it can carry.

Yeh, I was just being funny. Being amphibious, it was named after the actor who played the captain on the Love Boat, I guess ;)

The point of the exercise was tto show how big the M1117 was compared to the humvee and how MONSTEROUS the Stryker is!

I saw some M1117s down at Al Asad a few months ago, so theres no question they are used around here. The Strykers I've seen stop through Haditha dam look the size of a house with their add on armor. The 1117 on paper should be a great convoy escort vehicle, but I have no experience with them to comment on.

MikeyD,

I thought I was hallucinating at first, being used to the much smaller V-150 Commando. Had never seen the, er, big brother before. Would love to see it in the game. The size comparison chart's useful and amusing.

flamingknives,

How does anyone confuse an MTLB with a Challenger 2? They don't look remotely similar, they're definitely not the same size, and the MBT has a great honking turret.

Regards,

John Kettler

I've no idea, but according to the board of inquiry on the incident, that's what happened. The distance is classified, as it has a bearing on equipment capabilities, but the mis-ID'd Challenger was engaged with two HESH rounds, one of which hit the open commnders hatch. Result: one written-off Challenger, two dead, two injured.
