John Kettler
Article is called "We Were a Cheerful Cargo" and is in The Paris Review of Literature. The piece talks about sniper training, male reactions and details a surreal clash, in battle, between the spotter and the sniper--with targets in plain sight! The author won the Nobel Prize for Literature for one of her other works. https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2017/07/25/we-were-a-cheerful-cargo/ From the book The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II by Svetlana Alexievich and translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. 76mm
Excellent interview which helps humanize the too-often faceless Red Army, and a real tribute to what the Russians were willing and able to do to defeat the Nazis. rocketman
It is an excellent book. She has also wrote one about the Soviet/Afghan war which is equally well written. I'm about to read the one she wrote with interviews with people who experienced the war on the Eastern Front as children.

Finally, I started to read it. Excellent and shocking. A “must read“ for all war gamers. Especially those, who believe in “realism”.
