I was looking at some footage from operations and as far as I can tell US crews only carry a single rifle in their vehicles for commander use, why is it that all of the crew have M4s in CMSF?
-
I actually like that 'feature'; it adds to the fog of war. When it happens I usually consult the map.

I chalk up the missed spot to him hiding among the bodies (although he's standing).

I did a few test with turn corner ambushes. To represent the typical experience found in the game I set veteran WMIK and Javelin crews against a 12.7 HMG 7m away from a corner that both teams would go around. Of the 10 test the WMIK crew took out the MG 5 times, with the MG winning only 3 of the exchanges (with casualties) the remaining 2 were equally bloody and both sides were forced to withdraw. Even with the overwhelming advantage of firing first in all cases the MG lost because it lacked sweeping fire and was still firing in bursts. Also even with regular experience and high motivation the Syrians are tragically poor shots in 1 instance they couldn't kill a pinned Javeline gunner in the open at 4 meters with: grenades, HMG fire, and the A-Gunners AK. This could be a fluke however this reflects how terribly useless it seems the Syrian regulars are in ideal circumstances.

Inf. riding on tanks in Normandy?

We also got rid of the swan-diving bail outs so I suspect there'll be a decent effort by BFC. -
Artillery effectiveness - Vehicles this time!

120MM mortar has destroyed T72TURMS and 60mm have destroyed BMP3s. -
Artillery Effectiveness against Units in Buildings

I think we can tweak some options we already have where selecting "armour" causes a deep impact, "general" causes point detonation, "personnel" causes airburst. -

In that case I do a small area target that clips the edge of the building. If that fails you'll need to find a way to gain LOS. -
I don't think a lot of those vehicles would be useful for more than maybe a handful of battles (not enough for a full game). DUKW and DD Shermans probably faded into obscurity or were damaged/replaced and would be little more than a novelty.

I suppose this is more of a real life question, but why wasn't the Abrams 120mm armed at least a token supply of HE ammo, they've created some other anti-personnel ammo it seems odd they would skip the most basic form.

The armor brings in a tighter shot grouping. If on general the FO may call for fire for effect within say, 75m, where 'armor' will be corrected to within 25m or so. There's no evidence that armor causes any different fuse settings or ammo settings in my testing. Linear is where you pick 2 points and the artillery will spread the shots between the two so you can walk rounds up an entire trench causing all sorts of pain and anguish. You can use 81 mortars against armor but mortars are only effective against stationary armor and it may cost you a few rounds unless you move up to 120s. It's a good way of finishing off an m-kill. Point targeting a unit will also cause the artillery to 'chase' them provided the FO has continuous LOS. Hope that helps, nice videos.

I've found lately there's an issue with gunners making odd/silly ammo choices. For example T72 confronts a truck or Hummer and fires and AP round. Not a good choice. Also SPG-9s which are so far the only field piece represented in the game make outright stupid decisions, firing a tandem warhead at a truck when HE available is plain wrong. These issues aren't too big in CMSF but if they manage to get into Normandy watching my 17pdr fire it's only Tungsten shell at a Kubelwagen may get a little depressing.
-
Just to add on, I would have taken the Hummers and charged the UAZ. Closing in will exploit their lack of armor, if they dismount they'll be killed getting out and an easy win on your left flank at least.

Another complain about Syrian AT assets
Gen. J-sun replied to TempV's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
I believe when the SPG-9 was mentioned last the BFC opinion of the time was that it was correct for a transport SPG-9 which would be broken down into 2 barrels (I think) a tripod, sight, ammo prep. Although sources listed the set up time as ~2 minutes it was believed that this was under a fire drill. At least thats what I remember. -
Remarkable videos from 4/25 ABCT in Afghanistan:

I live in an area where AH64 routinely fly by. At about 2 miles away 1000' agl they're about as loud as car driving away from a distance. Or a more reliable example a loud TV in another room. -

I notice the US soldiers turned up much brighter in the Apache sights, is this deliberetly done by some sort of identifier or are my eyes playing with me? -
The USMC going to Town scenario. I recently hot-seated and retrained the BMP, both with and without pausing the Javelins suffered from a lower than usual hit rate in one case taking 3 Javs to take out a BPM in the open. In most cases the missle does not fail, it hits the mark going through the vehicle without causing a scratch. I haven't attempted to replicate it with the British scenario in the demo however my passive observation is that their Javs function normally.
-
I own previous patches of CMSF. Howeve in the 1.20 demo I noticed Javelins have a problem hitting a target in RT play. They hit the ground directly under the target vehicle which does no damage whatsoever. With the limited tests I was able to do it seems the under hit is caused if you pause at any time between when the operator takes aim and impact.

I thought this was cool to share, I just check LOS for a disembark move on an MG and it claimed to be hull down. I imagine that means if they stand they can see but can't see prone.

Tanks using MGs against other tanks.
Gen. J-sun replied to Kat Johnston's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
Inside of about 500m the tanks fire the Heavy MG to attack the optics or score a lucky hit on the gun barrel (ok, fat chance). -
Apache rocket attack....wicked sniper of the gods
Gen. J-sun replied to Lethaface's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
The Apache fires HEDP and HEI rounds and they are in an integrated belt in typical machine-gun fashion. -
Just Wondering...why Syria and not Iran?
Gen. J-sun replied to saunders1953's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
Safety Pin, keeps the fuse from compressing and setting of the charge. -
Sounds good to me guys, I just thought with the proliferation of top-attack AT weapons that modern tanks would have developed thicker armor in that area. Also the M120 fires precision munitions in addition to DPICM rounds.
-
I can't believe it. I just tested that and I was knocking out tanks with 120mm mortars, that seems wrong...is it?
