  1. This is a great scenario. I've been playing it standalone and it really demonstrates how much fun this game can be.
  2. Looks interesting but it doesn't mention price.
  3. Yes, thanks, I studied the unit page, hence the first post describing my attack on the Thor, emptying 20mm into its side repeatedly. Do turrets actually brew up faster? Are turret fronts more heavily armored than hull fronts? How about turret sides--same as hull side armor? I would aim for turrets more then, as I have often abandoned gun-killed enemies to their own devices. I remember mentioning in another thread that if you kill just the bot's turret, it is out of the game for a longer period of time than if you kill it outright.
  4. Much as I categorically despise Yurch for all the times he has killed me, it would be nice to read his thoughts.
  5. After playing the game since the public beta I am still having trouble killing things. I was just playing a standalone and with the Hermes pumped about half of my AP rounds into the side of a Thor at close range and didn't kill it. I'd read somewhere that it's good to aim for the sides of vehicles and turrets as that's where the batteries and ammo is kept. Other times I have cleanly hit Thors 3 or 4 times with my own Thor (HEAT), while they have hit me twice at long range and killed me. I have even tried practising killing my own bots, and I can't kill them in two shots with the 120mm from any angle with either round. I do know the benefits of each type of round and which scenarios to use them (I have no trouble racking up kills in the Gas Giant scenario with my Apollo 120 set to AP). In game, it seems my infantry's ATGs have no effect, while others kill my vehicles with their infantry with ease. Any advice would be welcome as I feel like a bit of a liability on line. I'm a veteran CM player--other than that this is the first game I have spent more than a couple of hours playing--I have no background in RTS or FPS (I have played both, this seems to be a bit of both). Note: this isn't in any way a critique of the game or the penetration modelling as many players clearly have no trouble racking up lots of kills against all types of vehicles. All I'm asking is, what do I need to know to do kill stuff better?
  6. Does anyone use a joystick for this game? Is it preferable to the keyboard?
  7. Apollo 120, Hermes and Hurricane, followed by Paladin 76 just because the gun sounds so cool. Although don't drop the Apollo 120 on even the slightest incline, it will roll like a dropped quarter in front of a vending machine. >:[ I killed 3 in a row the other night, first by a bad drop, second by rolling it on an incline, and the third after driving too close to a minefield. Suffice it to say my team mate was not impressed as that basically lost the game for us.
  8. Why not just downgrade the Hermes' armor slightly? As I see it, it would make more sense for it to have the abilities that it does and be as fast as the other Paladins, but with less armor. I do not think its AAD and EW abilities should be downgraded. It's pretty much the only vehicle that can defend itself against the Hurricane. The Hermes has its role just like the cutter or the Mercury IMHO. As for ATGMs, does anyone ever use them online, other than bots?
  9. I wonder if one will have to pay for it, a la CMSF modular add-ons. Not that I'd mind. Let's see...M10 versus Thor = Apollo vs Tiger.
  10. Fascinating, it fires a charge in the direction the ATGM is coming from, and explodes, killing the ATGM in the process. Simple and brutal. Thanks for mentioning it, I didn't know such a thing existed.
  11. Reading this thread reminded me of the Phalanx (designed to shoot down anti ship missiles). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS However--it's massive (scroll down to see the land based system). So fitting something similar into a tank that already has a 120mm gun, four crew members, is heavily armored and has a huge engine to drive all that weight...seems unrealistic to me. Just my two cents. edit: I forgot to mention, scroll down the Wikipedia page to see how massive the land based Phalanx is.
  12. Maybe they will release CMSF and the first WWII variant at the same time instead of staggering them...maybe that's why CMSF is taking so long.
  13. Drop Team has crashed numerous times since 1.1.0 was released. I have been sending the error reports but I thought I would post here just in case. It never seems to involve anything in particular, just crashes randomly on and offline, although not every time I play. I'm running Windows XP SP2, Pentium 4 2.86mhz, 1 Gig RAM, Nvidia GEForce 5200 128mb. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
  14. Pershotraneye Ridge or whatever. It's pretty balanced. That and anything else from the following website: http://bootsandtracks.com/ The scenarios tend to be pretty challenging but fair.
  15. Ok. Thanks for the explanation--I'm going to remove buddies until 1.1.0. I definitely appreciate the quick response.
  16. I loaded the game tonight only to find the game crashed. It took longer than normal to load, and when it came up there was just the usual menu but with a black background (instead of the cycling screenshots). I couldn't open any of the menus and had to manually abort. I tried three times to start the game with no luck, restarted my computer twice, but no result other than reaching the inaccesible menu and not being able to do anything. System info: Windows XP SP2, 1 meg RAM, Intel 4 2.8mhz, Nvidia GEforce 5200 128mb, been running beta and game for awhile with no trouble until tonight. edit: and today it started up with no issues, I joined a server and played for a couple minutes. Weird. [ July 19, 2006, 12:58 PM: Message edited by: konstantine ]
  17. Hi Holien, were the scenarios from this excellent tournament ever released to the public? Are they possibly available in a single download somewhere? I still think fondly of this tournament. One of the best I have ever been in, and I am a member at Band of Brothers--the tournament specialists. edit: for anyone who is interested, here is the link for the tournament (from early last year). 18. Wow some great follow up to what was really just a passing comment on my part. I was in fact always too close. I've read the manual three times but I guess the penetration modelling never sunk in--and here I've been playing Combat Mission for almost five years. Incidentally, if I kill a vehicle's turret in a Paladin (especially the fast 76mm, ion or 20mm non-Hermes) I rarely follow up and try for the kill. Less points for me in the end, but it actually means the bot is out of action for a longer period of time--he waits and then commits suicide, as opposed to dropping immediately after I waste time killing it. This comes in handy when attacking the base, as the bot is out of commission defending the flag for a few more valuable seconds.
  19. Funny, I get this with paladins all the time. I get the first shot (76mm) and multiple penetrations and my 20mm equipped opponent always wins.
  20. If you hit escape and look at the team listings, all of the bots have a star next to their name. I have had a couple of cases where human players didn't respond online to direct solicitation for input, though. :/
  21. Sorry if this has been done before, but I couldn't find anything in this forum or in the manual. How are end game player points calculated? Do turrets and sensors kills count as points? How about dropship kills? Does capturing facilities or blowing them up count as points? How about capturing the flag--or do you have to return it to your base to get player points? Just asking because I often see players with points in the triple digits and I'm wondering how they get that.
  22. I was playing on a team with someone tonight who I hadn't seen on the servers before, and he mentioned he was a liability because of his kill:deaths ratio. I just wanted to point out, if anyone is hesitant to play on the 1.02 servers because they are worried about not being good, it's actually a great atmosphere for new players (or just plain lousy players--I've been playing since the beta and I still suck). The better players often make suggestions, if not, I ask and they almost always answer. I am learning faster by mimicking their tactics (I don't have the time to learn on my own, so I figure why not learn online). As far as stats go, even the best players die 8, 12 even 17-18 times a game. The difference is the amount of kills of course--but things like dropping artillery or playing with a mortar vehicle makes a big difference in points. I just thought I would mention this if it helps to get more people on-line.
