  1. Bummer! I live in Sydney and have never heard of 'Electronic Boutique' stores. Maybe Melbourne is a better place than Sydney after all!! Peter
  2. Being a newbie I would really benefit from something like this, so go for it guys. Thanks
  3. Blue streak would you be kind enough to tell me in which store you found these gems -- so I can sneak out and buy myself an early Xmas present. Thanking in advance
  4. Dooh! I never knew that grognard was a real word and did a quick google on it. The following seems to answer the question. URL:http://www.alanemrich.com/Writing_Archive_pages/grognard.htm The Origin of the Wargaming Term "Grognard" The Limits of your Vocabulary are the Limits of your World Courtesy of Alan Emrich We frequently bandy about the term "grognard" among our fellow wargaming hobbiests. Often, online and in print publications, people have speculated about the origin of this label for veteran wargamers -- who coined this term that has been adopted as part of our hobby's lexicon, how did it get popular, and what is its root meaning? Allow me to present the real story, as told by the Dean of Board Wargaming himself, Jim Dunnigan: "The term 'grognard,' as applied to veteran wargamers, was first coined back in the early 1970's by John Young. He was, at that time, an employee for [the board] wargame publisher SPI, and the use of the term around the office (and among the local play testers) soon led to 'grognards' being mentioned in one of SPI's magazines (Strategy & Tactics). Several hundred thousand board wargamers picked up the term from that publication and it spread to computer wargamers, as the the board wargamers (the ones with PCs, of course) were the first people to snap up computer wargames when they appeared. "Consider this a first hand account, not an urban legend. I actually heard John Young utter it the first time and was one of the people who razzed him about it for some time thereafter. I was also the one who actually put the term into circulation in Strategy & Tactics [during my tenure there as Editor]. "Alas, John Young passed away in 1976 (or was it 77?). I can confirm that also; I was at the funeral. Now you know. . ." -- Jim Dunnigan Grognard: a soldier of Napoleons' Old Guard; a veteran soldier; grumbler (French) - Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd ed Grognard: (slang) an experienced wargamer - John Young, Strategy & Tactics magazine
  5. Please excuse my ignorance guys but what does this word actually mean and where does it come from. Thanking in advance Peter P.S the other acronym that escapes me is AFV
  6. A quick question for the gurus. On average how many times do you replay a scenario? I find myself replaying some of my favourites up to a dozen times, try new variations etc. But I wonder whether this is a good way to learn since I know roughly what the oppositon is. Looking forward to your thoughts Peter
  7. Thank you for the info guys. It is much appreciated. I think that this forum is pretty amazing and that dumb asses like me are tolerated. Elsewhere I would have got shredded to pieces.
  8. Please forgive me for asking a really stupid question but my game manual has disappeared in a recent move Could someone plese explain to me the significance of the yellow lines during the Action Replay? Does this represent the enemy units that are actually firing on my units or that have LOS? Thanking in advance Regards Peter
  9. Great stuff guys. It is like if a lamp was turned on in a dark room. Your time and effort is much appreciated. Regards Peter
  10. I would be grateful if someone could point me in the direction which would help me to understand the structure of an army. I understand the concept of a squad, platoon and company but get lost on the concept of regiment, batallion, division etc. Do the brits and yankies use the same terms? Any help would be greately appreciated
  11. Hi there everyone. A quick question. What magnification do you play on when giving orders? I find that anything more than 2 makes it really hard to get a sense of the contours of the battle field but at the same time the field of view is very narrow. Looking forward to your thoughts Peter
  12. Hi there everyone This is probably not a CM related issue as it happens in some other games. Whenever I start the game up I loose my internet connection and the computer starts making a beep-beep noise. Very annoying! The game however plays just fine.....(and I do love it). Any suggestions would be welcome Thanking in advance Peter
