12" German Soldier dolls

Recommended Posts

Just curious if anyone has seen any of these 12" dolls that are made to look like German WW2 soldiers. They have excellent detail on the weapons and clothing. They are quite impressive. I bought one which is modeled after a soldier on the Russian front in 45'. He has a panzerfaust and Kar98 rifle. He wears a Wermacht uniform with a "zeltbahn" or poncho over his uniform and an ammo belt along with ankle boots with gaiters and standard helmet too. It is quite impressive the detail with which these dolls are made. There are others, such as an mg34 machine gun team, with just two team members, though, a horseman with stug44 and accessories are sold seperately also.

From what I understand there are only very few dolls made every month and then a new set is made.

They are ACTION FIGURES!!!!! Not dolls.

Geez, at least you didn't call them Barbies.

Actually, at Toys-R-Us, they have some amazing WWII stuff. I think the company is called "Universal Soldier" or something and they make babie-scale tanks and even a PSW-251!

I just bought the Sergeant Steiner version - not exactly the way he appeared in the movie but the face is damn nice. Ron Volstad, the artist who does the box art for Dragon (and has done drawings for Squadron Signal, Men at Arms, etc.) lives in Alberta; we help each other out with projects when we can. He tells me that the action figures are done from his drawings - Dragon got a real deal on the Steiner one, since he had done the artwork about 9 years previously for a 1/35 scale model set!

Dragon has the best products, but 21st Century Toys has some alright products - though the faces aren't nearly as good as Dragon's. Dragon's weapons are also much superior. There are also others like Cotswold out there, too.

It is interesting to see the resurgent interest in WW II these days - 21st Century Toys are also releasing 1/16 (?) action figures and vehicle in authentic WW II kit. The only thing we had like that when I was a kid was Corgi toys and Britains miniatures, which were expensive - in addition to the mass produced, historically inaccurate toy soldiers out there.

Combat Mission is part of this trend; World War Two never really left the public consciousness entirely (how could it) but in the wake of Saving Private Ryan (especially) you can see the increased public awareness. Hopefully one or two veterans will be able to pass on knowing they haven't been totally forgotten; though one hopes that the impression doesn't become one of toy and game companies "cashing in" on the misery they went through for our freedom.

I think CMBO falls well outside that category by giving as honest a portrayal as it can of the difficulties that troops faced; the camera shake when the artillery starts falling still freaks me out. For all the blood and supposed "realism" that Close Combat was touted as having, it pales in comparison to CM.

Kind of too bad the 12 inch action figures are so well detailed - most kids won't be able to afford them and parents will be loathe to buy them for the very young - they weren't designed to be played with anyway, as they are very brittle, unlike Hasbro's GI Joe. Even Hasbro has jumped on the collectibles bandwagon, though.

Well excuuuuuuuuuse me!

I seems to me an "action figure" is a contradiction in terms. But however, it does say "action figure" on the box. So I will concede, and from now on when ever you see "doll" in any future post please just assume "action figure" is suppose to be there.

Thank you and have a nice day. tongue.gif

I have quite a Dragon collection building, kinda replacing my Action Men that my well-meaning mother sold when I was a teenageer. ("He won`t need these anymore"...sigh)

The detail is superb! Although the figures are pricey, especially so here in the UK..at least £30 a figure. Their website is at

www.dragon-models.com

Edited to add: anyone wanting these in the UK try:

www.koolcollectables.com, their online ordering is fast and reliable and the catalogue is kept bang up to date.

Friends of the family gave me a collection of 12 inch Hasbro GI Joes in the late 1970s - including the helicopter, a base, I think a submarine, tons of clothes

My mom gave it all away, including some to THE 6 YEAR OLD GIRL NEXT DOOR.

I don't have the heart to show mom the latest price guide on that stuff...

Ultimate Soldier, for one, and maybe Dragon I can't remember, release the dollies... erm... Action Figures also in blister packs with a far lesser amount of kit for relatively inexpensive prices. Uniforms and weapons sets are available at scale in a variety of styles and quality (read prices). Kids can get them to play with and probably wouldn't care about all the bits anyway (much of the webbing and pouches, etc that are not in the blisterpacks are a pain in the ass anyway and difficult enough to deal with if you are going to keep them in a single pose as it is)

Edited for UBB errors and a spelling error.

The people that make the dolls are called 21st Century Toys, and they call them the Ultimate Soldier. I have 8 WWII dolls. 2 Fallschirmjager, 2 Wermacht, 1 3rd infantry guy, 1 Allied motorcycle rider, 1 British airborne guy. I have a motorcycle and a Kettenkrad. The level of detail on all of them is truly astounding. I like to make little stories with them, hehe......

The Dragon figures are by far the best out there. They are also a helluva lot more expensive than the "Ultimate Soldier" dross.

They also do personalities. I believe Dragon currently has a Wittmann figure available.

You get what you pay for, however. I got the 'Gerhard' figure a while back (he's a Wehrmacht Panzerjager NCO)and the attention to detail is downright frightening. Even the stitches in their clothing are correct and period specific.

If they're too rich for your blood, however, try Ultimate Soldiers 1:18 scale figures (the same size as the modern, little GI Joe's). They also have a nice range of vehicles and are pretty accurate. Just got the Panther with an escort squad from my wife for our Anniversary (she knows me too well).

Clubfoot.

The Dragon Wittman figure comes with a figure of Bobby Woll, his gunner and fellow KC winner.

The 1/18 figures and vehicles are novel, but not especially well detailed. The jeep had enough wrong with it that I didn't want to buy it. My friend bought the Bf 109 but was a little disappointed that the swastika wa excised from the tail. Bad enough it was missing, but they put a big black square where it was supposed to be, so you KNOW it's missing.

Michael, my 3 year old boy has developed an interest in "army men" after seeing the Extreme Detail series sitting on my shelf above the PC (Sherman, a half dozen figures and the jeep). They may not be perfect but anything that encourages an interest is good for me. I`m just waiting for him to turn into a jock as he grows up ;-(
