1. I was trying to play CM online last night with a friend from work and we wanted to use Roger Wilco so we could chat live instead of typing....When I had the game up and he didn't, we could hear each other. Once he got the game up, he couldn't hear me, though I could still hear him... According to Roger Wilco, it should work with any DirectSound enabled game...Does CM use DirectSound though...? If so, what RW settings should I use? Anyone else using RW? Or any other free live chat?
2. What?? Fionn capable of doing that? I'm not a sycophant but here I must come to Fionn's defence...He has devoted a lot to this game and probably is mature enough not to play silly jokes like that. I mean, c'mon Lewis, get a sense of reality.
3. 1.)PzKpfw IVH vs. Shermans engagements. 2.)Huge maps with loads of room to manoeuver your tanks around the flanks... 3.)Infantry battles in the bocage. 4.)Ardennes and NordWind battles(snow at last, and fog, and rain...!) 5.)The wait for CM2
4. CEO, thanx for the reply. But here the question was that the Tank Commander, from his turret, should have LOS forward over the ridge. I didn't want to fire, I just wanted to see whether there was anybody over the ridge. Yet LOS seems to be calculated from lower than the TC so it didn't work. I moved it slightly forward, but then it wasn't in a good hull down position anymore and got wasted by 5 waiting Shermans it hadn't even seen 10 seconds before... That's something that could be improved... If you want I can send you the picture so you can make your own opinion on the problem.
5. I live in London but am moving to Rio de Janeiro in September.
6. Hehe, BTW, Unt Reifenstein is an SS infantry platoon commander in LD, not a Stug Commander! (yes, I'm sad enough to remember that! You know you're too much into CM when you dress as a german officer in front of your computer and shout orders to your troops and duck in the face of incoming MG fire...And when you go out in the street for the first time in a week, you think "Whoa, they have really improved the building textures!"
7. PanzerMaster just registered today. Just ignore him, for he is an idiot that I have heard about before. Steve, please delete this thread as it is useless and was written by somebody with no other interest than to bother the people posting to this thread...He doesn't even know what CM is.
8. But no way to post it if it isn't on the net right? Oh well, I'll just wait and create my homepage later... I swear LineOfSight is wrong on the pic. I've got a StugIII behind a ridge line. Only the turret emerges, and it is not buttoned. The tank commander should have clear line of sight over the ridge, yet LOS is blocked... It should even be able to fire...
9. I did a search on this and didn't find anything. So how can you paste a screenshot from CM into your post? Sorry if it has been covered before...I just need to check your opinion on a screen I took ages ago from the beta...LOS just doesn't look right. Thank you
10. Hmmm....25 years of age? Nope, there was a very long discussion about the average age on this forum a while back and the average was around 39 years of age...Quite old, eh? I would guess the vast majority of posters here are in their thirties-early fourties...
11. Kudos to all! I appreciate the advice and help But does anybody know whether it is likely that CM arrives in the UK before July? That's my main concern really. I'd like to know whether I can get it before I leave...
12. Hello, I haven't preordered yet for a simple reason: I live in London, UK, and in the first few days of July I'll be moving off to Brazil but I don't know my address there yet! So basically, what I need to know is this: if I preorder the game now, can I confidently give my English address or should I wait and give my Brazilian one(thus not playing before September!)? (oh no, the horror! ) Thanx for any advice on this, I am divided between impatience and security...
13.
quote:
Well its nice to see that most people are still completely able to miss the point.

Well Madmatt it's sad to see that you can become so easily irritated. I know you have a busy cyberlife.
quote:
We don't, so they didnt.

Excuse my poor grasp of the English language, but who is "they"? Should I understand that because the guys at BTS don't have the correct hardware, we, with better technology(and technology will get better before CM2) can't reap the full benefits from our machines? All right, I have nothing against that. But I'm sure some here are mad enough to play huge scenarios at the risk of a crash and slow play. You should just include it as an option.
quote:
And yes, a map at the current maximum size WILL BE SLOW TO PLAY regardless of how many units will be on it. You also have to take into consideration the scale that CM is meant to simulate. This is not Division scale but a reinforced Battalion scale MAX. That the capabilty to build and play larger battles than that is already a bonus and to be honest I think that they have already planned for the future by making the maps and unit count as high as it is now.

