  1. Are you sure? I always thought this was the proper way to position to position a panzer in WW2:

HAND ME THE T-34 MANUAL!!! Im pretty sure i can dig out the historical version of this sketch.

Yup, that's the way. Despite it's many flaws, the MMORPG World of Tanks taught me this specific, very important lesson about the Tiger and Tiger II. That if I angled my front to the approaching enemy about 20 degrees of centre, my survivability in a fight went way up when the shells start flying and hitting. That slight off-angle makes a lot of difference to a Tiger.

Still felt the Tiger's armour was outclassed by many other tanks at my "tier" but I'd generally hang back in fights with my upgraded main weapon and act as sniper for my team ... when an enemy got engaged with another team member or bottled up by terrain and offered a weak side or rear shot, I could generally do a lot of damage.

  2. For Windows systems ...

    System Requirements MINIMUM:

    Operating System: Windows XP/Vista/Win7

Processor: Pentium IV 1.8 GHz or equivalent speed AMD processor

Video Card: GeForce 5200 or Radeon 9200 (32 Megabyte VRAM or better and must support 1024x768 or higher resolution) in OpenGL

Sound Card: DirectX 9 compatible Sound Card

    System Memory: 256 Megabytes RAM

    Hard Drive Space: 3.5 Gigabyte

Other Requirements: CD Drive (not needed for download version)

The game does not work in a virtualized environment (virtual machine)

    System Requirements SUGGESTED:

    Operating System: Windows XP/Vista/Win7

Processor: Pentium IV 2.8 GHz or equivalent speed AMD processor or better

Video Card: GeForce 6800 or Radeon x850 (256 Megabyte VRAM or better and must support 1024x768 or higher resolution) in OpenGL

Sound Card: DirectX 9 compatible Sound Card

System Memory: 1 Gigabyte or more RAM

    Hard Drive Space: 4 Gigabyte

Other Requirements: CD Drive (not needed for download version, but recommended for backup)

The game does not work in a virtualized environment (virtual machine)

Full OSX specs to follow in the coming days/weeks ... 10.6 and an Intel machine known requirements.

  3. What if you want to give away one as a present?

The person getting it can, even by accident, use up all your activations.

And how many will you give back after all are used up and somebody calls service?

I plan on simply ordering it twice ... one SteelBook and one D/L only from two separate email accounts and using two different credit cards. The D/L copy I'm giving away on Insidemacgames. I hope that overcomes the possible issues that could arise with only one serial number. Or I could always run my "trivia contest", determine the winner, and just get them to buy their own copy and PayPal them the money.

  4. I'd like the release date too, since I'd like to plan my vacation a bit (currently aimed at last week of April). However if it comes out at the end of that week and not before, I'd move it by one week.

The most "accurate" date I've seen according to the good folks at BF is ... "Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy is scheduled for release around the end of April, 2011." Around the end ... take that as you will, I suppose. I'm not sure there is a specific "release day" yet mentioned.

  5. Gummy Small Person is correct :) The editor in CMBN is for all intents and purposes (at the moment) the same as the one in CMSF. So playing about with the one in CMSF will set you up for creating scenarios in CMBN. Simples.

I haven't been able to play any CM engine game since CMBB and the RAVE graphics engine debacle and the beginnings of OSX 10+ years ago. "Playing about with the one in CMSF" isn't an option unfortunately. I'll just sit on my hands and wait for the pre-order to pop up for us sadly OSX types.

  6. Pardon my history, but didnt the US first encounter the Tiger in Africa? Am I wrong to remember it was in the Kasserine Pass?

No, you're correct. February 20, 1943 was when the Americans with their high-sillouhette M3 Lee and Grants met Tigers for the first time. The German tanks were commanded by Lieutenant General Heinz Ziegler. 44 of 51 of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Armored Regiment Sherman's were destroyed in one action. Not a good day for US tank commanders but then again their tactics were wrong ... they attempted one-on-one fights with the German armour, whereas the Germans attacked in wolf-packs of tanks that overwhelmed individuals.

  7. Yeah, the current us armed forces only call officers sir. And even though the germans also have guns, our guts still did ok. ;) Why don't you guys post some more?

Really? I wasn't aware of that. I'll have to look into when that change took place ... must've been in the past 30 years I guess because when I was last on a US Army base (upper state NY) with my regiment in the 80s I think that everyone above you was referred to as sir. Hmm. I do recall being told to keep my beret on at all times to ID me as a Canuck.

Weird Google and Wiki still seem to be OK with addressing a US NCO as either his rank or "sir". Must delve deeper while I wait for the OSX pre-order.

  8. On the order page ...

  9. U.S. Army? Fight for forces that call anyone above their own rank sir?

Hell, in the Canadian Army you get constantly reminded that anyone below the rank of Lieutenant actually works for their money. You don't "Sir!" a Master Corporal or Warrant Officer or lowly Corporal, you call them by their rank. That's what a real army does. (Besides correctly pronouncing the rank of "Lieutenant".) ;)

P.S. Awesome vid btw. The period music is, well, so defining.

  10. Let's just hope that enough of us have the nerve to hold our monetary fire until the Mac version is within LOS.

Just stay steady, man. Don't pull that trigger yet. What's another week or 10 days compared to the almost 11 years since the original OS9 release of CMBO. Steve's mashing keys hard for us right now to squeeze the last little optimizations outta that lovely lovely OSX code and then we're off to the races. Won't be long now.

  11. Confirmed... CMx2 uses OpenGL, therefore cards with DirectX 11 support don't specifically aid CM's performance.

    Steve

Don't talk about stuff like that. The minute you mention graphics the RAVE monster/debacle I'd locked away many many years ago (OSX 10.0) breaks out of the tiny room I trapped him in and causes me to have shortness of breath and start worrying about my platform choice. ;)
