  1. Can hand grenades (not the bundles but single grenades) take a tank out? When the grenade bundle is used can the inf. make a new one with the other grenades in inventory?
  2. I think I've seen it done. 2cm Flak in woods about 700 m away a KV1 comes into sight and is heading straight towards the Flak. KV closes to about 400 m, obviously doesn't see the Flak yet. I'm worried that it will get close enough to discover the Flak so I order it to open up at 300m. Flak hits, KV crew buttons up and starts to do the panic dance (driving forward and backwards) all the while the 2cm is just pounding the KV. The Flak doesn't damage tank or anything but on the 3rd turn crew pops out and starts running. I say I think I've seen this because after so many games of CM I tend to mix up memories, might have been a 3.7 cm Flak instead.
  3. ROQC looks neat, when I get home tonight I'm going to download rules and try it out. What is RL? VR? Thanks
  4. Cannon-fodder, I agree with your tactics. Using HTs in an offensive attack is just begging for them to turn into... well, cannon-fodder. I have had the most success using HTs in an assault role only when supported by armor on a min. of a 2 to 1 ratio. That's 2 tanks per 1 HT. But, in actuality the HTs are simply mopping up what the dismounted infantry and tanks routed. Normally, I think of and use HTs as if they were trucks that happen to have an MG on it. That MG is nice because HTs can return fire as they retreat which sometimes buy them enough time to get back into cover. Where as trucks simply get destroyed if hit by anything and has no chance at suppressing fire. So, I do not engage my HTs with the enemy and if spotted I try to pull them back quickly. At the same time, if they get themselves into trouble I do not go out of my way to protect them with other troops or divert overwatch to them. So basically, if my game plan works out my opponent will never see my HTs until he is routed and should morally be calling for a cease fire.
  5. That's funny. Soviet infantry: "Comrade the Facist has flanked us with a new monstrous tank, lets get out of here!" KV tank crew: "Why are all our infantry running away? We better get out of here too, lets bail out and run!"
  6. Vergeltungswaffe: Good explanation. I forget that "we" have hingsight and detailed armor books while in WW2 most tankers didn't know what the heck was going on. Could tank crews tell the difference between getting hit by a 20mm vs a 50mm shell or a grenade ect. Obviously they will know something big hit them if they see day light threw a 5" hole in the hull but does smaller shells make less noise hitting the hull vs bigger shells?
  7. Wow, now thats a bummer, extreme bad luck. That sounds like me. Your somebody i need to be playing against, someone who can at least match my own horrible luck. </font>
  8. AI cheats, anyhow. After a while playing the AI becomes "cookie-cutter" tactics and you will be able to beat the AI at it's own game, literally. Not just beat it but whoop it bad! Even a human player with very little understanding of the game mechanics of CM can provide a very tuff match. Just practice and you'll get better.
  9. I know this tactic works well in CM, this can even be accomplished with a 2cm Flak gun vs a green crew. But how realistic is it? I mean if I'm in a KV and a Pz II is playing scoot and shoot with me I'm not going to bail out just because the Pz keeps pinging me. To answer the question, just shoot the KV a lot from multiple angles and you might immobilize it, damage its gun, or have the crew abandon it. Worst case scenerio is that the KV detroys all your armor and rolls up slowly on you with Soviet submachine gun platoons supporting it. Hope you got some woods to hide in.
  10. Sorry, I didn't know where to post this. I'm looking for an old post that had a link to a pic showing a cut out piece of a British tank hull that was partially penetrated by a German shell. I did a search but do not remember what the subject was even about so my search guess proved fruitless. I think I saw it here maybe 3 or 4 months ago. Maybe someone remembers the topic header or the location of the pic? Thanks
  11. Know doubt!! I almost always lose my uber tanks to weak or disabling shots.
  12. Yes, you are right about that. Guderian, Manstien, Rommel read like they are all very nice grandpas that loved life and see the good in all things. Especially, Guderian (due to this topic I'm rereading my copy of Panzer Leader) I don't think he has a bad word for anyone, always referring to "that very nice French general" or "the honorable Polish soldiers". Yet, they all must have had a very dark side to them, as would anyone that would be successfull at the art of war. ....one day I'll get around to purchasing "Tigers in the Mud". Is there a book written by or about von Luck?
