  1. god i love canister. it's my favorite ammo type. i hate that my tc's seem to think its a good idea to shoot canister THROUGH my troops to get at the enemy.
  2. correct me if i'm mistaken, but is the 17 pdr much higher velocity than 76mm?
  3. Thanks, yanks. Invaluable advice. Interesting note tho : HTs hit in the rear by AT rifle fire don't often get hurt.
  4. does troop quality affect how easily a tank will bog?
  5. There is a battle in the CMAK guide scenario pack that deals with this. Basically you get a couple (one?) palttons of inf. and a 155mm spotter, with a VERY exposed Tiger sitting on a ridge. Since you are given no AT you must use arty to get rid of the cat. I dun think this one would work well as 2-player, but vs AI germans its fun little scenario
  6. Wow, yank, that is a good tactic, not only for SMG squads either. Have you tried it with any battle other than a night fight? Would the added LOS associated with daytime make this strategy unusable?
  7. Where's my unsung hero, the firefly? God i love them. As an Allied player, it is comforting to have a tank that can take on a cat frontally (though not recccomended to do that). And while the TDs like m10 and whatnot where used well IRL, in-game, they have no advantages over any but the most basic sherman. My big qualm with them is their light armor. Once i deal with armor, i like to pound krauts with tanks, but AT guns take out Tds easy easy.
  8. I have seen a few (too few) SCW scenarios on the Depot. They are fun, but too few are small scale. Are any of your SCW battles medium/small maps? I like the infantry-heavy fighting and light tank action of SCW, but i can't deal with the huge ones.
  9. Personally, in every game where i have soft skinned-vehicles, my first move for them is usually off map. they seem to die WAY too easy. I understand that theoretically small arms from 500m CAN take out a truck in trees, i just dunno if that would happen EVERY TIME. Off topic, does moving crap units (trucks, jeeps, crews, empty mortars/FOs) count against me at the end of the game? Would i be safer moving them to a corner but keeping them on-map?
  10. Kind of off the topic of SMG squads, but relevant to Assault move type. I recently played "HSG - 19 Medals for 19 Men" and performed my FIRST succesful smoke screen, using assualt to get my men over the bridge (mowing down a couple squads on the way). For newbs like me, give the smoke time. It takes a while to get everythying set up right before you can actually move your men.
  11. God, mike, it is hell. I'd like to think I've outgrown playing vs. AI, but i CANT play online. Although I will say, HSG has made some DAMN good small scenarios.
  12. What's so bad about his name? This may seem stupid but bear with. The only way "steiner" rings a bell is a Kampfgruppe CO, methinks in Bulge? Please help me as to why his tag is so bad
  13. Isn't Finland the country what gave us IKEA? Oh well, World's Wildest Police Videos is on. Apparently the craziest crimes in the world are drunk drivers running from cops in Alabama.
  14. Hmmm falcon, to me two companies with the armor like Mike said is about it. MAYBE my mind can handle the complicated movement commands, but i don't trust it. I get bored easily (yet another problem with youth, GOD DAMN US), even on the small maps. And as to learning new tactics by playin humans, it'll have to wait. My PC is what runs the CM series (it has no internet) and my mac is for internet. it is a torture i wouldn't inflict on anyone. Luckily im starting college next year so i will be buying a new comp. Speaking of which, I have a problem. I really want my new comp to be an apple laptop, but will they still be making all 3 games for mac at that time (august/sept of this year)? if not, i'll get a windows notebook. Yes i'm that committed to the game, no I haven't thought about how having them will screw me in college( in many ways)
  15. I'm pretty (but not very) sure that firing doesn't cause them to lose skis. Sneak and embark (once they have gotten on the vehicle) do for sure tho. Still, why do you want them to lose the skis? Does it affect firepower/cover/etc?
  16. How is the Ostfront a "sideshow" to Western Europe? God, us Americans are so damned selfish. First we declare any front that we didn't fight on is worthless, now we hate the UN. Save us from ourselves Europeans. PS a note on the sad state of the dollar: International drug dealers are now being caught with euros, nor greenbacks.
  17. Yes the American TACTIC might have been to shoot up anything that looked bad. However, that is hard to model in-game due to often comically low ammo. .50 cal anyone?
  18. Goodness, I am not even a wizened wargames grog, but I don't care much about the graphics. Graphics are the icing on the cakes....sorry, I think poppys has the best and most fitting pun, I lose.
  19. Well I was not, nor do i consider myself now, a typical wargamer. I AM an ardent student of history, particularly WWII, but have never enjoyed most wargames, since they are as a general rule, too complicated. CM is an in-depth, (for the most part) historically accurate wargame, but most importantly it remains a GAME. I can relax and play the game. Plus as ya ll have pointed out in this topic, and I have pointed out to my mother, the game is not exactly constructive, but it DOES excercise one's brain rather well.
  20. Yeah Falcon, that's how it is for us young'uns. Women our age don't like ANY video games. You have got to be underground with the stuff man.
  21. CSO, very good suggestions. However, I am steadfast in maintaining that any changes which complicate gameplay too much should be able to toggled on/off. The current level of complexity is already hard enough to handle as is.
  22. Thanks Folbec. After Christmas I'll get some games going.
  23. "Brothers in Arms", is this the game coming out in January based on the airborne part of Overlord? Yes, I'm anticipating that too. As to Redwolfs idea for plugging in your own AI, I am mixed. Obviously the game needs to get more detailed and complicated for grogs and introverts, but I like the relative simplicity of the games. An way to turn these uber-complicated options on and off would be nice. Then the detail would be only as much as each individual wanted. WE are at the point where the game will either compromise, or some people will not like it. CM has a pretty large following, with two basic camps. One is people obsessed with historical accuracy and the like, the other is people who just want a fun WWII strategy game with limited toughness.
  24. But some gamers, like me, DO NOT have internet access on the same comp as CM. Of course my status as a "dedicated gamer" is in jeopardy since I have yet to DL a single patch to AK.
