  1. That's what I would do when I was still using a dial-up connection. I'd set it up to run and then go to bed. This time wasn't that bad. I set it up and then fixed and ate my breakfast. Relaxed for a while and when I came to check on it, it was done.

I bought my 1st thumb drive (512M for $60) so I could sneaker-net my CMBB turns to work and use their internet instead of via dialup at home. It's still in the desk drawer right here [looking at it now].

At the time the only high speed internet in the neighborhood was cable TV and I had Dish. :D

  2. And it almost certainly won't be a package. Might as well buy RT now and start saving the $10 for the v3.0 upgrade to BN in a couple of months. Unless they decide to make October '44 to end of war in the ETO a series of additional modules for BN, rather than the originally-aired plan to make a new family for the Autumn onwards, the only new content for x2v2 games is going to be packs, when they're eventually released, and they'll only require x2v3 if they include flame. Which is actually pretty likely.

I'd like to see it tossed in with the funnies from D-Day.

  3. It's great that Tank Riders are in the code for CMRT.

From my Panzer Blitz/Leader days, I do remember that tank riders were NOT permitted for the Allies in Panzer Leader. I was wondering about 3.0 upgrade for the western front, are tank riders in the plan? For both Axis and Allies?

  4. Just being allowed to turn off screen edge scrolling would be nice.

Simple industry standard shortcut keys like CTRL-S (or even near-standard, like ALT-S) for "Save" (surely you save at least as often as you Quit...).

Scroll bars in the pre-game UI. Scroll bars in the unit infor pane.

One more digit in the ammo count for the unit info pane.

Simple text editing in text entry boxes like savename.

Double-click to start a game. Double-click anywhere in the control scheme.

Consistent use of RETURN to act on the default action in a dialog, including game start stuff.

The "Compass-that-is-not-a-compass-but-looks-a-bit-like-one". Yes there are mods for it, but why is it even necessary to apply a mod to a basic element of the UI to get it to work like you'd intuitively expect it to?

UI != icons and graphics; they're fine. Functional and amenable to prettification, but largely adequate to the needs they serve (though possibly a bit hard to read for the longer-sighted on larger resolutions). The controls are what trip people up.

Just because you can get used to something doesn't make it all fine and dandy. I'm looking forward to trying the new camera modes. I'd like to see similar experiments with selection/deselection mechanics; "Left-click = select; right-click = act" has always been a schema that made intutitive sense to me. It would eliminate the "setting a move order to some other unit because you hadn't cancelled the order mode before going on to the next unit" errors, and reduce the total number of mouse clicks needed to play a turn, since you wouldn't have to deselect before selecting a new unit, as you now often do. Currently, RMB is underused, IMO.

Good list. I'd like to add.

Scroll bars on 2D Map editor.

Move the "DONE" button away from the forward/back/pause buttons. I've been focused on the screen and while doing some repeated instant replay, I've had the cursor accidentally drift to the "DONE" button.

Knowing BFC: Look for GUI updates in 4.0 release. Thanking them in advance.

  5. I'm curious. Suppose, in theory, a complete-game continuous re-player were developed. Would the file storing a whole game be as large (or nearly as large) as all of the turn files added together?

I've seen single turn files grow as large as 20 or 30 MB each. How large would a complete 120-turn game save be?

    Just add another terra drive.

  6. Will triggers do things like allowing reinforcements to enter the game?

Somethink like: If you get near the edge of a map could a reinforcement appear on the edge of the map. It would represent the neighboring (off map) battalion released a company to come to assist ? And this could be either the attacker or defender sends help.

This whole trigger thingy could make for some very exciting and complex battles.
