I prefer the cold war periods because of the variety of the weapons. Also I hate that in WW2 infantry squads don't really have a weapon against tanks. I love IFV. I love ATGMs.

The Cold War battlefield is just more complex than the ww2.

If you look at WW2 CM titles as chess, then a cold war title is like chess upgraded.

This is why CM is so great. There's something for everyone. I feel the opposite actually. I think the lowered lethality of WW2 enables a lot of imagination. Plus all those Sherman variants 😍

Last time I checked Mexico and Canada have autonomy and territorial integrity. Haven’t occupied or annexed any part of them in a long, long time (but I’m still eyeing parts of Canada).  Cuba and Venezuela also seem bizarrely free of US troops or proxies, despite their hostility to US gov.

    Well there is Guantanamo.

One of the best books on this issue I've read recently was "The Myth of the Eastern Front".

It depicts precisely what you talked about: how the memories of the Eastern Front and Russian participation in WW2 were effectively erased from the public memory in US and Western countries.

Moreover, the authors argue, that the American popular culture to the large extent adopted what was initially the German wartime view on Soviet Union, e.g.  Wehrmacht soldiers  were flawless knights that used superior tactics and weapons to defend European civilization from Eastern barbarian hordes. Wehrmacht war crimes were politely put under the rug in favor of building the image of anti-Bolshevik fighters.

Americans put Franz Halder, the man who designed plan Barbarossa, in charge of the network of German generals who prepared hundreds and hundreds of materials on Eastern front to consult US military. Many guys like Adolf Heusinger seamlessly moved from Hitler's bunker to the chair of NATO Military Committee.  Manstein and Huderian wrote popular memoirs that reinforced German variant of Eastern front history in Western public opinion. Sure, they omit "the bad parts", like their involvement in genocide, and claim that they lost only because they were outnumbered and Hitler gave unprofessional orders.

Surprisingly enough, recently I witness the revival of interest towards Eastern front. Not only the large number of related history books hit the shelves, but many PC games exploited the topic. Maybe I'm wrong, and its my subjective evaluation biased because of my own interest in the subject.

    Yeah, that's a great book!

I think it's more about a lot of Americans wanting to fight the Communists, and Korea would be too.. ambiguous for them.

For older generations maybe. But young people in America don't generally have the same connections to Communism.

What we may be experiencing here is a change of generations in the hobby.  Us old-timers wanted to primarily play the German side, we loved early WW2, Barbarossa and had many mods in CM1 for Poland '39, Fall of France and Sealion etc.

One gets the impression that the new members to this hobby are more interested in fighting almost exclusively as the US in late war periods where the US gets to kick ass.  North Africa is ignored cos it was primarily a Brit show until Op Torch, and the US didn't do all that well in places like Kasserine etc.  So, no CM:Afrika Korps.

The introduction of Steam distribution means that BF is on its way to pandering to the largest "lowest common denominator" market which, as noted elsewhere, seems to be younger and primarily interested in playing as the US kicking ass.

Yeah, I don't think this accurate. I think a lot of Americans actually might like playing the Germans more. Probably thanks to the History channel portraying everything as the UNSTOPPABLE BEAST that the German TIGER and PANTHER was.

Yes.  However, I'm not sure yet if we can make it work with games that Slitherine has not yet released.

After Cold War is released we'll be working with Slitherine on CMBN.  Every 3 months or so another CM Family will get its turn.  As with Shock Force 2 and Black Sea, all Modules/Packs get released at the same time as the Base Game, all will be up on Steam, and all Battlefront keys will work seamlessly for Steam.

    Wow! Awesome

OK, time to clear up some stuff.

We are jointly publishing Cold War with Slitherine.  Until the Slitherine launches there is no Steam version and Slitherine isn't planning on launching until June.  Registering ahead of time doesn't do anything in terms of accessing Cold War.  Having a pre-order key from us also doesn't get you advanced access to Cold War.

