ErikinWest
I always play as the soviets and my friend always takes uber german tanks. I can only kill them with my tank hunter teams. It seems like buying Russian tanks is just a waste of money. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Wicky
Get some uber soviet tanks or more low quality tanks than he has ammunition to destroy and make him pay for his gamey tactics Sharpshooters, soft ground, rain and well placed AT guns are another possibility but there are numerous combinations that will make his life a misery depending on the terrain.
Tigrii
Try just not getting any tanks and spending the points on infantry and arty. A King Tiger has little more firepower against infantry than a StuG and is just as vulnerable to grenades, while costing a lot more. With so much more infantry, you can work around an ubertank as long as you're not attacking across an open map or anything like that. It can be frustrating, but remember that your guys can rally and that he has a limited ammo supply.
ErikinWest
I'm finding that infantry are quite powerful the more I play with them. Except against a Sturmmosser (I know they only ever made like 50 in real life, but a 380mm gun this thing is a moving nuke!) Cheers, Erik
MPK
The 2-man tank hunter teams can be a little vulnerable; another good choice is veteran Pioneer squads. They can deal nicely with tanks once within 25m. If you have enough smoke/cover to be able to keep them alive, a few flame teams can give you a nasty ambush potential. Not just sharpshooters but ATR's are excellent for making sure tanks stay buttoned - or for blowing the commander's head off. Crews often abandon an immobile tank (even Tigers) and AA autocannon like the 37mm can produce mobility kills and gun hits. Without infantry support, even the German ubers are vulnerable; in fact often more vulnerable than old warhorses like the PzIV. Use your powerful Russian arty assets to strip the tanks of their infantry -and get a few mobility/gun kills from your 152mm's. As JasonC has pointed out, a realistic Russian purchase should involve many conscript (because they're cheap)FO's to deliver the kind of fire that might be typically available. Aircraft are nice too...
ErikinWest
Thanks for the great input MPK but I have a few questions: 1. How do you get smoke equiped people to fire smoke. 2. Who is this JasonC Cheers, Erik
MPK
"How do you get smoke equipped people to fire smoke?" 'T' is for Target, yeah? well, 'K' is for Smoke. This works for tanks, guns, and Arty observers. Vehicles with smoke dischargers pop their smoke automatically; you can't control it. "Who is this JasonC?" JasonC is someone who posts some very informative and interesting stuff on this board. Do a search for his posts, I found them very helpful, particularly "How to attack like a Russian" (it's not all vodka and yelling). In the same threads you will find posts from the other great minds of CM as well.
dieseltaylor
If you are posting Erik it helps if you give the time period you are playing in as some tactics will not be applicable. BTW generally speaking Russian tanks do not have smoke shells. But mortar spotters are cheap : ) Also the Valentine IX has the British 6lbr [57mm] which is a very good ATG compared to most Russian stuff. Oh and they are cheap to buy.
Sirocco
It's a numbers game. Overload your target with greater numbers, firing in combination from different angles.

Don't let him select the parameters (such as tabletop + late war), play early war, buy T34 and KVI, let him whine, tell him to use more realistic purchases for late war games...

Other Means
IL2's (air support) make great kitty killers. Apart from that, buy CMAK.
MikeyD
A Russian 57mm anti-tank gun will FAR outperform the more common 76.2mm gun, Put holes in Tigers no problemo... as long as you let him get close enough.
