  1. That is a very good tip, thanks. Will engineers cut barbwire? Can they clear road blocks? Can they clear mines without demo-charges left in inv.?
  2. When an AFV crest a steep hill is it's belly armor exposed in the game? Or do you just hit the front? Also, when the AFV crest a steep hill it shouldn't be able to target things nor shoot if the target is too close.
  3. I think you'll find that the actual drop was substantially less grandiose than two divs + an independant bn + some brandenburgers. Did the Germans ever have the capability to lift 2+ divs at once? Regards JonS </font>
  4. You think the jagdpather is good....try the jagdtiger. I've never seen that sucker destroyed. It will usually get immobilized or run out of ammo, only after it destroys every moving vehicle on the map.
  5. I didn't even realize you could purchase them in platoons in CMBO. I haven't played a lot of QB but the times I have I didn't see any platoons only individual tanks. Was the QB pt value too small to see tank platoons or something?
  6. Ok, I understand now. Yes, the player forces the unaware unit to become aware. I think it would have been easy enough to design it so that the offending unit would simply ignore such targeting commands if it had no actual knowledge yet, just like when you try to area target a spot that the unit can not see.
  7. How do you get around the omniscient(sp) view pt? It would be very awkward for a player to see his flank about to collapse and not rush other reinforcements that in reality would not be aware of the enemy yet. Doesn't CM handle that situation by not allowing "borg targeting (los)", you know where the enemy is but your unit might not target until that unit actually spots it?
  8. That would be a very interesting game(?). Lets have all types of support and artillery present. That type of simulator would actually have intrinsic value to the military. Or it might just be a boring mouse clicking game, it would have to be done right. I think it would have been cool option in Panzer Elite. BTW, nice pics [ August 02, 2004, 04:06 PM: Message edited by: FM Paul Heinrik ]
  9. 500m is still a long way, you have to be an excellent shot to pick off guys hugging the ground. Anyhow, once the enemy infantry is in small arms range, the gun crew is about to be over runned and should think about leaving. In all likely hood the gun crew is not alone and would probably have other crews (MG, inf gun) over wathcing. Didn't crews have small arms too? If not issued they were certain to aquire some during the course of war.
  10. I don't want to ever find out but, supposedly if your able to get prone before the frag grenade goes off you can be fairly close to it, like within 12 ft. and walk away unharmed. Don't know what your ears will feel like. Concussion grenades are defensive and frags are offensive. You don't want to be using frag grenades while indoors. Did the US have concussion grenades in WW2? I've always just thought that 'nades thrown at fox holes were simply missing the foxhole and landing near it rendering the wounding effects minimal to the crew. Only once in a great while a good toss will actually land into the foxhole (and this I've never seen either). I mean think about it...it is kinda hard to throw a grenade 30+ yds into a 3-4ft wide hole in the ground regardless of incoming fire.
  11. At the start of a scenerio, I've hidden smaller avf in scattered trees and enemy avf did not spot them until I targeted them, which I don't think is realistic. Enemy infantry never seems to have a problem spotting avf regardless of your tanks status. Big afv are always spotted if in LOS. During a game hiding does nothing for afv that I've noticed, doesn't seem to help against air attack anymore than just being near some woods does. It seems best if you want to "hide" your afv to just keep them out of LOS of the enemy. I think a hull down tank should be (apparently not)just as hard to spot as an AT gun is.
  12. The Churchill VII is a bad boy too. I know the Firefly can dish it out but the Churchill can take some punishment.
  13. Got the book. It IS worth it. Besides having unit stats available for quick reference, it better explains the hq's command radius, morale effects, and experience lvs. The strategy part is rudimentary but it is always good to reread and reinforce basic military tactics. This book goes above and beyond the game manuel in presenting specific game features and what effects they have.
  14. Not possible. Captured troops become unarmed and can't recrew their weapons. They can, however, escape if they are not or only lightly guarded and some of their compatriots get close. </font>
  15. Is this just the 76.2mm on the T-34s or is it all 76.2mm guns vs the Stug IIIs? What about the Stug IV? It's armor is also 80mm right.
  16. Why do u think I'm participating in the conversation? To learn and express what I've seen. If it makes u feel good to try and belittle me go ahead, I'm a big boy. BTW, i did a search for stugs vs t-34s and guess what....it directed me to this thread, weird huh?
