  1. I assume this is tongue in cheek. I think that it can be a real pain to attempt, within the time limits afforded by a scenario or QB, to try to do a house to house (or other LOS limiting terrain) search of a victory objective. Or perhaps some of the maps I've played on have had insanely large objective areas. One can win by playing hide and seek, which hardly seems realistic after a point.
  2. Hit the rear armour! You've got them at their most vulnerable!
  3. Remember the episode in The Simpsons where Mr Burns is making fun of a bunch of German businessmen? "Ooo, the Germans are mad at me!! Ooo" I think with that tank of mine the Germans would be saying, "oooo the Americans are mad at us! Ooo!"
  4. Oh, as I said, I doubted anything in the game is irrelevant! So as you understand it, the number will affect BOTH chances of recovery to a less detrimental morale state, AND the unit's resistance to worsening morale states?
  5. I'm not concerned about the morale state progression here, just wondering if +1 is a good thing or a bad thing and what it signifies. If, as Doug's query hints at, one cannot improve morale state, then it would appear the number is not indicative of anything. As I suspect nothing in this game is irrelevant, it has to mean something else, I'd guess? Edit: Captn Hawkeye indicated one can recover from Rattled. So does the +1 indicate an increase in the chances of doing so?
  6. I wasn't aware that the unit leader affected more than the leadership factor. What you're all saying is he can impart a modifier to any of those four things?
  7. It was all 0 (as in no bonus or penalties) The leader penalty of -1 you see is due to the replacement commander. I set this force to have everything at no modifiers.
  8. I think the pic tells you what I'm asking. Clearly the modifier needs explanation.
  9. Whaaaa?? No no, you can't back out of it. I have a firm commitment from you! Says so in the manual..."IanL guarantees at least ten tanks will be..." I realize YMMV always applies. Random factors, placement, movement speed, no worries. Minefields are not a defence into themselves.
  10. Wow, that's amazingly effective! The whole thing about units moving around the immobilized one and accidentally avoiding the mines isn't something I considered.
  11. As someone who designed maps and scenarios for other games, I have to say that this is the best approach. The map edge is an abstraction, a limit on the area of operations. One can argue that the forces would be able to move a few dozen metres to the left or right, (taking one off the map in the process). So one can extend the map the few more metres needed, and then again, make the same argument, over and over until your map spans from the Bay of Biscay to the Urals. So if one accepts that the map delineates the area of operations, then using all of it is logical and suitable and appropriate. Ken's use of impassable terrain along the edge satisfies some visual esthetics, it also affords an interesting opportunity to put trees or other LOS/LOF obstructions, or, choose not to, to create the tactical situation you wish players to experience using the map.
  12. You're right, mines in a QB can be pricey. Still, their presence, if it costs a few casualties and makes the opponent uncertain where there are more, can make their value exceed their price
  13. This is useful, thank you. I assume if I wanted a more dense mine filed I can put several in one action space.
  14. I must be doing something wrong. I can't hide to shoot, but when I shoot I get pounded. Have to play more and figure it out. Thanks.
  15. No, definitely not hedges, these are much taller than the men behind them. What is happening is that I do have them fire at designated targets, the return fire is pretty effective; it's just that I thought the hedgerows would provide more cover than they are. Short ranged cover arcs are something I'm using at this point (In fact I can't believe I didn't before! *facepalm*)
  16. I can imagine! The challenge (in my view) has been separating occasions of luck not being in your side but doing nothing wrong, from that proverbial idiot in the jumpsuit with a megaphone.
  17. Yet another information gathering thread from..well..me. Mines. Scary Devils in the real world, while conventions on their use (or their banning) have been signed. In our carefree and happy days of WWII, they were not so proscribed. How do you use them? I know how to buy them and deploy them. I don't mean that. I mean, in game: -does the opponent see the little minefield flag as easily as I do, or is that only revealed if they already set off a mine or what? -if I put single mine (I'm sure it represents many more than just one) at say, an opening in a wall, is that going to be effective? Or is there some critical mass where one has to put a larger amount over a wider area to actually have an impact?
  18. Interesting responses to my post, thank you all. I think a lot of this does come from experience, and I suppose I'd accelerate that knowledge gathering if I sat down and ran a few experiments to see things from "the other side's" viewpoint. As it stands now, it's the school of hard knocks, as I position troops behind hedgerows thinking they're fairly well hidden and finding them being pounded and slaughtered by rifle fire. The AARs posted here by Bil Hardenberger (among others) showed me a lot about splitting troops, using recon and the like. It all ties together to avoid detection, but the more factors you bring in, the more techniques one has to master. That's not to say I'm not enjoying myself. But man am I making a lot of truly dumbass mistakes. My pixeltruppen, were they real, might frag me!
  19. You understood the choice of words in my thread title, didn't you??? That video does indeed show the importance of Not Being Seen. Enough of that rotten old BBC show...
  20. That's what it feels like, yes! Even behind hedgerows, even hidden. Grrrr Swine enemy!
  21. Don't give up Chappy. There really are a number of options to explore in terms of image editing. Be patient and enjoy this, map and scenario making are a way of making something very personal in the game, and well worth it.
