kohlenklau Hurtgen Mods
Abbasid111 replied to kohlenklau's topic in CM Final Blitzkrieg Maps and Mods
Cool! Another one to check out. I am sure it is just as enjoyable as your other two small scenarios. I finally checked V3 of "When Trumpets Fade". Just as much fun as the first time I played the initial version. -

Russian Motor Rifle tactics
Abbasid111 replied to VladimirTarasov's topic in Combat Mission Black Sea
@cbennett88, you can get infantry to toss grenades into a building before entering it. After you have suppressed the building continue the suppression while moving your assault team up. Have them do a pause at the entrance and give them a target briefly command. The grenades will fly. -
It's amazing how many myths are still out there regarded as gospel. Almost to a man German generals writing their post-war memoirs blamed their defeat on Uncle Adolf. Not one that I have read have ever admitted that the Russians learned from their mistakes and simply got better and better at warfare. Even Napoleon at Leipzig said of the allies arrayed against him 'these dogs have learned something'

Sublime, I have had success as a defender in an assault or attack QB. Hard to pull off but satisfying when it does happen. I agree with you, using a large or huge map requires you allocate resources to actual recon work and or setting up of OP/LPs. I think the intensity and lethality of modern combat leads to a lesser concentration of men per kilometer then certainly WW2.

HI Sublime, it just seemed to me after a few games where the map size matched the battle size that an increase in map size was in order. More room for the forces to move around and not always a head to head slugmatch. I have done quite a few battles in assault and attack modes. That seems more realistic for an attacker/defender urban fight. For more open, ie non-MOUT terrain, I do like probe but I will do Meeting Engagements if that is what my opponent wishes.

+1 If Cooper had just stuck with what he had seen and experienced and the actual wartime functioning of armor maintenance units instead of editorializing about things above his pay grade he would have come up with a much better book.

Not been playing since CMBO. Where to begin?
Abbasid111 replied to PanzerBlitz's topic in Combat Mission Final Blitzkrieg
Ahh, The Next War, NATO, Cityfight, RedStar/WhiteStar. I was an SPI junkie back in the day after being introduced to wargames by a high school history teacher. Then came miniatures. At least these days I don't have to spend hours painting to field an army! -

Can you transfer ammo between tanks?
Abbasid111 replied to Da_General420's topic in Combat Mission Final Blitzkrieg
Much of my tank warfare reading has been from Commwealth sources over the years since I am a big North Africa and Brit operations in Europe fan. It seems to have been standard practice, or it occurred so often that it seems like standard practice, that an unwounded troop or squadron commander would attempt to take over the nearest tank to him. Just the commander mind you, not the entire crew being replaced. I am not sure how often an entire crew got replaced in the middle of a battle. I have not come across a single example in my reading. Usually the crew of a knocked out tank was treating their wounded and trying to make it safety not trying to hijack another tank. -

I don't know about the CM1 campaign system since I am only familiar with the current CM2 games. Usually you have a core group or unit that you command through the campaign. Sometimes other attachments to your core command will appear and you won't always have your total command together in every battle. A lot of campaigns advance depending on how well you did in the previous battle. If you win you play battle A but if you lose you play battle b. Also check out user made mods, scenarios and campaigns. fortress Italy is one of my favorites out of the WW2 titles. -

The nice thing about the CM2 series is that whatever new features are developed for one game they get patched, we they are applicable, to other games in the series. As far as where to start it depends on where your interest lies. If you are an ost front guy then Red Thunder, covering Operation Narration, is the game for you. If you are a west front kind of guy then you have CMBN, or Final Blitzkrieg. If you like sun baked rolling hills and an earlier start (1943) then it is Fortress Italy. The biggest bang for the buck, IMHO, is the CMBN Big Bundle. You get the base game, the Commonwealth and Market-Garden modules, hours and hours of play. -

You didn't need to wait for Band of Brothers for honesty about the killing of German prisoners...it was in mass market print half a century before Band appeared in print or on a tv.
