C2 issue: static assets
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I can see that one confusion surrounds what does it even mean to be "in C2". Clearly, one literal meaning is "receiving and sending communication up the line". In no way am I arguing that an HMG or an ATG positioned on defense can do this if they can't see/hear their commander. It's fine that their potting/intelligence is reduced. However, in CMBN, being "in C2" has a dramatic effect on the effectiveness of the unit. It is this aspect that I find frustrating on defense. A series of HMG or ATG placed in a defensive setup _know_ that their other companions are there, they know what the plan is etc. It seems to me that they shouldn't be suffering the same brittleness as some unit that lost sight of his friendlies in the heat of battle. C2 issue: static assets
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I agree that isolated men won't fight as well in combat. My "complaint" is that these assets aren't isolated. They know that they are part of a solid defense. The commander and the other defensive assets are just nearby in known hidden locations, everyone knows their role. The commander only just positioned them, hyped them up, gave them their orders. They aren't "out of C2", they just don't happen to be able to see the commander for a moment... GaJ -
I just wonder whether the presence of the foxhole in a house is a bug that will cause wierdness... I'd hate to be relying on these apparently well concealed foxholes and find they aren't worth squat

Gaps in bocage: there have to be some, right?
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in CM Normandy Maps and Mods
Of course, the question I'm looking for the answer to is "how big is a proper gap". I thought, but maybe mistakenly, that every field should surely have a gap that a truck can go through. Am I mistaken in thinking that trucks can't go through those narrow looking gaps? The ones that "a person or a horse" can go through? Surely farmers needed not only horses, but also ploughs to go into fields? I'm happy to be educated otherwise ... it just seems wierd to me at the moment! GaJ -
So... I'm finding that it's a real hassle to deploy semi-static assets such as HMG and ATG in defensive positions in C2. It seems unrealistic to me to think that every HMG/gun that a commander placed in a defensive formation would be visible to him. Shouldn't it be the case that a static asset at the beginning of the game is "effectively" in C2, because the commander positioned it there and gave it it's orders? Sure, if it moves, then all bets are off. But it just seems such a massive limitation that every defensive asset has to be clustered in LOS of a commander in order to be effective... GaJ

I see that I can put foxholes in houses. (At least, halfway, two holes in and two out). Can I expect this to work in a sensible way? Or is it actually a bug? I think "sensible way" means that the guy in the foxhole in the house benefits at least as well as if he were in a foxhole out in the open... Thx, GaJ

H2HH 1.4.6 available in the H2HH Dropbox
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Hmm - it's actually a little bit tricky. I've put it "on the list", but it's not an instant fix thing GaJ -

Hmm - it hadn't occured to me that the chat window should stay open - it possibly can, I'll have a look at that. -

Use Fraps to take screenies. As you'v found, windows screen grab doesn't work. GaJ -

Commonweath module: game improvements?

There are mods for that.... -
I experience the same general frustration: lines that look like they should give LOS often don't. One thing I've found in particular is that it seems like the LOS for an inf unit is always from the guy who's standing behind a tree. So you plot an inf unit to move to a place where there is plenty of LOS to another place, but when the guys get there none of them are willing to take a look - they all (according to the LOS tool) must be standing behind trees. An opposite bad problem happens for mortars. They will report that they can see, from where they are standing in light forest, to a place, but when it comes time for the turn, they decide that they can't see afterall, and do a little dance apparently trying to arrange themselves so that they _can_ see the thing they took an order to fire at... but every time the music stops and they sit down, the unit apparently can't see the target... Frustrating Learning Curve
GreenAsJade replied to Heliodorus's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
CMBN does have massive and frustrating learning curve. The best thing I can suggest, reading the OP's post, is to hunt down the threads that have info about the cover value of buildings: there are movies showing bullets fired at walls etc. Once you've seen those, your outlook on what cover buildings _should_ provide will likely be different, and you will largely ignore houses as anything other than a piece of cardboard that blocks LOS... this will reduce one frustration at least... Commonweath module: game improvements?
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Ah - I missed this completely. I don't have to pay anything to get the updates to CMBN that coincide with Commonwealth module? In that case, of course I'm happy to wait GaJ -
Commonweath module: game improvements?

Yes, in some parallel universe where BFC doesn't update the base game with each module. GaJ -
Commonweath module: game improvements?
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Heh heh I didn't mean to stir up the "keep us informed" debate, though I suppose that was inevitable. It's less clear to me why BFC wouldn't tell us what we're buying when it's time to order though. Maybe this list will come at actual release, just not pre-order. GaJ -
Commonweath module: game improvements?
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I could have sworn there was a post a while back from Steve saying that during the development of Commonwealth they had a focus on improving the UI. I know that there are no new engine features, that's a given. It's not as if that is the only thing that could be improved though GaJ -
H2HH 1.4.6 available in the H2HH Dropbox
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I'm happy to look at adding any other game support. A fundamental thing will be "is there a separate folder for each of incoming and outgoing turns, and are the turn files numbered in increasing order". If the answer can be "yes", then H2HH can support the game, I think. GaJ
