  1. : ) Nice to know. Capping is a good idea but if only on a State by State basis you can see premiums being used to support non-capped states premium rates - unless- somebody has the smarts to anticipate it and make some of the benefit at least apply to the capped states.
  2. So the bonus a side for the troops could make a net no effect? I am confused as I cannot understand the fundamental logic of making edges hard in the first place. I assume it was the same in CMSF - did not the absurdity get discussed then? So explicitly the answer is 1. Make deeper maps, as in deeper behind the objectives. Placing objectives deep inti the map being definitely not helpful. 2. Make scenarios purely with objectives and normal points for kills. Make sides friendly ? Reading it I cannot see that any unit cannot exit the required area. So provided the opposition was not specifically tasked with killing certain units then this should work without needing bonuses. Have I summed this up correctly?
  3. Actually I think you have done areally good job. Its very believable. This is probably the Game area where this really exceeds CM*1.
  4. The beauty of google. Looks like there is a small cemetery but street view does not provide much of a view. The village though is beautifully shown. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=9g8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&q=normandy+google&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=2048&bih=980&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl
  5. The talll bocage!!! NOOOOO! Surely only the small!
  6. I was afraid that the supplied kit might be a stumbling block. The church proper looks jsut right now. And of course the tower badly wrong : ( SO I agree with you, aesthetically you have to go with the bigger church : } I may have to learn about the modelling side as it is not much good me going on about what I am familiar with if its not within the game to deliver. ! BTW It suddenly struck me that in France you generally have graveyards separate from churches. This is not somehting I have ever considered before but I can recall many graveyards but off the top of my head none with a church attached!!! Oops Area for research required . Thank goodness there are some French members onboard. Now I could be wrong, and of course it could be different in the French regions. I will get back to the forum on that.
  7. Fair point. But why have lids at all? Does that help : )
  8. I am not aware of the reasons why BF decided that troops could not retreat of map but I see it as a huge blow to realism. So if designers would like to tell me why/why not I would be grateful. However the continual idiocy of so many scenarios where troops bounce off the edge of the map to run into 105mm barrages, or a stack of vehicles just sitting around with nowhere to go,is really making me doubt the games claim for realistic behaviour. So when designing PLEASE think carefully about this.
  9. I am sure you are right but the church seems very large for a small village. I have looked at a single black and white picture of the church and I think it has a single height of windows. And the tower is less massive. edit. Sorry sounds a bit nitpicky because actually it looks neat other than that.
  10. Castor? Only curious as there are so many Castor and Pollux variations that I am not sure how Guderian would fit the legends.
  11. Its not information that should be available surely?
  12. I played some LAN, - 1 or 2 minute turns - I have never counted them. The problem I always thought with TCP/IP was that you could not play the bigger games with 2500 -3500 points and combined arms, at a decent speed. Or the great scenarios like Tiger Valley or BotrytisII which are near the 10000 points. Also time zones make a difference. I am quite pleased to have played someone from every continent. Every country is more difficult : ) Of the top of my head I think 14.
  13. Polo- my cure for CM*1 which I hope I can bring to CMBN scenario designers!! is that large/huge maps used to weaken the German desire for uber tanks. It also makes light units very much more valuable. Also on huge maps artillery is less destructive than on small maps. Map design can equalise pretty much any force mix. However the greatest CM scenarios took several years to appear as late changes in the engine tanded to banjax the early scenarios, and in any event there is a huge learning curve for the designers to really maximise what is feasible.
  14. Players with pre-conditions. I heard of them. Your play rate is exceptional. I thought I was doing well but had to join a club that had a place to register games to keep a proper record. Finishing a game every 3 days for 10 years - whew !! Is it fun?
  15. Heavy stuff not like my normal medical posts
  16. Inever understood why anyone thought introducing extra rules was the correct way to provide balance to a game. I avoided them as tools for the unimaginative : ) Not meant as an insult to you Scipio - I am not sure I ever saw yours - and they may have been subtle. In war balance is unusual, what is the norm is that on the battlefield, weather or some other factor can be used to change balance. Restricting tank choices seems so mechanistic.
