  1. No point in waiting impatiently for the demo since the download time the first few days will be way too long. (if it's like last time anyhow). It's like rushing out when the movie's over. All you are rushing for is to stand in line to get out. Better to sit back and listen to the credits music. Me, I'm savouring my CMBB matches... kind of aiming to have them wrapped up by the middle of December at the latest. Above all, I'm not wetting myself over waiting for the demo like SOME people around here. Sure, I'm looking forward to it, but come on, folks. Get a life.
  2. The first season of the rip-off sucked golf balls through a garden hose (backwards), but the new season seems to be almost viewable.
  3. About typos. It is not really correct publishing procedure to expect the author to also be the editor of his own book. However in this day and age, desktop publishing has made it more and more common that an author is supposed to provide photo-ready material. This will ALWAYS contain more typos and errors than a properly produced book. Editing, and writing, are two very different specialties, and it's a shame that publishers are less and less willing to pay for an editor.
  4. One place to look is in the forum archives. I've learned tons of stuff from threads on the various forums here. Searching for it all would be quite a chore, which is why I ask: Does anyone have a collection of links to classic 'tactics' threads.

  8. I find it tragic and appalling that so many families don't seem to understand this. How many gnomes find themselves abandoned — the novelty worn off — and must eke out a living scavenging at the city dump? How many are left with no greater dream than being accepted to one of the coveted (and all too few) spots at an abandoned gnome shelter? How many people walk by a little gnome, holding its hat out begging for a few pennies, and just harden their hearts or even kick it out into the street? Scenes like these are all too common across America, Europe and Australia! How can we have gone so astray? Do us all a favor, and before you purchase your gnome, attend a gnome care and safety course. Not only will this help prevent tragic accidents (the kind where a family members' brains slide slowly down the wall) but the modest cost and investment of time will help insure that you are prepared to care for your rubber gnome from the day you place him — dapper, perky and bright coloured — in your garden, to the autumn of his life (even if his paint flakes, his pointy hat goes flaccid, yes even if he gets brittle and smells of an old tire swing and spouts incomprehensible poetry while chatting up preteens of both sexes).

  10. This I disagree with. There have always been ways of playing which the game engine allows, but which are considered bad form. That's why we are having a debate at all, we're trying to determine what is or isn't bad form, not just saying that anything allowed by the engine is okay.

  12. AGREE. The incremental delay for waypoints is not a good feature. It's justification was poorly thought through from the beginning and it works badly in practice. It should never have been put into the game. The arguments pro and con have been hashed out elsewhere. To put it briefly, it is based on a confusion of levels of command. If a vehicle is to drive down a road, the guy giving the order doesn't have to explain to them every spot where they are going to turn along the way. The same goes for infantry, where the squad leader will automatically choose a tactical route along the way. [ November 14, 2003, 04:21 AM: Message edited by: CMplayer ]
  13. First turn arty is 'fire plan' but obviously the defender can't have had a fire plan registered to hit that spot at that time since presumably the attacker just arrived. This is made worse by there not being anywhere to hide. A related nit that I have, is that command delays should be ignored on turn one. A vehicle with a movement order should be able to be viewed as having already been in motion as the game began, for instance. This latter, in itself, would go a long way towards remedying the problem, since vehicles could immediately start spreading out, to get out from under one of these gamey, defenders' first turn instant arty barrages.
  14. Thanks. I'll try it, but the problem is that I'm talking about it switching to the very thing lying at the place where I'm area firing. See what I mean? I area fire onto a 'last seen' marker, then the thing reappears right there, and the mortar targets it, and has to rebracket etc etc etc. That's why it seems so ridiculous if the team forgets the range after every switch. If it weren't for that I could live with it.

  16. What, is a a single tile with two or three small buildings on it? That would be great if the engine would allow it. There could be several, all diagonalized and jumbled in different directions. Build your own shantytown to blow up.

What do you say we up the ante. The loser must perform unmentionables with a hamster. Or should the winner get to do that? I don't know, you decide. At least I didn't get tricked into deploying on your right flank.

  19. Are you sure that prototype actually saw service in North Africa? It doesn't look entirely practical. Too many parts to get fouled up by the sand. But then, what do I know...?

  21. Not to be too tediously literal, but — well actually yes, in order to be too tediously literal — this is what I was thinking of: "Waiter, I'll have a water." I'll pass on Seanachai's offer.
  22. I hate to break it to you but I actually like Southerners and the South. Southern accents sound nice, their famous hospitality is not a myth, and, A Frown is not a Noun notwithstanding, Southerners aren't actually stupider than your average slick talking, carpetbagging Yankee. Of course none of this applies to Texas. AFAIC the Alamo was Mexico's greatest contribution to western civilization. If only they could have finished the job. Now back to that little ditty and classification of the pawts of speech. Anything you can put the indefinite article in front of is, by definition, a noun. That means any word you can put 'a' or 'an' in front of simply must be a noun. (though not all nouns can take an article: 'mass nouns' or 'uncountables' like 'water' in some senses don't take articles... ) So the point is that by calling her little ditty A Frown is not a Noun the teacher is being doubly dimwitted, since the very title includes proof that frown is a noun.   23. One thing that irritates me about area fire is the way it's not 'sticky' if the ordnance decides to target something else. I've got a 50mm mortar, area firing the spot where a gun is located. It then decides to stop area firing to target the gun. Then the gun disappears and the mortar stops firing. Bad Tac AI. Bad. What's even worse, it seems like the mortar team has to start again from scratch ranging in the target each time it goes from area fire, to targetting the gun, and back again (even though the two points are a couple of meters from each other).
