  1. Maybe there is a job opportunity there for one of us? Would the title be: Proof Reader or Pointer Outer of the Bloody Obvious ?
  2. I use Win 7 and originally had CMSF of an XP then Vista machine. As mentioned there is not a huge difference game wise between the 3 OS but I do find that Win7 is heaps more stable than any windows I have used before. Certainly Vista and even XP. My game runs far better now on my Win7 machine but that is because it has a lot more RAM (4 Gb) and particularly Video RAM (1Gb dedicated not shared). I can also hook it up to my 101cm HD Widescreen TV via an HDMI plug.... awesome! you can actually taste the sand.
  3. I think you can change how anything looks but not how anything works I could mod all the Brits to look like Aussies, change their SA80s to look like F88's, make them taller and better looking etc, but underneath they'd still be whinging poms wondering where the tea is
  4. I'd rather be mates with the wolves. But hey this has been debated back and forth numerous times on the 'net I am sure and no real resolution ever reached so probably best to leave it at that.
  5. I think you have a really important point there lefty ID theft is rampant at the moment. The number of offers I get from Nigeria etc is astounding and I am sure it is because of leaky personal details.
  6. No I was merely stating that I find it hard to accept if one does not agree with something you should have the right to take up arms to get your point across. Liberty is not the sheep contesting the vote because he is well armed but being able to contest the vote without fear because of the society he lives in.
  7. "a good thing socio-economically as it diminishes the coercive power of the state relative to the sturdy Jeffersonian yeoman." Is it only me who finds it unsettling that the are those who advocate that a system of checks and balances in a democratic society should also include a provision for armed rebellion or to put it another way enshrining civil war as a fundamental principal of society ?
  8. Noooo Burkina Faso is where the big dollars are, APPARENTLY the finance minister's second cousin's aunt had all of this money left to her but cannot access it and he has picked ME out of everyone to look after it for him ! What are the odds of that ? $US 40,325,000 and all I have to do is give him my details. I'll be handing out the free CM games soon enough my friends.
  9. I suppose mentioning I am $400,000 short for a Lamborghini would be inappropriate? All jokes aside tho' it is a sadly rare example of extraordinary generosity
  10. Pardon my ignorance but how is a fictional US and NATO invasion of Syria ok but Israel not?
  11. There is the Airborne at Sainte-Mère-Église? Also the battles in Saint-Lo and Vire? I think if you have a look at Operation Cobra you will find quite a few clashes in villages and towns that has the US Infantry against the Wermacht. If you want a real city fight look at the capture of Cherbourg
  12. The books are not a bad series, not the best I have read but it does spoon up some interesting ideas, especially the concept that future ppl spawning rapid technological development and really changing the course of things. What is really interesting about the story is the way that people from the future interact with those of the past, especially with the knowledge of "history" they have.
  13. I think you hit it on the head when you mention the amount of weight a unit is carrying does not seem to effect our iSoldiers. I am not surprised that RL soldiers do not carry something that is over 20kg and more than a metre long if they do not have to. I think there is a bit of psychology at work here as well. The Javelin is a great weapon and allows the user to shoot and then run away and it makes a spectacular bang when it hits the target, so I guess the boys would be fairly tempted to let one loose when they get into a sticky spot. Of course the weapon is not so good with targets other than armour and is frightfully expensive so perhaps the doctrine of leaving the Javelin in the wagon is an effort to have it used only when it needs to be used. Of course if a tank shows up and you have to run back to the car to get it ..........
  14. Unless of course you are NOT wearing Helmet, vest, Eye protection and ear muffs. It's a bit like saying you can fire an RPG-7 indoors providing you are not standing behind it and are wearing a bomb disposal suit. I guess you could fire it in a pinch and have a better chance of nil harm than the earlier weapons and of course you can fire it from a prepared enclosed position that has been designed with the limitations of the unit in mind but I think the point is it is still a long way from a "use anywhere" weapon that a game rule allowing indoor firing would indicate.
  15. I can't comment on the RPG-7 specifically but I do know the M72 which is similar in terms of the back blast. The Danger Area for each is at least 15m behind the weapon. I guess this distance does contain a fair margin of safety so if you were in a big room with all the doors and windows open you could conceivably fire the weapon. I doubt you would be able to hear too much for sometime after as the concussion of the back blast would be deafening. The Javelin cannot be fired indoors. It has a much larger warhead and therefore much larger back blast. The "soft lunch" of the Javelin refers, not to a soggy Ham and Cheese, but to a short duration rocket motor that shoots the round out of the tube but then cuts out so it does not fry the gunner. This rocket still produces a considerable back blast. The flight motor cuts in once it is safely away. The Javelin also launches at quite a steep angle and then climbs rapidly to 200m or so. I would think that you would need to be very close to, if not hanging out of, the window to fire the weapon and not hit the roof or eaves. Not the best spot to be if you are trying to hide. As for the SMAW no way it can be fired from indoors : " At 152.3 decibels, the weapon is one of the loudest on the battlefield...... " Not good to be inside with this noise level, louder than a grenade which can kill by concussion alone. "The backblast extends in a 90-meter, 60° cone to the rear of the weapon. The backblast is lethal out to 30 metres (98 ft), and still extremely dangerous to 90 metres (300 ft). The resultant shock wave can even cause sympathetic detonation of unsecured ammunition. " So maybe you can fire from a multi storey parking station but from an apartment building ???? There is however a program to produce a confined space round for the SMAW, expected in service date is 2012 It is only the confined space version of the M136/AT-4 (the M72 replacement) that can be fired from inside a building. It has a saltwater counter mass that reduces the BBDA. I do not know if the game version is the CS version but it is becoming the more commonly issued varient.
