  1. To me it's not about AA and air strikes. I agree with a previous posters who reckon all that would happen off-map. However I would like to have AA assets that could be placed and used in ground attack/defense. I don't particularly mind if it's not 100% historical since it's a game. CMBN provides us with a sandbox and that's some of the fun for me.

Reminds me of a story that occurred after the landing in Normandy (going off memory here, so the details may not be exact). A German Tiger commander ordered an 88mm flak gun commander to engage enemy tanks instead of aircraft. The flak commander initially refused, telling the tanker that it wasn't his responsibility to target tanks. As the story goes, at this point the tank commander thrust his Luger in the flak commander's face and told him, 'you can either die here right now, or you can earn yourself a medal.' The man naturally complied. :D

  2. I just played this mission for the first time and was thoroughly drubbed by the AI (I was playing as Blue).

    *SPOILER*

Called a ceasefire, which shows that there are Syrian units in trenches all over the map, to say nothing of the ATGMs up on the woodlines.

So, what's the best way to approach this one? Use my mortars systematically on every trench line I can see?

  3. Don't you think it was just as risky sending the crew as it would have been sending a whole tank? Perhaps even MORE risky? If one crew member dies (the driver, for instance), the tank is more or less useless. And the crew are not bulletproof and only have pistols, whereas a tank has two machine guns and armor. If there had been infantry in those woods instead of just crew, you could have essentially lost a tank (by loss of the whole crew) to nothing more than a single American with a Thompson.

Well, if one of those crewman had had an MP40, things might have turned out slightly different. :D

  4. Judging by severe deep freeze, murderous headache despite pain meds, lit up back, intense sadness (not my own) and more, another devastating event is imminent. It will involve mass trauma and/or mass casualties. Wouldn't be surprised if it hit tomorrow. Don't know the where. Am also expecting a powerful eruption soon, based on extensive volcanic symptoms.

Give it a rest already. You are an empty-headed fool.

  5. It's wrong then. In the US Army they are called either Sergeant, First Sergeant, or Sergeant Major. Calling one "Sir" is a great way to start doing push-ups. ;)

I'll never forget the first day of boot camp, when one guy in my unit did the opposite and called a Major a Drill Sergeant. Yeah, that one didn't go over well. :D

To be technical, in the U.S. Army (and this is straight from official Army literature), sergeants up to the rank of Master Sergeant are addressed as either 'Sergeant' or the full title of their rank. First Sergeants are addressed as 'First Sergeant.' Sergeant Majors and Command Sergeant Majors may be addressed as either 'Sergeant Major' or the full title of their rank.

  6. What? I thought the CMSF jingle was suberb! It reminded me a bit of the music for Desert Combat mod for Battlefield...I have a soft spot for this contemporary-ethnic fusion music. It really conveys the feeling of young men in a foreign country in an intricate fashion. :D

I happened to like it as well, perhaps because I've been deployed to the Middle East.

  7. It wouldn't look right at all if we didn't include that bit of the strap since any picture of any Kar98k at the front would have that end piece there on the stock. Just because we don't simulate the strap itself is kinda irrelevant since either way it's "wrong". But the way it is now looks less "wrong".

    That's what I figured. Cool, thanks. :)

  8. Haha... slings... haha :D

If I were to make a list of 100 graphical improvements I'd like to get into Combat Mission at some point, I'd not put slings on there. On a list of 1000 graphical improvements? Possibly, though it would be towards the bottom. They are nearly impossible to do and have look even remotely OK, so why bother investing a significant chunk of development resources into something that would not look very convincing no matter what we did?

    Hey Steve,

Kind of a duplicate reply, because I didn't read your post before I posted one above:

The only reason I posted about slings was because, as that one in-game shot shows, part of the K98's sling is clearly visible. When compared to the rest of the model, it just doesn't look right and shouldn't be there.

I certainly didn't/don't expect you guys to model 3D slings in the game. Not my expectation at all.

  9. In CMSF it does seem as if the allied forces are akin to supermen - always obeying orders, fighting to the death. But, that may be a political issue since the game environment is too close for comfort to today's situation and in deference to the high % of mil profs. in this market.

It has nothing to do with military profits  and everything to do with morale, C2, and skill level.