For the slowness thing: if it's an option, then those who are so impatient can skip it. The others can enjoy it And if the CM engine is so realistic, then why can't it perform at any other reasonable scale?(before logistics and supply become factors) You would just need more interaction between higher HQs(Batt. HQs need to remain in contact with Reg.HQ, etc)
14.
quote:
If you really want to have 300 tanks on the screen at once then you can do it, but dont be surprised if it takes 10 minutes to resolve each turn...

First of all, we were talking about map size rather than number of units involved. Secondly, who cares about waiting 10 minutes for each turn to load? You can go read a book or finish your homework in the meantime! Or have dinner, which is what I used to do with large TOAW scenarios...This ain't a first person shooter! This is a strategy game, and what more, a wargame, commonly played by mature, patient people who savour the game, instead of devouring it. Oh well, if really it is not doable today, then I hope it is tomorrow. It would just have been nice to have the option to choose really large map sizes(10 kms or so?), so that those who cannot afford them don't play them, and the others, can(to their risks, and I for one am willing to take these risks, if it means I can at last enjoy a decent regimental size battle...)
15.
quote:
And, when we all get those mega computers to handle huge maps, we will be into CM 2, 3 and 4 and they can and will change things : )

Yes, we'll need to wait a while for the really big battles, but even today I'm sure a small portion of us have(or will, before CM2) a 500+mhz computer. It is an injustice that these guys cannot fully benefit from their superior technology, because of a small bunch of grumbling wargamers that refuse to update their long-outdated computers... And again, what is wrong with having an unlimited map size? It may not be indispensable, but what are the disadvantages? Dan, the people who would complain that they cannot run the big battles just have to buy a new computer or NOT play the huge battles(which is the case anyway now...) BTS could attract the entire WF/EF2 community if they gave bigger maps. Some are more interested by grand tactics rather than small unit actions...It is something I(and I'm not alone!) would be looking forward to.
16. I am with Steve S on this one. The guys at BTS have to look into the future: in 5 years' time I suspect most of us will still be playing CM. Yet the computer technology will allow much bigger maps...And I'm probably not the only one here who enjoys monster scenarios, that take weeks to finish But hey, maybe the reason behind this is that it is too dificult to program. I remember they had similar hopes for Call To Power, but it never materialised. Otherwise I can't really understand why BTS didn't include it
17. I fear we've overrated the game waay too much in the huge excitement after the release of the gold. So I gave it 92. CM needs bigger maps!!!!
18. It's already been discussed at length(Capt. Manieri and other freaks...). Basically IIRC Fionn often said that the game engine isn't well suited to a DDay scenario. I think it was because the Allied troops on the beaches would get decimated way too easily by MG fire from bunkers. You can still do a DDay battle properly though...it can happen later in the day, outside the beaches
19. Tommi, I'm curious, where did you find those WW2 diaries? In a book, or are they originals?
20. Oh god, in the world of cyber forums there's probably never been anything quite like "the wait for CM1"...Legendary. This must be the liveliest forum around on the net. Stuff that will make you feel nostalgic when the game is released!
21. Well, I thought I'd join in and also wish an excellent recovery for Larry. Maybe this thread will get to 500?
22. There must be some very good ideas for scenarios in the 12.SS HJ counter attack in Normandy against the Canadians, beginning of June 44. Panthers, PanzerGrenadiers,...
23. hehe..100 men stuck in 20 square meters...You could probably kill several with one bullet only! A machinegunner's dream
24. Here is one great example of static defence that worked, PLUS it was all done by Hitler, the great military moron himself! The Soviet winter offensive of 41-42 was in the first weeks a great success, but then, by clinging on to their positions, German "hedgehogs" such as Rzhev, Kharkov, Taganrog, Kursk, Vyazma or Bryansk withstood the Red Army's onslaught even when these locations had been bypassed by dozens of miles on the flanks. The soldiers could find shelter in these fortified points as opposed to the Red Army's troops exposed to the cold on the open steppe. For once General Winter worked in favour of the invadors! Hitler tried his luck again two and half years later on the central front but the Red Army had learnt from its mistakes!