  13. That is a lot of downloading. I don't have cable modem so I bought the CDV version just to get all the cmmos mods. I wish there was one for CMAK.
  14. Unless they are right on top of him, try and hide. I think that you can still call in arty while hiding. If they ARE right on top of him you can start filling out the KIA report now. Anyway, more importantly I think you messed up somewhere along the way if your spotter is getting ambushed. You got him way to close to the front line action. If done right, your spotter won't be spotted until your side is being routed, and at that point it won't matter anyhow.
  15. A bunch of liberals. Why not ban anything that glorifies Nazi Germany. That would include this game because some people would find it distastefull that one would spend countless hours trying to lead a battalion of Heer to victory. And don't even try and separate Nazi germany from the antics of "the other Germany" during the 1930-40's. But, if you choose a nick like that you are going to draw allied players that can't help but try to beat you down (game wise).
  16. edited to say I don't why a double post appeared here so I deleted it. [ September 15, 2004, 07:10 AM: Message edited by: FM Paul Heinrik ]
  17. This is the best book on German tanks. "Encyclopedia Of German Tanks Of World War Two: The Complete Illustrated Dictionary of German Battle Tanks,Armoured Cars, Self-Propelled Guns and Semi-Track..." by Peter Chamberlain, Hilary Doyle Amazon.com has it for $20. There is another one for British and US armor but it is not as good. I don't know of a complete Soviet tanks book like these two. There are just different books on soviet T-34, KV-1, ect.
  18. "Panzer Leader" is more Guderian's memoirs of WW2 than tactical tank commanding, mainly describes his Korps lv operations with added color commentary. I don't remember anything in there that would help you with play in CM. With operational games yes, but CM no. Guderian's "Achtung Panzer" has more detail on how armored units should operate but still aimed at the Regimental and Divisional lvs. I too, am always on the look for good small unit tactic books. I hear "Tigers in the Mud" is a good one (next on the reading list). Also, a lot of books simply about tanks such as in Osprey's books have little tid-bits on tactical applications. Too bad M. Wittman didn't survive the war, he would have had some really good insight.
  19. I was wondering if there is a well detailed book about the roles and functions of the different military ranks. More specifically, I'm interested in German command positions. Ideally, I could be able to look up for example, "Major-General" and see an outline of his staff's positions and duties, ect. I'm interested in Nazi Germany, but any book on the subject would be fine as well. Thanks
  20. At what point does it cease being a grognard topic and simply turns into a nerd topic?
  21. I don't really remember much from my econometric studies, but isn't a standard deviation above 2-3% basically, means that the data sample is too small or that what is being hypothesised needs to be redefined. 20%+ is a huge standard deviation. Also, range estimation is an aquired skill, are the tests preformed using controlled testing or AARs? The more you estimate range the better you get at it, ask any hunter. In Vietnam there were reports of VC mortar crews consistantly hitting targets on their 1st shots (now they might have been infiltrating and pre-marking targets, I don't know). Regardless, I highly enjoy reading all the gronard info from Rexford.
  22. He is with the 2/26th Reg. right? Where is the rest of the 2/26th? Or was he attached to the 1/21st Reg. for this operation? I'm kinda confused by the diagram because the 6/26th is lining up with the 1/21st Reg. From the diagram, the 1/26th is to his right the 2/21st is to his left and behind (or with him) is the 1/21st. It seems odd that he is not near his battalion. Or is that 5th coy to his left also from the 26th reg.? I'm also assuming that the 21st reg. is the other inf. reg. attached to the 24th Pz Div. Did they have operational armor at this time? (I can look that all up when I get home.) If they handed me the orders I would have really fubar'ed it up
  23. JasonC, Very good "layman" explanation. I was kinda lost without some commentary on the when, what, why. Does the orders specify which company was Michael's? Does everyone agree with his assessment of the events at hand?
  24. This is true. With me, maybe 15% of the time I can put them to good use (get lucky?). When an ememy platoon is engaged in a fire fight with another platoon a lot of the time it won't see the FT guy closing but there is usually a 2nd enemy platoon that pops up and bears arms against the FT.
  25. I agree HE does work. A few times I thought it should/would have done more damage, but generally big calibre HE will send the infantry and the armor packing. How do you make a "tree burst" attack? Is it built into the modeling or do you command it?
