2.
quote:
Originally posted by SpazManOught: Do these hackers realy exist? Has any home user been hacked? not just recieved some lame VBA virus as an attachment.

No, no, no! The Germans will newer attack us. We are friends. We even divided up Poland together... Hey what are those tanks doing here? A little paranoia is healthy.

Best regard von Schalburg

I must admit that I don't really understand how this works but I don't think it solves the problem: a game between 2 players behind firewalls. If it does please enlighten me...
 4. Why does ESC minimize the game? Is this standard in Mac? I think that it would be more intuitive to cancel a command in the game or return to previous screen in the setup. As it is now I press it by mistake (and habit) and it is annoying...
 5. Are there any plans to create a server dedicated for CM TCP/IP games? I am thinking of something similar to the GameSpy or MSN Gaming Zone. The reason I would like one is to help players behind firewalls that don't give out an accessible IP addresses to play. If you are behind this firewall you can’t create a game on your computer, you can only join someone else. And what if both you and your friend (enemy) are behind firewalls? Another good thing would be the possibility to see all players currently waiting for a game to play, a chat function and maybe some ranking and or game result database also?

 7. Wow, reading this thread makes me very impressed. The fact that BTS take the time to read and answer questions about a game in progress is outstanding. Keep up the good work!
 8. Why should the army have all the fun? I want a "highly modded CM, one that can handle modern warfare"!!! Take the army's money and give us the game! Please.
 9. I disagree with the statement that the battles last shorter because players don’t care about losses. A lot probably don’t (I didn’t used to) but even if you play “carefully” the game is faster. The C&C definitely speeds things up and eliminates much of the hesitation and uncertainness that plague a “real” battlefield. But in a “real” war a commander would most likely engage the enemy at a larger distance by shelling him from tanks and guns instead of storming with infantry which I feel you are forced to in CM by limited time and ammunition. The tactic used by the allies during the Normandy campaign to hold and call for air/artillery support when in trouble is, in my opinion, not included in CM where air support is (by necessity) more simplified and ammunition and time is shortened. I think that the game is designed to be both fun to play and realistic. The enemy is more equal to your forces than in most “real” attacks and the game is shorter so it doesn’t get boring. ------- Waiting for a battlefield command in CMMC
 10. I gather that the allies didn’t use so much axis equipment. But what happened to it then? There must have been huge piles of scrapped guns/tanks in France.
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by tero: In the most strict sense of the word we "lost" both tries.

Yes, but I don't want to rub it in I am, of course, only joking. I think that the Finnish effort during the winter war was truly heroic and I can understand that they joined forces with Germany in ’41 for a chance to get even. 12. Well, you lost the first try, didn't you!
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by Gyrene: No real harm is meant by any of it, matter of fact Finns can take a joke much better than either Americans or Australians, we could learn a thing or two from you guys.

Yes, normaly they wait for 10 seconds before they cut you with their knife... And I think that the ûberfinn thread started around 1941 or so [ 01-16-2002: Message edited by: Swift ]

