1.
quote:
Well, think I'll get me another cup of rotgut." That was a signal to everyone else in the hooch that the ritual was about to begin.

Michael, when I was a Pvt. or PFC I could have sworn that Staff NCO's (E-6 and up in the Gun Club) were issued coffee cups with their first rocker stripe! They also seem to have a standard manual of arms for the coffee cup, which involves holding the cup at chest level with your forearm parallel to the floor, and it doesn't involve much actual coffee drinking as much as walking around with it all day. Coffee drinking did really seem a SNCO ritual as partaking in the ritual was frowned upon when we lowly boots did it. (Outside the mess hall) Another bizarre Marine ritual was the adoption of chewing tobacco by fresh -from-boot Marines. I remember how when we were left at ease in formation outside any place in Camp Pendleton that 90% of us (Not me, for one) would "dip up" and proceed with the disgusting ritual of chewing and spitting and generally fouling up the air (Dip breath makes smoker's breath smell like peppermints). You could always tell were a platoon had been "parked" for a while as the ground would be covered in spit, looking from a distance as if someone had parked a dozen old buicks on that spot. Another danger of dipping is that you could never safely set down a soda can anywhere and leave it unattended for more than a few seconds, as some dipping bastard would re-appropriate it as his personal spit reservoir, and yes, there have been several "accidents" were unwary soda owners would return and drink from their cans. Also you could never throw any paperwork in the trash that you think you might need again,as it too would be coated in the sickening brown substance almost instantly.
quote:
Gyrene, you would be pleased to know that the "honeysucker" truck still runs in Camp Pendleton. Everytime we see that guy we think,"sucks to be him." Funny thing is that he probably makes 2-3 times more than any serviceman.

We were all pretty sure the guy was making more money than we were, hell anyone made more money than we did.
quote:
the "honeysucker" guy complains to the nearest officer

The civilian employees that I think pissed me off the most with their ratting on any little thing we did were the Filipino taylors at MCRD San Diego...The Master Gunny running the supply section there at the time was also Filipino, so I guess that made them feel that they could complain to him about ANYTHING. I remember one of them poked me with a pin when I was getting fitted for the Alphas and I said something along the lines of "Watch it" or something really innoccous like that. (I really did not cuss him out) and I got an instant "I'll get the Master Gunny here you troublemaker", which he did and I got an earfull and a half. Lovely. 5.56 or 7.62?

Hello all, I'm not a poster to this side of BTS's forum nor am I a player of Tac-ops, so forgive me for butting in. I cannot help to but to agree with Minmax on the point that larger calibers are better in all but very few instances. A dramatic example can be found in the winter offesives in Korea, 1950. The CCF forces heavily utilized the Russian PPSh (Known as the "Burp Gun" to GI's and Marines) which fires the 7.62x25 round (Quite a bit smaller then the current 7.62x39 AK round) while the American side favoured the M1 Garand and it's 30.06 round (Which is itself quite more powerful than the 7.62 NATO). Many American fighting men suffered from multiple hits from PPSh's but a combination of their very bulky clothing and the extreme cold (Which often froze blood on wounds, effectively stopping the bleeding) made the small 7.62x25 caliber much less efficient than the much more powerful M1, which also had the added benifit of far greater range. Incidently most American forces in the Chosin Reservoir are (And later Korean War campaigns) ditched their M1 Carbines (Firing a .30 caliber round more akin to an elongated pistol cartridge that a 7.62) which lacked the knock down power to stop Chinese rushes and the blowback energy to operate its own action in extreme cold. How the M16A2 or the M249 SAW would perform the very same dramatic and extreme conditions as in the Chosin is debatable, but I'm sure that the M1 and its heavy cartridge (Along with the BAR) made a great contribution in that campaign. My unsolicited 2 cents. Gyrene
  3. Foobar, we can hold the game till you are back, we want you there from the start. Do want to run the infantry or armor, btw? Gyrene
  4.
quote:
I still remember the guard at the gate of CFB Calgary, carrying a submachinegun without ammunition, and the Military Police at the local Armouries - both armed with sinister looking flashlights. You hardly knew there was a war on...

That's why the US/Canada border is the longest unprotected border in the world! Any Russkie Commie Pinko Bastich Would Be Invader would get cut to tiny bits if they attempted to invade us via Canada! A toast of Labatt's to out brave defenders of the North! Gyrene
  5.
quote:
It would be interesting to have a peacetime service game called "Noncombat Mission: Beyond Tedium". I could comment on the realities of that simulation.

