Fortresses
wlape3 replied to Baron's topic in Strategic Command - World War 1: The Great War 1914-1918
I'd have to agree with Sharkman. While I've never been to Verdun I have seen the Normandie beaches and the fortifications there are still formidable despite war damage and 60 plus years of neglect. There is also the example of Monte Casino which was not used as a German strong point until AFTER it was leveled by Allied bombing. The same can be said of Stalingrad or Berlin where the creation of rubble afforded their defenders with some level of protection while hampering enemy attempts to dig them out. -
Game locking up???
wlape3 replied to CSS's topic in Strategic Command - World War 1: The Great War 1914-1918
Any error messages or does the computer just freeze? Can you bring up the task manager? Will the computer unfreeze after a period of time? The only significance of mid-war is the amount of units in play and the calculation load. What kind of PC, CPU, RAM, etc do you have and what is your operating system? -
Don't think so. There are 65 nations available in SC-WWI, the only addition being 1 additional major power.

Connection Problem
wlape3 replied to Mancspartan's topic in Strategic Command - World War 1: The Great War 1914-1918
You need to go into the router setup. This can usually be accomplished through IE or any other web browser. Just type in your router ip address. It is usually something like 192.108.104.1 You will also have to use the default password. Take a look at your router literature. It should be explained there under the topic of "internet gaming" or something similar. -

Anyone using winxp 32 bit has to upgrade to winxp 64 bit to use more than 3.5 GB of ram. I assume this is true for Vista and Win 7 32 bit versions as well but I don't know this for a fact. WWI runs about the same on my laptop with 4 GB of RAM winxp pro 32 bit as it does on my desktop with 16 GB of RAM and Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I assume this is due to the usual windows bloat effect. The newer the version the slower it runs. -

Are you using routers? If you are, then you will have to enable pass-through for each others ip adress. -
How is the WW2 campaign?
wlape3 replied to AstroCat's topic in Strategic Command - World War 1: The Great War 1914-1918
I think it is as much fun, probably more, than the previous iterations of the game system. The only drawback seems to be the lack of user generated WWII mods for the new engine. Calm Before The Storm is a fine one though and Cantona66 keeps tweaking and updating it on a regular basis. -

Tactical Bombers, aka, flying artillery like Stukas. -

In SC the sequence for tank units is move => attack. You must attack while the attacking unit is selected, otherwise the opportunity will be lost. Unfortunately, you cannot combine units for a single attack; instead you must attack in sequence. Thus, you are better off "softening up" your intended target with artillery, rockets, naval gunfire or bombing before using a regular unit. This way you can accumulate experience while minimizing your losses. The two options you are seeing when you right click on a unit and pick "properties" refer to the unit itself and the tile it is sitting on. When the tile contains at least one feature (terrain, resource, etc) you will be offered a choice to examine those properties as well as those of the unit. Kommandant has the right idea, the only "stupid" question is the one you had the opportunity to ask but didn't . -

It's possible your opponent has upgraded to the 1.031 hot fix while you are still on 1.03. -

It's good to know that you are getting good performance on an older machine. Sounds like it's not the game engine so much as it is the OS. -

We have very similar systems. I have Win7 Ultimate 64 bit, Phenom II @ 3.8 GHz, 16 GB of ram, (1) 6950 2GB DDR5. Your system should be more than sufficient. The only other performance improvement I have is my boot and game drive is a 160 GB SSD in the PCE 4 slot. This only makes a noticeable difference on the game start and saves. Sounds like Hubert may be on to something. Let's hope he's got this one! -

Should be relatively easy to do by modifying the script responsible for this. When I encounter a situation which was not anticipated by the original script I usually modify it to produce the behavior I'm looking for. That's the real beauty of SC. -

Agree on the Russian Civil War idea. It's a fascinating subject which has never been fully explored. Should be a natural for this system. -

Win 7 has a lot to do with the issue in my opinion. Try disabling some of the advanced display features. Win 7 is a resource hog. You need a fast system with lots of ram to not notice an appreciable performance difference between it and XP. You can also try the 64 bit edition which can use more than 3.5 GB of ram. If the above doesn't help try installing XP in a dual boot and running the game under that. You can also try Game Booster which does seem to help some. -

I had these same problems in the editor as in the game itself. The editor became almost painful to use. I don't have these issues anymore since I upgraded my PC and, probably most importantly for the game, have implemented all the acceleration options in the recent releases. AMD Phenom I x4 @2.3 GHz => AMD Phenom II x4 @ 3.8 GHz NVidia 7600 GS => AMD Radeon 6950 2 GB DDR5 ASUS M2N Premium Vista MB Nforce 590 => Gigabyte GA-990FA-UD7 8 GB DDR2 800 DRAM => 16 GB DDR3 14900 DRAM I suspect the above PC upgrades are responsible for the improvement in the editors performance. -
Free unit giveaway traps
wlape3 replied to Glabro's topic in Strategic Command - World War 1: The Great War 1914-1918
These are all in the unit.txt file under the events subfolder. Since this is just a text file you can easily import it into excel and parse the units by allegiance and country. Also included are the arrival tiles and ranges. Not as easy as having a ready made table but doable. -

It's usually a configuation option under the video settings. I have Win 7 Ultimate and will see where it can be found there. I have the same issue regarding unit density and game speed. As the AI has to handle more and more units the speed noticably declines. Try overclocking your cpu a bit.
