panzermartin
Returning to the series after a long break. I remember guns and mortars having the ability to target indirectly thanks to HQ spotters linked with them through command chain. Is this feature removed? Seems you can only issue them artillery mission through the arty window now...
AttorneyAtWar
That was never a feature, indirect fire from infantry guns and the like have only ever been available through the artillery window.
Badger73
Correct as @Raptorx7 says. On map mortars can engage their tubes with direct fire on targets they can spot in addition to being available as on-call artillery via the artillery window. Use the "target command" line-of-sight tool to place rounds directly by the mortar units. The artillery window works for them if, and only if, they are in communication with the FO/Officer calling for fires. You see that as "in" (green) or "out" (red) of contact in the artillery window. A good technique is to leave a radio operator with the mortar section so that artillery window fires can be called as well. panzermartin
Thanks. Thats's strange, I remember manually targeting with mortars/mortar halftracks behind hills etc as long the HQ linked with them had LOS. I tested all the infantry guns that way and it was fun. I think it was quite faster as well...
Vergeltungswaffe
Indirect, on map fire, using an observer that had LOS to the target, was, in fact, a feature. People have short memories. Used a ton of it in the CMMC 3 campaign battles in Tunisia.
womble
Aye. In CMx1. People just weren't imagining panzermartin's break being more than 9 years...
panzermartin
It was in CMx2 and Red Thunder!
panzermartin
Maybe my mind is playing games. I think you are right, I somehow mixed my CMx1 memories with CMx2....
akd
You can place targets without observer LOS during setup.
John Kettler
panzermartin, Thanks in part to larger maps and elevation covering part of what mortars do, weapons such as the leIG 18 can be on map and still conduct indirect fire. I don't recall the details of the procedures offhand, but I can say I pushed hard for the sIG 33, also short ranged and able to fire at very high elevation. Other weapons may also be able to do this. Regards, John Kettler