So why is Cold War going to take a few more months to come out for Slitherine?  Because they asked us to put in some multiplayer support that no Combat Mission has (so far).  And it needs to be extensively tested.  Which is why an otherwise nearly complete Combat Mission game with traditional features isn't being released by Slitherine sooner.

Does this mean you guys are going to have to wait until June to get your hands on a version of Cold War with the new multiplayer features and Steam version?  Yes.   Does this mean you will have to wait until June to play Cold War that meets normal Battlefront release standards?  No.

Confused?  Well, no need to be!

The features Slitherine has asked us to put in require lots and lots and lots and lots of testers.  Waaaaay more than we can do with our traditional method of testing.  Fortunately, we know exactly where to find people who want to help out.  A lot of people :D

As soon as Cold War is up to our usual quality standards you will be the first to know.

    Steve

Will this support be added to all the other titles eventually?

So, early 30s? Me too bro. I have actually convinced a couple other NCOs in my unit to start playing the game with me but it was easy because they both already played tabletop wargames.

Nice dude! I have some close friends from college that are huge history buffs like me, but they tend to stick to the academic side of things. I'd also be a little bit more fervent in getting them to play if the multiplayer aspects of CM weren't such a hassle. One of the main reasons I stick to single player.

I know what you mean, I can still remember - for now at least 😁.

I don't game for social interaction usually, but the few people I do play with are usually just turned off by the complexity of CM and maybe a little bit of the archaic feel. I pity them.

Hmm, good question. I can only answer for myself and the guys I occassionally PBEM with. Most came from the Steel Panthers games or ASL games to CMBO and stayed here on or off. None of us is younger than 51 ranging up to 68. Don´t know if that is representative for the whole community, though.

No one my age will play this game with me 😄

For CMBN?  My two favorites are Devil's Descent and Kampfgruppe Engel. Devil's Descent is a company sized American paratrooper campaign just perfect in scope. Kampfgruppe Engel is an innovative campaign where you play as Germans in the Falaise Pocket. It's a tough one, but fun and diverse.

Check this thread for some of my thoughts on these and a few more.

    Edit: It's Engel, not Engle

Yes I've been contemplating these two campaigns. I'll have to flip a coin!

In the last year I really enjoyed slowly slogging through the Scottish Corridor campaign in CMBN set during Operation Epsom. I say slog because it’s wet, muddy and the SS you face are tenacious and dug in. But I had an absolute blast even if it can be tough going. I think the campaign maker @Paper Tiger is one of the best, the maps are beautiful and realistic looking and the enemy positions and AI plans keep you on your toes. There’s a nice mix of forces, attack and defence and manageable battle sizes.

Adding to my enjoyment of playing the campaign, was watching after each mission to see how Double Vision did in his epic video AAR series on YouTube  >

Ah yes I watched the whole series of that actually. Now I just need to wait till I forget what he did so I don't use any of the exploits! 😅

this is what QB selection looks like for me in which the months they should appear, the Aufklarung battalion is available but not the bread and butter Gebrigsjager, do I have a bad install or something? please let me know because while I can build scenarios with them they are missing on this list. E7m7L0w.png
    (doing a clean install now)

Okay so I'm both right and wrong. The waffen ss has a Gebirgsjaeger Battalion in 45. The German Grenadier Battalions have a uniform option of Gebirgsjaeger. So that kind of simulates mountain troops right? Was there a fundamental operating difference between a SS mountain division and a Heer one? Sorry bout that!

sounds like we're a month out, sad but whatever. the Rome to Victory wait was worth it,  (even if I'm still salty about no gebirgsjäger in QB) so I'm gonna be content just sitting around playing Italy for my CM fix.

Gebirgsjager are in QB though. Germany Army/Gebirgsjaeger Battalion. There's even a uniform option for them. What's a real travesty is no armored support for Brazilian and Indian battalions in QB.
