  1. Thanks for the update. Where can we dl the previous version until then? It's pretty much unplayable now if you're using any vehicles. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  2. Definitely a bug. I just had a Jagdpanzer bog and become immobile on pavement ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  3. Where can we dl the previous patch/version from as a stop-gap measure? Thanks. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR [This message has been edited by Samhain (edited 12-17-2000).]
  4. I know German tanks (and presumably armor of other nations) suffered extensive mechanical failures during the war for various reasons, but to have multiple light vehicles become immobile for no obvious reason seems to be stretching things--even if it is realistic, it sure isn't fun to waste points buying vehicles that bog right near their starting points at your edge of the map. I'll have to experiment more. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  5. I was playing a QB with the new 1.1b22 patch and had both an armored car and an Ostwind get immobilized in the grass without ever coming under enemy fire of any sort. This was in dry summer conditions. I've never seen any vehicles bog on their own in those conditions, only in snowy or damp/wet conditions. Could this be a bug with the new patch, or did I just experience incredibly bad luck? ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR [This message has been edited by Samhain (edited 12-16-2000).]

  7. Oddly, it doesn't look like GameSpy even reviewed Combat Mission, unlike nearly every other substantial (and often minor) gaming news/reviews site and magazine ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR [This message has been edited by Samhain (edited 12-15-2000).]
  8. Alt-q to quit the game, alt-s to save, alt-a to abort the current scenario. Click on the "hotkeys" button at the bottom of the game interface during a scenario to get the complete list. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  9. I used an Ostwind in a QB meeting engagement today to great effect. What seems to make it and the Wirbelwind stand out are the combination of huge ammo stores and a high rate of fire. They can just keep pumping out rounds turn after turn, almost incessantly. For practical purposes, their reload times are almost nil. Ammo counts: Ostwind 210H 40A (!), Wirbelwind 136H 64A The Ostwind has a slightly larger silhouette, but thicker frontal armor and better armor penetration and muzzle velocity than the Wirbelwind. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR [This message has been edited by Samhain (edited 12-15-2000).]
  10. I've been preaching the Wirbelwind (and Ostwind) anti-infantry gospel for some time based on frequent experience with them in CM and just wanted to second (or I guess third or fourth in this case ) their incredible utility in breaking up massed infantry advances and taking out lighter AFV's at the same time. The Wirbelwind, at least, is relatively cheap, decently armored, fairly fast, has tons of ammo, and quite powerful guns. Plus, it looks cool As noted above, though, watch out for arty and mortars. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  11. Done. Thanks for the alert. One reason CM might not be listed there is that most gaming media treat wargames and strategy games as different genres. Then again, they included the Sims, which does have strategy elements but certainly shouldn't be classed with most strategy games, imo. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  12. Just wanted to add my voice to those who would appreciate it if people would avoid racial slurs and epithets, including those aimed at the Japanese or Germans. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  13. It's funny, but watching The Longest Day again yesterday, they showed an instance of using a smoke gren for cover at the squad level--then again, a movie like that is hardly historical data What I don't understand is why something had to be used extensively to be included in CM. If it was used at all and wouldn't create excessive extra work for the CM team or inbalance the game, why not include it for the many players who enjoy hypothetical tactics and scenarios? I know people have raised this same point--and rightly--about obscure vehicles like the Sturmtiger and so forth. If the players want something (like running MG teams under certain circumstances), why not listen to them if an alteration or addition won't harm the overall game balance? Those who want to re-enact history strictly can of course refrain from using certain items and tactics, and the rest of us can have fun with them. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  14. This is sad news. I used to love Hogan's Heroes as a kid. I saw Werner Klemperer on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher a few years back--he seemed in pretty good health and certainly fine spirits then. Maybe you can catch it in reruns. As a classical music lover, I'm surprised to learn he was the son of Otto Klemperer (should have guessed), who was one of the greatest conductors of the century (his Mahler interpretations are particularly fine). ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  15. One serious problem of using tanks as transports (other than troops getting massacred, as mentioned), is that for practical purposes you need to stop the tanks for a full turn to dismount troops (two or three pauses often don't seem to work). Keeping tanks stationary defeats one of their major strengths. It's generally safer to use HT's to transport troops, though you of course don't always have that convenient option. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  16. Play the Drop to Destiny scenario and read the intro, and you'll see what the reviewer is talking about. That's an example of where Airborne troops begin scattered all over and get their butts kicked by the defense. Everyone knows that Airborne troops don't actually come parachuting down during the game, if that's what you mean. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  17. Here's a new CM review: http://www.gamestats.com/reviews/software/combatmission/ ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  18. I've also noticed the over-zelaous use of tank smoke and infantry charging out of damaged buildings when you least want them to ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  19. Check out the tactics section at http://www.gamesofwar.de , which features an extensive illustrated section on infantry formations. Without mortars, I always keep the HQ unit as far to the rear as possible, with its squads standing between it and harm's way, while still remaining in command, and giving a little room for the squads to maneuver and stay in contact before the HQ has to move too. I never lead with my HQ units. Seems to work. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR [This message has been edited by Samhain (edited 12-02-2000).]
  20. A few: Scott Adams and Infocom Games (esp. Zork I) on the TRS-80 Spy Hunter (Colecovision) Karateka (Apple II) Gauntlet (arcade) Miner 2049'er (Atari 400) Dark Castle, Shadowgate, Crystal Quest (early Mac--i.e., black and white) Wolfenstein 3D (PC, my first shooter--I never recovered ) Doom (PC, my first "online" game experience--I never recovered from that either) ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  21. No One Lives Forever Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (on DC) Superbike 2001 Combat Flight Sim 2 Unreal Fortress (UT mod) ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  22. Check out Gunslinger's mods too. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  23. Check out the tactics/articles sections at these sites: http://www.gamesofwar.de/ http://combathq.thegamers.net/ http://www.combat-mission.com/ http://mapage.cybercable.fr/deanco/ ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  24. Prayer Mass your Shermans so the Tiger can only fire at one at a time, if they're in front of each other. That shouldn't be allowed to happen, though. Get the Shermans where you can take flank or rear shots that will give you a chance of penetrating the Tiger's armor. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
  25. I'd like to second Splinty: please add dynamic lighting for fire, explosions, weapons fire, and headlights in CM2. It would greatly enhance the visual realism and immersion. ------------------ Hope you got your things together, Hope you are quite prepared to die. --CCR
