SlowMotion
Modern CM games include artillery that can hit targets much more accurately than traditional artillery. How good is it really? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj85GLezCWE
Michael Emrys
I notice that a lot of those were near misses which might or might not have damaged armored vehicles. Michael
SlowMotion
That was my point: how accurate are they? IMO even the near misses were VERY close.

SlowMotion
Probably. It would be interesting to know what kind of targets those special rounds are used for IRL. Well, this video says it's very useful in cities when you want to minimize collateral damage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfESvQIpdz8 Edited January 2, 2018 by SlowMotion

That makes sense. I have the feeling that we have placed too much emphasis on its use in tank sniping. BTW, in case it hasn't already occurred to you, I wouldn't place too much faith on anything you see on YouTube. Michael
SlowMotion
Yes, you have to be careful what to believe in Youtube. Some things are simply made up, but also many things become obsolete fast. In that latter video they say the round costs about 80 000$. In a 2 years older video they mentioned that target price would be 39 000$.

There it says Excalibur's average miss is 1.18 meters.
SlowMotion
This is supposed to be Russian precision shells in use Youtube video
Erwin
Am wondering that when both sides have precision arty and plentiful drones, all vehicular ground combat will cease to exist (all vehicles being KO'd quickly). With ground vehicles ceasing to exist, the only remaining "safe" way to deliver payload will be from an aircraft or drone missile. Good for air force funding maybe?
SlowMotion
I think detecting and destroying drones will be one area that will get more funding. I've read about planes co-working with drones and possibilities are endless. And it's not just in air, but unmanned "vehicles" will also appear on land and sea as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E93-480jsw0
Sgt.Squarehead
Risky against peer opponents, any form of remote control is prone to jamming or even subversion, which leaves cables.....Ask a Goliath team how well that works on an active battlefield.

SlowMotion
Lasers are one anti-drone weapon under development http://www.wearethemighty.com/gear-tech/us-company-shoots-down-5-drones-with-high-energy-laser-weapon
Erwin
Did anyone see the programmed Drone ballet by hundreds of the blighters at Winter Olympics or Las Vegas?? We're not talking sending out a couple, but hundreds of weaponized drones in a highly coordinated manner - some could be EW jammers, some attack craft etc. Right now it's a race to see whether drones can be made effective faster than anti-drone tech (ie just like every other arms race).

Erwin
Quite so... So, the discussion could be whether this is the end of AFV's? (At least when both side have this sort of drone tech.)
SlowMotion
AFVs and similar moving units with weapons may become more often unmanned. So robots fighting other robots. Of course people are still needed because robots can't do everything and can't go everywhere where human soldiers can, but these unmanned, possibly remotely controlled things are getting better year after year. Can you imagine drones with night vision equipment vs humans without similar kit? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVnA-BYUdes Starting from 3:20 you can see how much forest helps.
DerKommissar
Did you see how that round hit the Huey? This is the end, my friend -- end of helicopters. Edited March 19, 2018 by DerKommissar
SlowMotion
You don't need artilliery round to bring down a helicopter. See here what 40mm shells do (at 3 minutes there is one helicopter target example) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uddx-5xmB4k