  17. Very nice. Thanks. Would you like to post them on the wikia? With of course all the detail not just the charts : ) http://combatmission.wikia.com/wiki/Combat_Mission:_Battle_for_Normandy
  18. Nice stuff costard! You sure live dangerously!! You know the toilet seat thingy. Well we re-fitted the bathrooms and they have those nice self-lowering seats. Invariably in her bathroom the seat is up!!! Guys we get a bad rap. TWo bathrooms inuse cos' she gets up around the 4 am mark ... and I don't.
  19. sburke - I did the hiding behind a wall test moons ago and rifle grenades were the only cause of casualties to hidden troops. However AFAIR the range was 140 and the overs and unders form three squads firing at a single point on the wall were impressive. If one had been testing A single squad then I may not have had any casualties as they were quite modest. It is an interesting point that all testing is done on the basis of 1 to 1 whereas we are going to being doing our darndest never to fight unless the odds are in favour, and hopefully by a lot. : )
  20. Just something that popped into my in-box and as I had been sating peer pressure was the most powerful ....... http://medicalxpress.com/news/2011-06-social-pressure-falsifies-memory.html the link is to an article on the same news With regard to serving your country before having rights. It seems strange that it is quoted as miltitary service. My stance here has always been that serving in say hospitals for 2 years before university, or peace corps or land army could all be service to the state. And no military class involved. The conceptt hat one has duties to the state is probably a useful bonding experience and provides a degree of national cohesion. There is the interesting human need for a feeling of permanence/ regularity. I will not embark on what percentage of the population seeks novelty as compared to those of a more sedate nature. Modern life is awash with constant change - not through any merit necessarily simply people seeing a new way to make money - and of course media exists on drama and change. \the monarchy forms an anchor of sorts for citizens where a revolving whirl of politicians [ of suspect persuasion] are the ones garnering the press. I can very well see how Fascism would have been attractive in the 20's and 30's. I think the problem /solution is to realise humans feel better for a cause or at least to have a focus. A war is one method, the olympics a marginally cheaper option. In both cases there is a length of time issue, cost, and bodies wrecked by the experience. The space race was probably a good one. Global warming/food shortage should be another. If I were to give soft western civilisation a cause that would be reducing energy consumption - and it is not too difficult a war to win is suitably lengthy and more practical use than the space race.. If you are too smart to believe in a God that saves all then this would be very satisfying religion replacement.
  21. So flax and potatoes seem to be the crops missing from the list so far. I did think the penultimate colour photo was peas.

  23. Peer pressure is perhaps the most potent item in changing behaviours.
  24. Just as it seems so aposite http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/intelligent-energy/how-to-eliminate-japan-8217s-nuclear-reactors-led-light-bulbs/7384?tag=nl.e660
  25. In the BF research on newbies complaining of too high a complexity how do you set up your objective tests? Are the noobies playing at a higher level than their capabilities? What percentage of the market is significant? Are all the noobies with problems RTS or WEGO? And are there explanations such as the manual does not agree with the game? Learning process is not optimised and is not varied? Is the UI friendly or confusing? Straw poll suspects UI not good. What might be thought strange is that video services like Vimeo/YouTube have not been used , apart from fans who are of coures demonstrating the fun, without most of the learning process. My gut feeling is that if one did a film of running a tank down a road, then looking from higher up, then plotting the various speed orders and the effect that creates on turning .......... getting through hedges, demolishing stone walls. Huge amount of visual fun information. Hardly a tough learning curve. And I could apply my thinking to other parts of the game. On a more fundamental level is the move to individual graphics and action in itself to fundamental level to provide fun per minute. In my experience everyone like tanks as they are fun and dramatic and with bocage you are in very unfriendly tank country. If I had been in BF's position I would have brought out a North Africa demo/cheap price. making use pretty much of the existing CMSF scenery with some WW2 era tanks and infantry to find the buggies or tune the combat and movement modes. Lots of playtesters and lots of fun.