Turn five: -Sent my mop and bucket team to the barracks hallway in hunt mode. -My foxtail operator has run into a large ambush of ghost turds, he will need back up. -My liberty squad has been waylaid when they stumbled into the control radius of the paint detail CO. -Many of my squads are busy hunting for barracks beer leeches. -Another of my squads has been eliminated for mis-identifying a Sgt Major as a Gunny. It will spend the rest of the game picking up cigarette butts from the parking lot. Peace is hell. Gyrene
  6.
quote:
Not quite. My Mac is set to 800X600 but CM always defaults to 640X480. Michael

Michael, go to your system folder/preferences, find the CM prefs file and dump it. Then make sure you are at 800x600 mode before you start the game again. This should give you a new prefs file which will now default to 800x600 Gyrene
  7. 88's are nasty and infantry would have had a hard time across something as open as a wheat field also. Gyrene
  8. Your video card's memory will determine your resolution. I can squeeze 800x600 out of my Rev D iMac (6mb vid RAM), but have played it at 1024x768 on a newer iMac. Gyrene
  9. You drove the honeysucker? Wow, I'm in awe! Did you have to go to NBC school first? I had many a "poop burning" detail in Somalia as Honeysuckers were a luxury not afforded to us. I have many fond memories of the Saudi's version of the poop-sucker making his once-every-two-weeks rounds. Have you ever seen a pyramid of MRE by-products cresting over the rim of the hallowed plastic throne? I remember in Camp Pendleton a civilian guy did that job and one time he took his kid along. "One day son, this will all be yours!" Gyrene
  10. Capt. Foobar, count me in. I'll give it a shot. The Infantry/Armor split does make sense. Gyrene
  11. Foobar, how about Player A Allied has Infantry & player B Allied would have Airborne, while the Axix side could be split between Heer and Fallschirmjager or something along those lines? They'd be easy to tell apart in the game. Gyrene
  12. Not to be a party pooper, but I think that CM hits a little too close to home for someone with some hard combat experience to enjoy playing. I feel guilty enough when a squad I send to rush a building gets decimated and my own time in combat is limited. It does give a good overview of how squad level combat unfolds, though. To make it even more realistic BTS would have to crank up the Fog of War by about 200% and the moaning of your cyber buddies wouldn't stop when the "done" button comes up. That would a big turn off for me an many others, I think the level of violence is fine as it is. I agree with the not being dirty part. Plus you get to eat real food and you can put the war on hold. 16. Would it be possible to include a feature in CM2 that would allow a player to play a QB on his own map on on the map from a scenario? This would greatly extend the playability of all scenarios and would save many PBEM'ers from ho-hum random maps. Picture the Russians giving "Valley of Trouble" a try. Just an idea. Gyrene

  18. Tiger, you need Photoshop Have you tried Canvas, btw? Excellent app also. Gyrene
  19. FO's when used correctly are one of the most deadly units you can have, so I would not use them to lay smoke unless its an emergency. if you need smoke use your tanks or on board mortars. Gyrene
  20. Stormhouse, on my first time playing the German side I won the game very easily and had all my tanks by the end and I'm no Rommel, so its possible. I crept two of my Stug's along the edge of the woods on the hill until I had hull down status and a commanding view of the valley on the US side, and the other Stug was sent to the church side. By turn 5 all Shermans were out of action and my infantry owned the church and the tall light building by the farm. Of course I knew the what the US side was bringing to the game, so it helped and having played the US side before I knew what the key terrain was. Try it again, it's very possible to get a near perfect victory as the Germans on that map. Gyrene
  21. That might qualify as one of the top 10 longest posts in this forum. Yeesh. Did you mention the sharpshooter's 20-odd shot 1903 Springfield rifle? Too much to read. Gyrene
  22. I just want to clarify a few things: Some people have voiced concerns about the potential for unbrindled catastrophic mayhem and all-around discontent and nervousness that can occur when mixing CM3 with CM4. Its is perfectly safe to mix CM3 (The Wrath of Squeaky) with CM4 (Combat Mission:Besides Overlord) as CM3:The Wrath of Squeaky is not a BTS product. CM3:The Wrath os Squeaky is a squad-level Hamster warfare simulator, which still has some problems with it's AI. (Hamsters insist on shooting the remaining food pellets at the gerbils even after a King Rat comes into full view of them.) On the BTS front it is still considered dangerous and just plain rude to attempt to mix CM3 and CM4 has both have 56% more CM2 that CM2, CMBO or CMBO have, which would total to 112% more CM2 than any of the aforementioned BTS products and would possible cause complete system shut down, male pattern baldness and flatulence. Lets be careful out there! Gyrene
  23.
quote:
Was it in Panama where the undefeatable SEALs were routed? Or Vietnam, a small communist country with obsolet industry and armament.

Scipio, SEALs are NOT undefeatable and they regularly get into deep crap for taking on far more than they can chew. And your comment about Vietnam is entirely off the mark, and I'm sure you know it to be so. A country that fielded the most awesome Air Defence Network ever faced in a conflict, posessed a very well trained and disciplined army (The NVA was the real threat in Vietnam, not the VC like the countless movies like to portray) who in their country had already defeated the Japanese and the French and later went on to tackle China can hardly be called the "backward and obsolete" I suggest you do some research on the real reasons why the Vietnam War was lost and pay close attention to the ratio of US to NVA won battles and you will see that the war was lost in Washington DC and not in Southeast Asia. Remember: The US lost in Vietnam and so did Australia Gyrene
