CMM or Combat Mission: Campaign Query

Recommended Posts

BFC, I remember back when work was being done to make an operational overlay from which to create and link individual CM battles into campaigns, based on a persistent OOB. It was called Combat Mission: Campaign. It never made it due to a number of reasons, and it was focused on the x1 engine. I'm curious as to whether the newest engine(4?) has the functionality to have something like this designed and developed?

When CMC was in development it was initially aimed at CMBB. A special version of CMBB was necessary in order to get the stats from a battle and to possibly read the battles that would be created by the Campaign game (which required all of the maps for the campaign to be pre-made in CMBB). Right now I don't think any of the CM2 games has any code like this at the moment. The 'military contract' versions of CMSF2/CMBS put out some end-game stats and, I assume, have the ability to have some weapon behavior/data modified. The end-game output stats however may not be of the type that would be most useful for a campaign system to utilize (from a consumer player perspective). I don't know if BFC would have the rights to distribute this version of the games (they certainly wouldn't have the classified data).

To answer your question ... it is probably doable but only for the reasons that most things are probably doable.  From official announcements, however; the company is not looking at it.  There was talk about 18 months ago of some sort of campaign interface from a third party supported by BFC which doesn't seem to have moved on much but apparently is not dead.  There is a thread about it kicking around somewhere.  I wouldn't expect anything soon.

There are campaigns run over the forums at The Few Good Men. These have a variety of rulesets, but they're always separate from the game. That's not a bad way of doing it, mind you.

I've posted before about the idea of running a Combat Mission campaign as an Engel Matrix, and I still think that's a pretty good idea. You need a third party to manage that, but you could run a convincing campaign with as little as three people.