 14. While playing CM I started to think about what happens with all the destroyed and abandoned units. Every battle that results in one part taking terrain would result in a chance of capturing enemy equipment. A standard CM battle leaves several vehicles and guns left on the battleground.I would think that much of this could be repaired and reused by the capturer. I have read about Russians and Germans using each others tanks and guns on the east front but I haven’t seen anything about this on the west front. Did the Allies use German equipment (and vice versa) and to what extent? If not reused what did they do with all the captured equipment?
 15. I looked on the net for pictures of pillboxes and found this I would imagine that if a 40mm shell managed to hit the hole in the middle it would most likely hit the main gun and if so I assume that it would have enough power to destroy it but a .50 cal round might not. Here a AP round would give more effect than a HE. Now the pillbox in CM is pictured with a broad firing slit so if this is how the pillbox is designed it would give the gun a larger hit chance. A larger gun might not have the same precision as a 40mm and might not be able to hit the firing slit. 16. I just played a TCP/IP game that hung while receiving the file the same turn a squad surrendered. My opponent (on whose computer the game was calculated) had no trouble seeing the movie and save the turn afterwards. We restarted and I killed the captured crew (using area fire) and the game could be continued normally. This could be unrelated to the killed squad and the game hung several times more but the thing that started it could have been the surrendering quad. Now, by this and what I have read surrendering units are a major problem with TCP/IP games. My suggestion is to make a quick (if that is possible) optional fix or patch that either kills units before they surrender or if that is not possible just prevent them from surrendering altogether. This would at least answer the question whether surrendering units has anything to do with the problem. I now that there are not supposed to be any patches to CMBO and definitely not before CMBB is finished but in my mind the suggested fix is quite easy to make (please don’t hit me Charles ) and I could wait one or two days longer for CMBB if I could play CMBO in the mean time...
 17. While reading several threads with tactics on how to deal with bunkers I think I have one thing to add. I learned the hard way that the 40mm Bofors AA gun is a bunkers worst nightmare. I placed a 76mm bunker with a good over watch position fully visible on top a mountain to, in my mind, wreck havoc on my foe. He had placed 2 Bofors guns to destroy some buildings (another task they perform excellently) but they immediately opened fire on my bunker and destroyed it in 47s... I was steaming mad. The next time we played I got my revenge. My opponent had done the same thing I had (using an 88 instead). I had learn my lesson and bought 2 40mm’s. The joy I felt when the bunker was destroyed after less then a minute erased all my previous grief (and made me overly bald and ended up in me loosing 3 of my tanks to well placed shreks  ) So to sum up: Bunker + Bofors = Disaster (for the bunker) [ 01-11-2002: Message edited by: Swift ]

 18. I'm suffering from the same problems that several people seam to have with the game freezing and aborting after receiving some TCP/IP game turns. I usually run my PC over a crossed etherlink cable against a Mac. My question is whether other programs that send information over the TCP/IP protocol could interfere and cause this problem (or some of it)? I mean programs that check for mail or adjust the clock via an internet server.
 19. I forgot about Neverwinter Nights... it also could be a reason to upgrade my computer.
 20. I have ordered a P4 2GHz with a GeForce 3 Ti500 card and 500Mb RAM... Hopefully this will do the job I'm amazed that anybody could write "I just upgraded my PC to Linux, so I guess I won't be playing CM for a while". There should be a law against that sort of thing.
 21. I think that the game works pretty well as it is but one way to model a limited communication could be to have the player seeing all units (absolute spotting) but the individual units only having information about enemy’s (and friendly’s if it effects morale) that they can see. If the player selects a unit all the enemy (and friendly) units not spotted by that unit could be transparent indicating that you as the player know about them but the unit does not. If a fire order was given against a transparent unit it would result in an area fire (until the unit spots the enemy). This idea might not be possible to implement due to the limitations of current computers but it would be one step towards solving the problem if it is.
 22. FAS have a nice picture showing the AP capabilities of the M2. They state that the latest .50 cal AP ammunition is a .30 cal tungsten penetrator in a .50 cal sabot round. The Swedish army uses the .50 cal semi-automatic weapon that is manufactured by Browning (US Army calls it M82A1A) and shoots armour piercing high explosive incendiary ammunition. If anyone is interested there is a RealPlayer film about the M82 and the ammunition: 50cal56k.ram
quote:
Originally posted by Hanns: Hell, you can buy the things legally in the US as a civilian. 23.
quote:
Originally posted by Gyrene: Swift, you should only need to forward port 7023 if you are behind a firewall (Software or hardware) and it's not something you ISP handles. (I.e. no router) Gyrene

I am behind a firewall that my ISP have put up. I am connected on a LAN to my university and they have restricted almost all ports (at least all incomming connections).. I have a local IP number 10.xx.xx.xx and all students share the same external IP number (a proxy). I can use filesharing software but only in passive mode. Is there any chance that i can play CM on the internet?
