  1. WW2 has fascinated me from the beginning(must have been about 7 years old...) It is not only a clash beween good and evil, but more importantly for me a clash of ideologies, especially on the Eastern Front. Today is dominated by the winners, ie the anglo-saxon capitalists...It could have been very different indeed. What kind of a world would we have today if the Fascists had won in 1941? What if the Allies hadn't landed in Normandy and Russia had pushed all the way to the Atlantic? Yep, I guess what attracts me in that whole era is the "colourful" ideologies, as opposed to our dull daily lives...So far, yet so close to us...
  2. So you mean that SS was a part of the Wehrmacht? Sounds strange to me...I thought the SS were a completely separate organization. I guess I've always confused Heer and Wehrmacht then.
  3. Fionn, what is actually the difference between the Heer (land army) and the Wehrmacht (land army as well I believe)? Didn't you mean "SS" instead? Just curious, I've never heard of any difference between "Heer" divisions and Wehrmacht divisions.
  4. Def, to be correct I guess you'd have to pronounce that :"shtoog" (with a fairly short "oo" though.)
  5. When it is a one page topic I can read my reply all right, but if my reply figures on the second or third or fourth page of the topic then I cannot see it for a while.
  6. You're probably thinking about Oradour-sur-Glane. There isn't much left though! AFAIK typical french villages haven't changed much in the past 50-60 years, you won't find anything truly exceptional in Oradour I think.
  7. Titles including the word "winter" for CM2 aren't right because that would leave out Barbarossa, Kursk, Blau, Bagration, etc. Don't forget many German soldiers complained about how hot it could get in the summer in Russia! Often up to 30 degrees celsius...Hell, the Crimea almost has a Mediterranean climate! What about CM2: "When Titans Clashed" I know, I've stolen it from somewhere, but who hasn't? CM3:"The Soft Underbelly of Europe"
  8. My name says it all as well Preferably in the WaffenSS or the GrossDeutschland
  9. 16 here as well, Manieri. IIRC lots of guys were in their thirties or fourties, that's why the average was app.39. Some chaps in their twenties, a handful of teenagers, and a few over 50s.
  10. I sincerely hope the graphics are not final! The tanks and planes look good enough, what annoys me is the background...It seems so empty, and ugly.
  11. Hmm..I think the reviewer is wrong when he says that Germany lost 250,000 men in casualties and that another 100,000 were captured. It seems to me a wild exaggeration, the numbers were respectively IIRC 190,000 and 90,000.
  12. Is there any way you guys could put some commentary in the movies? Just curious...
  13. Have the screenshots been updated at the website? WW2Online is huge but frankly the screenshots looked terrible...And do they have an approximate release date?
  14. 4000...Geez that looks too much even for CM's operations. A battalion is made up of (very approximately) 600 men. So you would need an operation seven times as big as a very large scenario. I don't think that's possible.
  15. Man, what a celebration!! Haven't seen that kind of enthusiasm for a long while... Bravo bravissimo BTS, outstanding work. That's a neat game. BTW, can anybody tell me how long the intro movie is? (yeah, haven't downloaded it yet...)
  16. CoolColJ and SS, fair enough guys, I can understand that some people don't like the Campaign Series, although all these bugs you mention didn't plague me...If you think WF/EF2 is too slow don't even try TOAW!! Yup I also find some scenarios a bit boring, but once you get hooked on something you can't stop playing The tactical richness of the situations exceeds -for me- the thrill of watching real-time movies. BTW it is best to play these games on 2D mode, that way you can play bigger, and therefore more interesting battles.
  17. CoolColJ, WF has got NOTHING TO DO with CM!!! Can you play Corps-or even regiment- level battles in CM? No! Do you have to worry whether your tanks are hull-down or not in WF? No! Is WF squad based? No! Does CM cover the Mediterranean theater? No, no , and no... So stop thrashing the Campaign Series "because CM is better", they are complementary. Personally I prefer the Campaign Series(no shame!) because I prefer grand tactics, rather than squad-based tactics. But you can live with both of them!
  18. And I'm the second!!! I won't download it though, my patience finds 10MB a bit too much just for an intro. At least they give the release date finally! [This message has been edited by PanzerLeader (edited 03-28-2000).]
  19. Speaking about nations, there also tends to be quite a few Finns on many wargame discussion boards...Most of them are TOAW fans, it seems.
  20. Personally I don't care if some wargames aren't exactly realistic...As long as the developers listen to the customers and make new patches all the time to make the game a bit more realistic each time. I've never heard anybody whine because a game was "too realistic"! The complexity rating thing would be good...if there were more wargames on the PC out there! Such a rating would only be of some use if you needed to compare a few games and see which one is more suited to you. Currently there isn't much choice! Even Road To Moscow won't be published now...
  21. You guys are focusing too much on late-war generals for the Germans...CM isn't everything! It reminds me of that obsession on this forum for super tanks and tank destroyers...As if PzIIIs and IIs didn't exist! Panthers and Tigers were luxuries on the front at any time. My view: - Best Korps Commanders: Guderian, crossing the Meuse at Sedan with XIX PzKorps in May 1940 and going to the channel; and Hausser, retaking Kharkov in March 1943 with 1.SS PanzerKorps. - Best Division Commander: I agree with Meyer, although his attacks in Normandy were unsuccessful. Rommel and 7. Panzer are also well known in France.
  22. Hmmm...Such a question here will probably produce incorrect results. The people on this board like CM because they generally prefer tactical wargames. Go to the TOAW discussion board and you will get very different results. Personally my favourite is TOAW: Wargame of the Year edition. Much more realsitic combat results than in the original TOAW.
  23. WW2Online? It looks like a very good idea but the screenshots are so ugly. I hope the "rats" can really improve on them but for the moment I wouldn't play a game with graphics like that! Team Fortress 2 is going to ruin WW2Online. Much more pleasing to the eye.
  24. Hmm...5mn turns? Platoon level? The Campaign series from Talonsoft with (I think) its fairly accurate tables may help you... It's exactly the same scale at least...And is enjoyed by many people!
  25. Looks like you guys forgot "Lost Victories" by Erich von Manstein Not quite for CM players, rather TOAW players...Lots of "boring logistics" stuff in there but it turns out to be very interesting.