  16. The A3 has a lower MV purely because it is a heavier projectile. The A2 is quoted at 1680m/s and the A3 Estimated at 1500 or so. I cannot see how the ERA could possibly detect the velocity difference of only 180m/s. If it was that precise it would be child's play to defeat the A3 round as all you have to do is keep dialling down the reaction velocity so that your enemy will have to reduce the round's velocity, until you get to the point where the round will not penetrate at all. As we are talking muzzle velocity that would mean that any high velocity round would the round would fail to ignite the ERA at longer range as the velocity drops off. A more logical answer is that the A3 round is simply a further refinement of the earlier A2 and able to better survive the detonation of the Kontakt.
  17. The article says they are actually faster. The original idea with ERA was that it would only react to the extremely fast velocities of HEAT detonations, so they couldn't be detonated by small arms. I think that this will still detonate, it just will not have much of an effect on the longer thicker rod of the new M829 rounds. The Shtora is a system rather than a single item. It has Smoke Dispensers, laser jammers, IR/EO jammers and well as a threat axis detection set up. The unit shown and named is only the IR jammer section of a wider system which I presume US tanks are equipped with. Of course always tricky to find true info on this stuff outside the official secrets act
  18. I think it is one of those acronyms that are made up so that the acronym itself is the thing that makes sense not the supposed "real" name. So rather than just say Autoloader it might be...... Future Armoured Second Tier Diverse Reloading Automatic Weapon ? Anyone got another ?
  19. AN/VLQ-8 Active Protection System. Missile Countermeasure Device (MCD) SACLOS, (semi-automatic command line of sight) ATGMs work by having the operator keep the target in the cross hair. The launcher detects where the missile is by "seeing" an Infra Red (IR) flare in the base of the missile and then sending the corrections to the missile to make it fly into the cross hairs and hence the target. I understand the AN/VLQ-8 and similar systems work by producing an IR light that is mimics the flare in the missile, making the the launcher unit think that the missile is already on target so it sends no corrections and , with a bit of luck (!) , the missile misses. A "fire and forget" IR Image ATGM like the US Javlin ATGM (not the Brit AA Missile) might also be fooled as it takes a "picture" of the target and guides itself to it. If that picture suddenly becomes a bright flare that the MCD provides it might break the lock. More likely tho', the missile would just continue to the now much "brighter" target. If the MCD was on when the missile was locked and then turned off when it was launched then it might work better? Good luck detecting what type of missile has just been launched tho'. Laser systems or the old manual wire guided systems of course would not be fooled.
  20. Kontakt-5 v M829A2 From Wikipedia: "The plates are arranged in such a way as to move sideways rapidly when the explosive detonates. This will force an incoming kinetic energy penetrator or shaped charge jet to cut through more armour than the thickness of the plating itself, since "new" plating is constantly fed into the penetrating body. A kinetic energy penetrator will also be subjected to powerful sideways forces, which might be large enough to cut the rod into two or more pieces." " The M829A2 was rapidly developed to have the capability to destroy tanks equipped with Kontakt-5 reactive armor. The M829A2 has several improvements over the M829A1, including: a longer depleted uranium penetrating rod than previous designs, giving it improved performance over previous types of anti-tank rounds; better manufacturing processes for the penetrator; and a partially cut propelling charge to allow it to be more energetic while loading like a stick charge. The M829A2 was also the first APFSDS round to use carbon fiber sabot petals, reducing the weight of the overall round and allowing for the larger penetrator. Combined these features boost its muzzle velocity by 100 m/s to 1680 m/s, while operating at slightly lower pressure." Looks like it will be ignited but because the penetrator is longer than the amount of armour the Kontakt has and it is better made and less likely to break up it will not be defeated ?
  21. Hi there, Looking for anyone to PBEM or Live any time zone is OK. (All Modules) PM Me !
  22. It is more a matter of consistency, rolled armour will tend to be more even through out. Cast armour will tend to be not so uniform. Cast armour however can me moulded more easily into smooth shapes which can have better deflection qualities.
