Well, to my knowledge the Region shouldn't make much of a difference. A Town or Village map in the North could look like any in the South. After all, the type of map is selectable and changeable.

Rivers don't appear in Quick Battles. Do you mean the North, Central, South, Finland setting for Region? I think it mostly relates to force availabilty.
