BTS PLEASE HELP ME!!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I posted in the tech support area but I didnt get a response, I am really in need of some help plz :P

I jsut built a Tbird 900 MHZ PC with a gigabyte Ga-7ZX MB I have a tnt2 32 meg card (latest nvida drivers) I have direct x8. 128 megs of ram and a Hayes 56k modem with an updated driver. I am running win98 and ie5.0

I am finding myself unable to connect in CM. the game shows me my ip then basically freezes forcing me to hit alt-f4 to exit. At this time it seems to also kick me from the WWW but not my actual ISP. I cannot access any sites after this and must reboot the PC to reactivate my modem. I can surf fine prior to launching CM.

The Vid card, dirx 8 were both used on my other PC and worked fine with CmI was also able to use this modem on the other PC (P3 500) I have since given the other PC to my son and made changes for him. Unfortunately I can no longer play Cm .. this is the only game I play currently. Please Help me to resolve this as I'm hating taht I cant play and sufferring SERIOUS withdrawls :P

Thx Guys

BTW CM runs fine in SP mode

MATT,

Soon as I deleeted the stuff from the Networking window the system rebooted me without a prompt

Then it came up with nothing, so I attempted to reinstall as you said,but things didnt go in the order you said they should;

I ended up rebooting several times trying to get setup enuff to get back on to talk to ya

When I tired to load the client.. it gave me two default drivers.. those didnt work(didnt recognize either) I then went to the Microsoft section and chose client there but that didnt work..

I then ended up going with family logon after a few attempts at getting the other to work.. this was the only way I could get back online. when I went family it automatically loaded the rest.. (although u said i should boot after each). I dont know whats up.. Im in chat for a bit, if not I don't see ya agian I will check back here in the morning

thx

Hey Pnzer

Why are you opening a browser? When I play over the internet I connect to my ISP (this does not require your browser to open) and then open a DOS box that allows me to find out my IP address (if I am connecting to someone else) or of course the game will tell you if you are the creator. Also check to see if you have a virus scan running. Are you on a LAN? Who are you trying contact? If you reverse roles does it work?

Just questions that may be pertinent.

I hate to say this SS_PanzerLeader, but I think your major problem is DX8.0. This new DX is very buggy. Even computer experts/professionals say do NOT install DX8.0 unless you run something that requires it. Stay with DX7.0a. There are currently people working on a program to uninstall DX8.

The people on TechTV tell people to stay away from DX8 unless it is absolutely necessary. In fact, when people call up Tech-Support with problems, they ask if they have DX8 installed and then they say, "That's the problem."

The problem existed before I installed Dx8. I also had DX8 onthe last system and CM ran fine and connected fine. So I dont think its the issue here. Had CM ran on dir7 I would say you are on to something, unfortunately this isnt the case.

Thx for the suggestion tho, If ya think of any other possibilities Im all ears smile.gif

To connect to the internet you click on the icon on the desktop right?

That opens your browser but also accesses an internet account set outside the browser. If you go into my computer and click my network connections there should be a connection called MY INTERNET CONNECTION or something of that nature. Click on that and it should connect you w/o opening a browser. Should that matter, I do not know for sure (I suspect not) but at least it is a start. Also is a NIC card installed on the machine?

Do you still have access to the PC that you gave your son ? Have you tried a TCP/IP session with that machine yet (you'll probably have to convince him that it's really important that you use his computer for awhile) ?

I'm not sure what kind of errors you would get if the OpenPlay modules are in the correct spot. You may want to delete your prefs file, the CM executable and re-extract the 1.1 patch again. There should be an "OpenPlay Modules" directory in the CMBO directory with a "TCPIP.dll" file inside. However, I'd assume that you would get some other type of error before lockup if this file wasn't present or corrupted. If this directory is present you may want to delete it, run scandisk and then perform the extraction of the 1.1 patch.

Ok Arien and I have it figured out. windows was showing no conflict on a shared IRQ.. but apparently with CM and the IRQ combo = trouble.

At any rate after manipulating the IRq's in the Bios I was able to connect unfortunatly I still cant get it to maintain a solid connection. So I am going to get a new USB modem and Hope that I can manipulate the IRq's to amore favorable situation with regards to CM...

Thx for the help to those who contributed

SS_Panzerleader I have a suggestion. I had a USB modem and could'nt play IP CM because very similar things happened when I tried. Even loading up the game caused my modem to **** up. It was lit up as still connected but wouldn't respond until I reset the system. The answer is that if your modem is attached to an extension cable which your PC is also running on, the power surge caused by loading CMBO caused my modem to stop responding. I put the modem on another plug socket. Hope that helps!!

If your area supports it, I recommend going with DSL or cable modem. It's worth the price just so you dont have to worry about dialup connecting, not to mention the MAJOR increase in speed.
