1. as the Axis, vet smgs and vet Hetzer's plus a few frills and flim-flams depending on how i feel. hetzers are probably the best value for money going. SMG squads have poor long range fire power, but when do you ever get into an inf fire fight over 200m? As the allies, the Churchill VIII/Wasp/Airborne combo works pretty well. All vets again as the Churchill doesn't get tungsten on reg. keep the wasps well back until you know where the enemy is. Gamey as hell, but it works for me.
2. broadly speaking the higher the res, the more map area you can see on screen. bigger res means less tarting about when you want to see something on the other edge of the map
3. Try "Operation Flashpoint", you get sneakage, squad level combat from a FPS perspective; you can fly aircraft, drive tanks, command your squad. you can even play co-op or death-match stylee with your chums. CM hasn't been out of my CD drive since i got it last year, but now it's neck and neck with Opflash.
4. I recently purchased one of the above graphics cards and, whilst it has rejuvenated Quake and Unreal beyond measure, CM is totally shagged: the unit information data is scrambled, as is most other non-fixed text. it is just about legible at the lowest res, but this is a nightmare to play on. i've deleted the prefs file, which is how i got to change the res. any other suggestions?

7. apologies to all and sundry . mine and Gyrene's game is nearly up. i think the last week has been "difficult" for both of us for a variety of non-specific reasons. I'm sure whichever of us makes it through to the next round will make that residual Kubelwagen/50mm mortar/assualt boat set-up sing like an angel. BTW, anybody played Operation Flashpoint yet?
8.
quote:
no Brit says "bloody f--king hell" ! It's bloody hell or f--king hell not the two together. I don't normally teach swearing

Wrong, wrong, wrong. "bloody f--king hell" is perfectly acceptable and not at all unusual. Stringing expletives together is, in fact, a minor art form. Remember "bloody b*ggering hell" from an episode of 'Absolutely Fabulous'? For Brit wav files i'd like to suggest, in no particular order: "Run-arahnd.........NAH!!" "Yew plonkah, Rodney" "We'rrre doomed. Aye, we'rrre doomed" If someone can tell me the technicalities of getting a wav file into CM, I'll glady have a bash.
9. Apologies for the presumption, Duke. I must have missed the vital "vote now IF YOU'VE WON" clause. Thats what comes of not reading the threads closely
10. Player picks. The maps are Duke's responsibility. My forces are my own.
11. the Chindits (Burmese for "bandit") operated from about 1942-1944. It's a loose term as at various times SAS, Glider Troops, and Territorial Army battalions were deployed under Orde Wingate's command in Burma. They had pretty much the standard infantry kit for that period: LMG, Bren, Vickers, Sten and Thompson, 2" mortar. They weren't that diferently equipped except the arms were trimed down a little for jungle fighting: there's a cut-down Lee Enfield for example.
12. Hey Gyrene, don't panic!! sent a turn back to you last night, will try and get any return sorted this lunchtime.
13. I used to shy away from the Brits, but now I'm beginning to work out a decent (if slightly gamey) strategy. 2" mortars are quite handy if massed up with the Co. Commander and fired indirectly. Churchill 8's and Wasps are well handy vs Inf. Achilles do ok against most German tanks, and use Stuarts to try and get flank shots. Use Humbers as expendable recon (NOT gamey, this is how they were used), and MMG carriers as inf support. Brits are best on the defense, but with a bit of luck luck you can make a decent fist of it on the attack.
14. Both the Poles and the French are cut-down versions of the Yanks/Brits with new .wav files added, and the only difference I can see is that they have drastically reduced force options. I've never played with them ,and can't see any reason for ever doing so. BTW, is it true that the rudest swear-word in CM is part of the French .wav collection?
15. The Sdkfz7 is a bit of a "flukey" vehicle: there's probably a thread on it here somewhere. My own preference is for Hetzers with 20mm/75mm 250's or 251's, but I think you'll find everybody has their own ideas. Enjoy the game!
16. ..a further point has just arisen: AT mines (NOT Daisy Chains) seem easier to spot on roads than in open ground, etc. Logical, I suppose.
17. difficult to trace the history of a single tank. your best bet is either to plough through the Bundesarchive and see if there are any complete records, or check out some Wehrmacht/SS unit histories (available on line if you speak German) for a lucky hit on a "...it was a sad day when we had to hand over old PZiv XXX that Hans and I had served in since 1939" style of reference. either way, i think your chances are slim.
18. sorry, missed the point on this one. however..... the last time the PZIV saw combat vs the Sherman was in 1966-67 in whatever Arab/Israeli conflict was kicking off then. The Syrians had the Panzers IIRC, so the answer is probably yes. Also the Swiss army was still using Hetzers and 250/1's in the mid-70's, although I have a feeling some of these were produced under licence.
19.
quote:
boy_Rectum seems to have had a sense of humour bypass. One would think he works in local government or something

20. MkIVa entered production in '38 with a 75mm short gun, but didn't see action till '39. final version was the IVJ where they replaced the generator for the turret traverse with a petrol engine. PzI and II were produced in '36, saw action in the Spanish civil war and were probably still lurking about in heavily chopped versions (befehlswagen, SP carriages) in 44-45). the Bren Carrier prototype first hit the streets in the mid-20's, and we still use them as public transport today (except not).
21. Q:are there still people out there who find Douglas Pratchett and Terry Adams funny? A:yep, they're the same people who laugh at their own peng contributions.
