1. night fights are the only way to go: reduced visibility is the great leveller. your uber tanks can't just sit in a corner popping at everything in sight, for one thing. short range fire power is at a premium, and heavy armour is mitigated considerably (man-portable AT kit is extremely effective at night). Artillery is still useful (as is smoke) but you'll generally have to drop it blind. night also opens the floodgates for psych warfare: a few teams and lmgs look the same as or 3 platoons from even a short distance; an armour sound contact can be a KT or a kubelwagen. plus, have you noticed how innacurate the actual location of the contact is? you can much more easily mount an effective monile defence at night. i'd say, at night make lots of diversions: give him sound contacts which mislead. move around a lot, even if you're defending. if its a big map, try a flanking probe well away from the main action. if he hasn't covered any "blank areas" of the map with a picket, you might be able to get behind him. if you're attacking, sneak your main attack as far up as possible, hiding any vehicles periodically to blank them out. if you really want true FoW, try night/thick fog: visibility down to 50m and sound contacts all over the shop. a final point is, if you're playing hotseat or tcp in the same room with the speakers on, use the 'button up' command repeatedly for each tank. initially this creates the illusion of a massive and twitchy tank armada, but after a while it just annoys the crap out of him thus making him prone to errors of judgement
2.
quote:
Hey Duke, since you know SenorBeef will be sending in his purchases tonight, any chance you could send out the rest of the games now? That way those of us in Europe could do the all-important setup before going to bed --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

would be very handy as Gyrene and i have scheduled a tcp sesh for tomorrow afternoon (thats 'Yesterday Evening' in PST, I believe).
3. I had a game where I was pinging a churchill on the front and causing internal armour flaking twice or thrice a turn for several turns. this seemed to have no impact on the crew whatsoever. i can only assume that an 'armour flaking' initial result on a shot then triggers a further percentage chance of injuring a crewman (which then might shock or force a bail-out) but that i was unlucky. just a point, but how can i see whats going on INSIDE an enemy tank 500m away?
4. sent my purchases last night , Duke. however i'm having to use icq mail to send at the moment and it didn't look too happy with the file. let me know if it was corrupt and i'll resend.
5. I think they're quite handy defensively if you can buy them at Vet or above as they tend to get a good few tungsten rounds. Use them for ambushing at long range, get a few shots off then nip off to another spot. Don't get too attatched to it, but if used carefully it can at least make your opponent twitchy. BTW ,and I'm going to have to go home and check this, but... IIRC the Archer was not the only WW2 (or thereabouts) AFV with, for whatever godforsaken reason, a fixed rear-firing main armament. Anybody any ideas as to nationality, model, etc?
6. I'm more than willing to contribute: scenarios and articles. I'm a graduate in history with a deep and abiding passion for all things ww2. I've got a couple of articles already html'd-up from my abortive website project, plus a couple of scenarios.
7. Mine and Gyrene's appears to be a heavily forested meteorite impact crater with steep, near vertical sides and a church bang in the middle. freaky!
8. sorry for the delay, guys, but i can't get in touch with Philistine. Duke's said that if he hasn't shown by sunday (ie, today), then i win by default. a rather ignominious way of getting to the second round i admit, but hey...... Duke, its 1300hrs here, still no sign of the chap
9. a mate of mine has a geforce and doesn't get the fog effect, if thats any help..........
10. Isn't Chandler the current Prime Minister of the United States? Or is that Frazier? I can never work out who you guys have for a Royal Family. We have The Beckhams.
11. Philistine, if you're reading this, WHERE THE BLINKIN' FLIP ARE YOU?
12. easy-peasy. before giving any orders (ie, run the vid first if nec)press the save hotkeys (CTRL(?)+S), you're then asked how you want to save, as TCP/PBEM/Hotseat/whatever. away you go.
13. probably the ai doesn't use them too well. check out the purchase points: they're cheap, they pack a punch, and if you buy vets they might get a few shaped charges in there as well. use them for recce and supporting assaults(surpressing defending inf). In effect use them as semi-disposable assault guns. The big point is that you buy them from the "vehicles" pool, not the "armour" one. The allies haven't got anything like them. 75mm/20mm HT's? I love 'em!!
14. there were still active Ukrainian partisan groups in 1952, when Soviet Ministry of the Interior troops finally dealt with the problem by mounting a campaign of extermination against them, supported by armour, aircraft and artillery. I personally would be very wary of taking any Soviet statistics/information at face value.
15. We think the Capricorn problem is a bug in Windows2000, but we're not sure. Spawney Git was lifted from "Viz". Sorry.
16. A quick scan of the threads in this forum will convince even the most obtuse that the average grog's biggest whinge about CM is not the bugs, ommissions or percieved inaccuracies;but the vagaries and whimisicalities of good ol' Dame Fortune,Lady Luck herself! Stories abound of fluke kills, amazing accuracy at unprecedented ranges and battles turning on a single anomalous happenstance. I am proud therefore to announce, in conjunction with Mystic Meg and Old Moore's Almanac, the imminent arrival of the beta Version of "boy_Recon's Mystical Luck Mod". Install this on your pc and, via the easy-to-use interface, you are able to select a pre-battle "luck rating" on a spectrum from 'Snowball In Hell' to 'Jammy' and 'Spawney Git'. Imagine it, my friends! No longer need you report your tales of woe of Churchills killed by Kubelwagens, or KT's immobilised by a carelessly discarded coke bottle. From now on, comrades, you can be masters of your own destiny! You want phenomenal accuracy? Its yours!! Invulnerability? You got it, buster!!The serenity and security of knowing that you're always going to win? Yours at the flick of a switch, with boy_Recon's Mystical Luck Mod!!!Out Soon!!!! Only problem is, we can't get the beta version to work for Capricorns.
17. For my money, I've yet to see the humble Hetzer bettered as a purchase. At 102 points for a veteran you get speed, reasonable armour and gun, plus decent mg firepower. Add a couple of 20mm and 75mm hts into the mix and you've got a potent mobile strike force. Just remember to protect the hetzer's flanks, they're made of cardboard.
18. Duke, if i can get hold of philistine this w/e we'll sort a tcp/ip session out, otherwise we could be a little late..........
19. thats nothing. I can only perambulate around my home town by imagining lines and waypoints: "50m Fast move down the High St, Pause for 15 seconds, Sneak into the off-licence, Hunt for the cheap lager deals...etc etc" Quality Time with the wife becomes a real nightmare
20. Very handy site already, Stix. 'Content is king': don't worry about bells and whistles. Go for information: its nice to have the rules instantly available rather than having to trawl through the thread. If you want a hand, drop me a line.
21. ah, look, things aren't THAT bad. We're getting the Italians and the Poles. Count your blessings. I'm still waiting for a decent 3D Napoleonic game. With horses.
22. I can see your point Gen, from a lab-test type perspective. Try setting up one side only in a night/thick fog scenario and you might get enough friendly fire's to qualify as a blue on blue scenario.
23. ...or indeed a Bersaglieri bicycle company to the banks of the Volga.... Point taken, but there's only so much space on the cd.
24. I think you could "sort of" do a quick operation if you get a third party to randomly generate one via the scenario builder.