  17. If a AFV gets bogged it sometimes works itself free. If it becomes immobile, is it done for that scenario or can it also work itself free? If a tank main gun becomes "gun damaged" is it out for the duration of the scenario or is there a chance for it to get repaired during the fight? I played a QB inwhich I spent almost all my points on two Panthers. On the get go 1 Panther becomes immobile (adios) and the other had a 20mm aa damage it's main gun. Then it got ugly when the ai had 2 IS-2's hunting my platoon of riflemen.
  18. I do believe that I have captured a mg team, I then pushed on and then that same mg team returned and started manning their mg again. If I knew that I would have uh...executed them.
  19. Didn't realize that the Mig 15 was a British design, then was the US F-86 (Sabre) also of British design? I thought that the Mig 15 was copied from the F-86. These two planes fought pretty much evenly in Korea, correct? Soviet spies were busy.
  20. If you didn't know about the IR prototypes, you should look up some more stuff about what the Nazis came up with. Some of the stuff is truely amazing (and scary). It is not only military fighting stuff but some of the medical research such as organ transplants and tissue cloning. The end of the Nazi era set the stage for the technological advances by the USA and USSR. And it is no coincidence that both the USA and USSR split Germany down the middle and both countries ended up with jet fighter and spaceships shortly. Some countries are just now getting to that stage. Only if nazi germany was a good guy...think of all the advancements in society and technology we could have seen. Ususally you can find out about this stuff in books title "Secret weapons of Nazi Germany" or something similiar to that topic.
  21. Over the weekend I tried running some sims of stugs vs t-34/76 and 76 at guns. I found it difficult to test because the ai would ignore orders I gave sometimes. I actually never saw a stug g receive a pentrating hit durning this test. stug f 30+50mm was hit and penetrated and the crew bailed. stug f 30mm was hit and destroyed numerous times. Through out this test the russians couldn't shoot straight. They would miss almost all the time and the stugs would kill them. With no ammo the stug crews would bail on the 1st shoots fired. The t34s didn't look so impressive, but the 76 AT guns would actually hit the stugs and killed the stug fs. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a 76mm gun to kill a stug g, but it has happened to me, once during a critical pt in a fight, a 76 AT blew up my stug g and was the turning pt of that battle. I haven't played CM for a great length of time so I don't really know or see a big problem with the 76 modeling on the stug 30+50 front plate yet. I do see that if the problem exist that it could hinder the game, too bad, because it seems like an easy fix. I usually only play battles with under 700 pts so after buying a company of infantry a few support mortors and mgs I don't have a lot of pts for armor, mainly I can only afford early stug f or pz III or even barely a couple of pz II. Rarely am I able to purchase a pz iv d or e plus some other afv. I like to at least field 2 tanks. Sometimes I find that a couple of pz IIs are better than 1 pz III or stug f.
  22. I'm not experiencing the uber stugs you guys are. In my version of CMBB the t-34s seem to have little trouble taking out my stugs with frontal armor hits. Sometimes the shots ricocets sometimes they penetrate with no damage but most the time the shot penetrates and the crew bails. Very rarely do I end up in a shoot out at ranges above 800m most the time it is occuring at around 500-600m. I fair much better with Panthers than I do with stugs. For that matter I prefer pz IVs h-n over the stugs. The stugs seem to take a beating better but they can't kill the tougher Soviet stuff easily and they don't carry that much ammo. The stugs are just the easiest thing to buy, especially when I like to play in the 600-800 pt range. I have noticed a huge difference with the abilities of crack vs green troops. I think that a crack stug can easily destroy 6 green t-34s for no more reason than the crack crew will shoot only 6 times and hit while the green crew mill miss every shot. I had a single Tiger clean house numerous times and I've seen a single IS-2 eliminate 5 pz IVs with no problem.
  23. Can that cause a brush fire? What does it feel like to be behind a big gun going off? I imagine you "feel" the sound more that hear it. One time I was standing off to the side watching this guy shoot a big caliber rifle (.577 nitro) and it was as if a ghost took a telephone book and hit me in the face with it. The concussion was huge, now directly behind the shooter was ok, sound wise and concussion wise.
