Tobruk wargame anyone?

The new Tobruk is a game system that takes the original and improves it. It is, IMO, an attempt (and a good one) to give ASL a run for thier money. I have tried it out and yes, it is an improvement to the old Tobruk, ESPECIALLY in regards to the movement factors, they have ramped up the factors to more reasonable numbers. I took a squad of Stuarts out for a run and I was just givin' her. They now feel like greyhounds.

The Game is well worth a look. Though, if you already play ASL, you are getting the same thing ,only more refined.

BTW, greetings to Mr Dunnigan, I am pleasantly suprised to see you here. It's a bit like having the Stones play your private BBQ :D

That's the same Jim (James) Dunnigan alright.

He was nice enough to come here and comment on an issue that used to be a salient one in wargaming.

His main public presence these days is in punditry as a noted specialist in OOB and military affairs.

The last time that I saw him was on television during the height of the Iraq fighting.

Anyway, thanks again, Jim!

A hex was12km? with a forwards and rear deployment system. counters usually represented Bns, each strenght point of Inf equalled 100men, one plt of armour or one bty guns, every weapon had its own combat values/morale etc and was played over 5 3ftx4ft? maps. The game covered *everything* and was a logistical nightmare...the OB was bloody well detailed too. :D

That sounds like it. The map was large - if it's as large as you remember it I probably just opened one section! :D

I'll have to dig it out, if only for the OOB.

What with all the questions about the 2lb, I thought I'd resurrect this thread for those unfamiliar with the boardgame Tobruk.

No one that really got to know the game will be a bit suprised with the vagaries of the weapon, its ineffectiveness agains armor and PAK alike.

There is indeed a ***NEW*** Tobruk available from www.criticalhit.com. It's a major, and very satisfactory, rework of the original.

Truth be known, though, I didn't know that it existed until I read about it here. I ordered it and I LOVE it. I haven't had that much fun with a board game in years.

So, if you are really interested in the nuts-and-bolts of tank battles in the desert, I'd heartily recommend that you take a look at the new version of Tobruk.

It'll be a real eye-opener for a lot of folks.

BTW: they fixed the "illusion of movement" problem by increasing the turn length from 30 to 90 seconds. Perfect! :D

Hey EZ, how does the new Tobruk system work for solitare play?? It looks really good. I just dug out my old copy for the scenario info.

Great to have a legend like JD grace this forum. Thanks Jim. I have over 100 wargames (mostly SPI, AH). Luftwaffe (AH) was my first wargame ever, and Fast Carriers was my first SPI game.

Solitaire play?

Well, here's another improvement over the original, that makes solo play, a LOT easier.

The die-rolling is drastically reduced (as in a square-root of the original,LOL).

Its a tanker's game, like CMAK, that does a better job of modeling armoured combat than ASL, IMO.

I picked up ATS on a whim, waiting for CMAK to come out, and solo'd it for two weeks before inviting a buddy over for H2H.

Its probably the best boardgame that I've ever played as relates to armoured combat in the desert.

Yes I to have AH TOBRUK (two as a matter of fact). Very much considering getting ATS TOBRUK.

Never know when you might have a CPU problem or a power outage. Or how about the trips to the cabin (without the laptop).

Before Steel Panthers / Steel Panthers WaW (and the computer), I used the AH TOBRUK rules for 1/76 scale model wargaming on a 9 x 5 table. Worked out great by using each hex as 1" on the wargame table. Micro scale would have been better though, but I used what I had.

While I am typing, I have recently pulled out some old Wargamer Digest magazines from 1977 - 1982. I am thinking on making some of the Battle Station problems (scenario's) for CMBB and CMAK. More on that at a latter time.
