1. I had similar situation happen to me twice under version 1.1. I'm not calling it a bug, so here I go. I was playing the "Punching a Hole" West Wall operation, and was killing infantry with my 2 panthers. I used one panther of "regular" status to "area fire" a building full of enemy troops. When I clicked GO, my tank decided to go back to firing at a lone squad up on a hill. The squad had been attacking an abandoned bunker's crew, and was no threat to him. I thought that was strange since it was a squad and not an anti-tank team. Especially since the squad was about 100m further away then the building full of troops. I shrugged it off and at the next turn reordered the tank to "area fire" the building. Unfortunately I got the same result as the first time. He went back to the lone squad on the hill, routed them, and then picked a more reasonable infantry target (but never the building). I've been playing ver. 1.1 for a while, and have seen this situation only one other time. Take note that the denied target was always insight. Also my units never targeted the wrong enemy units because of their greater threat capability. The weird thing is that this has only happened 2 times out of at least 30 or 40 missions. Just my two cents, -Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." -General George S. Patton, Jr.
 2. It's all in the game dfgardner. While reading this book, you should create some scenarios from what you've read. Much like Wild Bill and the rest of the INCREDIBLE scenario designers, they use historical accounts with real maps of Europe in their creations. I suggest you do the same my friend! -Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. 4. Ahh man here is a perfect example of the crappy side of a message board. And Flipper your topic AND your message SUCKS! I just cant see how people can bitch and whine about an INCREDIBLE game such as CM! If you guys don't like CM then go back to playing those other "piece o' shyte" strategy games. Leave the good ones like CM to those who understand and appreciate it....... -Head PS Piss OFF Flipper! ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. 8. If find the AI to be slightly improved in 1.1. I also find Wittman to be a complete and total bad ass in Villers-Bocage! Much like he really was, but I don't remember such precise gunnery from him in ver 1.05. -Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. 10. One can find so much whining and sobbing about their bad luck in CM, and how they think it shouldn't have happened here. So I thought I'd send up a post on my impeccable luck. I was playing Wild Bill's One Tough Tanker scenario about Sgt. Pool. Midway through I began shelling the German controlled town at the end of the map with some 105, and 155mm fireworks. Well the German reinforcements rolled in, and one of their Panther's began making it's way through the town to engage my troops. Then all of a sudden *BOOM*!!! A 155mm shell went straight through the top hatch on the buttoned Panther's turret and set it ablaze! Please join in fellas. I'd love to hear some good luck game-saving stories of your own. 11. I see this question asked all the time. Why can't infantry take out tanks when they have no anti-tank weapons? The problem I have with this is that my infantry DOES take out tanks in this manner! SURE its a lot harder if you don't have the right goods, but its worked for me. I'd say maybe a little less then 50% of the time. And that's realistic I think. I don't think a squad could pop a tank as easily as they do in the movies. -Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." -General George S. Patton, Jr.
 12. My thoughts on this have always been along the lines of the "status" of the crew. I have read the story of an American tank commander who wrote that they always carried some M1 rifles, and a BAR in their Sherman. I have had tanks get hit and abandoned with no casualties. In those cases it would be nice if the crew grabbed some rifles on the way out. But I also think that this scenario would be very hard to calculate. Say the threat is far away, your Sherman gets hit and there is no one heart. The problem is that the crew thinks Mark IV 500m away just might pump another 75 into them. My final thoughts on this is, that the game is fine the way it is. Crews are not defenceless and they are not half-squads (that's fair). They are just men who saw their lives flash before them and are lucky enough to fight another day (in another tank). As for bunker crew I feel the same way. It will be interesting to see how BTS addresses this topic in CM 2, if they address it at all....... Just my two cents, Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." -General George S. Patton, Jr.

 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Phoenix: Ok...can someone explain this?? During a game (PBEM) Im doing I've got some veteran units under C&C of a HQ unit with a +2 stealth rating...all three squads are crawling along through woods. Suddenly, one of the squads stands up, and takes shots at a fleeing enemy unit 400+ meters away. Obviously they have zero impact at this range except to draw the attention of an enemy tank the wheels around and lands an HE round on top of them. from 500 meters. And another Inf unit that opens up on them. While I realize that "stuff happens", isn't this a bit odd? Veteran units, +2 stealth, crawling so as to be unseen.

I'm sorry Phoenix, I'd have to see it to believe it. Not that I don't believe it happened, (the 400m attack for no reason that is) I'd just still have to see it. Perhaps they reached the end of their crawl command and you did not have them set to "hide". By the way, what version where you running? In my experiences crawling has always been stealthy. For example, an enemy unit was in a small pile of rubble last night. One of my squads started tearing them up about 80m away. The enemy started to crawl back and then I lost sight of them. At the next turn the unit popped up at the far end of the rubble and began their retreat over open ground to the woods. This tells me that they did not crawl and "hide". They continued to crawl to the other side of the rubble. They became visible again when they jumped up to run. To make sure of this, I traced my squads LOS marker over the entire pile of rubble. It was small so I could see the whole pile and the other side of it (where they began running). This was while running beta build 24. So to answer the question I say crawling IS stealthy. See for yourself. Take a support unit (mortar, or machine gun). Walk him through the woods (without an HQ for stealth) and stop him at the edge before the open ground. With the enemy about 150m away facing those woods they will open fire before he stops. Try the same thing with crawling when you get close to the edge and you wont be seen. Oh, and don't forget to hide at the end! -Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. 15. Hey Guys, I've had this happen to me twice now while running BETA build 24. While my Sherman was moving "fast" on dry ground, it got bogged down and immobilized about one second later (if that long). It immobilized so fast after bogging it was like hitting a mine. At first I thought "HEY I've got good ground conditions here, but crap happens I guess". This happened again with an Humber armored car, but it was in snow so that was fine with me. The thing that catches my attention is how fast they immobilized after bogging down (its nearly instant). I'm not saying this is a bug at all. Its just that I've been playing C.M. for a while under version 1.05, and have never seen it until build 24. I can understand in the snow, but on dry ground? Is the game simulating my tank hitting a bad spot and throwing a track? Oh well, I've just never seen this before and would like to see what you all think. Thanks, Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." -General George S. Patton, Jr.
 16.
quote:
Originally posted by BeWary: I've got an STB Velocity 4400 (a TNT card). It's probably the same thing you have. I can e-mail the bios to you. It is version 1.10 for AGP and NTSC (North America) only. Let me know if you want it. STB was bought by 3Dfx a while ago, and there should be a link to the STB tech support site from www.3dfx.com. I'm not sure, but I think the Velocity 4400 is the only TNT card that STB made, but please make sure that's the right card before you try to apply the bios update. Also, you can try the drivers on that page, but they are very old. They worked fine for me in Unreal Tournament, but I had to upgrade them to the NVidia reference drivers a while ago. Of course, they don't have Win2000 drivers, but might the NT drivers work? I don't know... BeWary

Mines a PCI card BeWary. I don't think that the AGP BIOS would work for it. Also, I've never seen NT drivers work for Win2000. Morphing Cell, that's the exact same issue (to the 'T'). Its a real shame too, although it is bearable with the alt-TABing. Maybe somebody will put out a patch or driver that will fix this problem (good vid-card + great OS + excellent game = crap video). Does anybody have this situation while running win9x with a TNT card? I guarantee its an issue with the NVIDIA Detonator drivers on Win2000. Later Fellas, Head

Madmatt

-------------------------------------------- No, thank you Madmatt. You guys are great, and so is BTS for having this message board. The strange thing is, that this problem is spermatic! Sometimes it looks good and sometimes it craps out. I'm pretty sure it is a driver issue with NVIDIA. They are some of the first to put out accelerated video drivers for Windows 2000 (and that's a whole new world of its own). I Thank everyone for their replies, and I'll keep a close eye on NVIDIA for updates. Lugnut, I'll try your idea out as well. Sounds reasonable, since the problem only occurs when it wants too. Thanks again, -Head
 19. --------------------------------------------
quote:
Originally posted by BeWary: It's probably a Win2000 driver issue, like you said, but did you try deleting the CM prefs file and restarting CM? If not, try that first. BeWary

-------------------------------------------- I don't think so. I'm using NVIDIA's latest Win2000 Detonator drivers. I've even tried using their older drivers, but got the same result. I also tried using the TNT drivers provided by DELL (whom I bought the computer and video card from). The game ran fine, but I got no Direct 3D support (so why even have the TNT card). And yes I tried changing the resolution modes and refresh rates, but it didn't help. Thanks for your help anyway..... -Head
 20. Hey Guys, I've got an NVIDIA RIVA TNT video card in my machine. I'm running Windows 2000 Professional, and have the latest Detonator drivers for my video card. When I run Combat Mission, the menu screen a has what looks like black spray paint from MS Paint on the top of the screen. When I go to select a battle, the writing and letters are blackened out and everything looks distorted. When I pick a battle I can't read the briefing or see the options for experience levels, bonuses, or fog of war settings (OUCH). After I begin the battle everything looks fine and direct 3D runs smooth (although I have seen the uniforms on some troops get distorted as well). The strange thing is, that after I installed the latest beta patch it ran great, ONCE! After that one game, it went back to its old tricks again. I've tried working with the drivers by disabling all of the features and enabling them, but to no prevail. Does anybody have any clues? It seems like I'll have to wait for new video drivers, or a patch from BTS on this one. My Brother has the same video card, running Windows 2000 and is experiencing the same problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, -Head

 23. I have read the same Sir Wamers Kahlenberg. The tank threw a track while traveling over rough terrane. The crew got out and repaired it during an artillery shelling. The only difference is, in Combat Mission your tracks are destroyed by enemy fire. That my friend, makes a huge difference on the time of repair. -Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country. 24. Hey fellas, Last night I was play "Elsdorf-Giants Clash", (the revised version from Wild Bill) and something weird happened. Almost mid way through the battle the Jumbo Shermans advanced by reversing towards me. If only my German anti-tank pillbox would have had a good line of sight, it would have been instant death! I've never seen anything like that before. I'm running ver. 1.05 and the AI had +3 experience. They advanced like that for a good 60 or 70 meters. All of my troops where in front of them, so I really can't imagine why they did such a thing. Any ideas fellas, thanks..... -Head ------------------ "No man ever won a war by dieing for his country.
