  1. I have scores of books on tanks, aircraft, weapons and WWII info.. but I find it very difficult to create a realistic OOB when making QBs. I'm sure there are people who know a whole lot more about this than me.. and if people were to post this data here, I would be more than happy to create a CM units database and host it on my website to help people that want to play realistic games kknow what to pick. If people would post unit selections for differing point values I could have the results viewalble by QB points, action type (ME, Probe, Attack.. etc) and obviously by country.. If people are interested in helping, start by posting here while I make up the database and set up my web server and DNS records... then people will be able to make their own record and OOB entries. What do you all think? Karch
  2. Oh, and Slappy.... can I call you Slappy? What I meant is I had the USS Tang submarine up on that hill... Displacement: 1870 tons (surf.), 2391 tons (subm.); l. 311.7'; b. 27'; Speed: 20.25k (surf.), 8.75k (subm.); Test Depth. 400'; Armament. 1-5"/25;torpedo tubes 6-21" . fwd, 4-21" aft; Complement:. 6 officers - 60 enlisted men; Sorry Capn' we just took a mortar round on the main deck 5" gun and the the enemy is out of Torpedo range... Ok Jonsey, let's just back her down this hill and get her fixed up for the next battle.. Great post Slapdragon.... Thanks for the laugh. [This message has been edited by karch (edited 01-16-2001).]
  3. Yeah... I think you two are right. I also agree with the previous posts that said if I were an infantryman, I'd like the support... or at least a bigger target than myself nearby. I probably will move him behind the hill to keep the points.. It's PROBABLY what would have happened. It seems that attacks that would have stalled out in a real battle get played out much further in CM because, well, they aren't real men and it doesn't matter as much if 3/4 of them die in an attack if you end up with the VLs. I think I just read a post from Steve or Charles to that effect and I am looking forward to CMII with much smarter atuo-cease fires when both sides have taken loses that would have stopped fighting in reality. Awsome game!!
  4. von Lucke... Oh yeah.... THAT one has a damaged gun too... you might as well advance down into the town right down that central avenue..... yup, pull that sherman just a little bit away from that church. thanks for the great game.. I hope I DON"T have to make that decision with you...
  5. oh crap! I meant tanK ... tank with a K... oh shoot! and gamEY.... man, what a dolt.. OK I hate the term gamy... but is it correct to continue to use a vehicle with damaged main gun as infantry support? Using MG only obviously. I had a JPIV that just had it's main gun KOd by a stupid mortar hit. It was on overwatch WAY back on the map... would it be wrong to rush him up and use his armor and MGs to support my troops in a town? Probably, but I'm curious what would be done historically. I can see both sides... 1) Tank gun KOd, local commander says withdraw and get the gun fixed so the tank can fight another day... 2) Tank gun KOd, local commander says don't just stand there.. you've got a MG and more armor than any of the men you are supposed to be supporting.. now get up there and help out the grunts! What do you guys think.. Tony Kerstan... this is our game... how do you feel.. Don't want to do anything improper. I know it's a game.. but I like trying to be as historical as possible.. it just makes me feel better about the games. I love a fun ahistorical slugfest.. but sometimes I like trying to use historical tactics even if they aren't the best.. because that's the way it really was. 6. i agree with the polishing idea. tooth paste works great as a polishing compound. .. no gell, only paste. the abrasive is really mild and you can buff through the scratch. scott karch
  7. i run my own server out of my house. i only have 386kb going up though. what kind of traffic does the sight get. if i can handle the throughput, i'd be happy to host the site. i manage my own dns servers too and could manage the dns records if you have a domain name. scott karch combat@karchfamily.com www.karchfamily.com
  8. I really like the concept. I do have some questions... 1. What does BTS have to say about the concept? 2. If you are in uncontested control of the flags, the game does end at the predefined end.. right? 3. I would like a more complecated method of deciding whether or or not to extend the game. If you have 2 major and 1 minor flags in your possesion and your oponent contests the 3rd minor flag, should the play extend, or do you just take the win. 4. how about the person who is winning getting to decide if they want the game to end right then or to fight off the last second charge of 2 man squads. just thinking.. I like it though.
  9. hey Titan, Isn't that scrum just Australian for coffee break. I thought that's where all the players leaned on each others shoulders for a quick breather? Great game though! My sister's fiance plays for one of the biggest teams in Boston. He was even on the cover of a couple magazines this year. scott
  10. Very interesting.... Yes, I read that this was a patch to eliminate characters that would cause cross platform mac/pc problems. A mac can actually name a file scott/game2.txt If sent to a windows machine, that would cause problems because NO files are allowed to use / or \ in filenames. Macs, on the other hand, use a : (colen/colon)sp? internally to handle directories and paths. hardddrive:applications:games:combat mission You don't see that very often, but a few applications have you type in paths that way. Hope this helps.... Scott Karch.... MacAddict
  11. hey elvis, congrats on the child and good luck. my wife and i just had our first baby 3 weeks ago. i'm holding him in my left arm and typing with my right hand.... sorry about the lack of caps.... no extra fingers! you are right about cutting back on games... you will probably still get in as many pbm games, but i don't ever have enough time for ip any more. wish i did.. but i'm either at work or with my son, mason, holding, feeding and changing. it's about a 1 hour cycle. good luck, it's great www.karchfamily.com for his pictures.... and if anyone wants another pbm, pick any scenario ocook up a qb and send it to combat@karchfamily.com scott karch
  12. Porta... is that your real last name, or are you taking a name from the Sven Hassel line of books. Just curious.
  13. About the iMac comment. Come now, the iMac? Cute, but so what? Well, it's faster than P3 and P4s at combat mission, I can do Digital Video work out of the box that almost no stock PC except for Sony can handle. I use Macs and PCs at work developing FileMaker database solutions and know that PCs are faster at some things than Macs. But when people come up with crap like calling Macs cute but not real computers, well, I figure they just have an axe to grind and don't have any facts to back it up. I have to say, I hide my PCs under my desk, and show of my iBook, G4 and iMacs on top of desks. Sure it doesn't make it run any better, but why not have a little style in your computer. I don't mind paying more for design. Do you like Yugos or BMWs? They both get you around... but STYLE. Mac PC debates will never go away, but man I hate the ones that pick on the fact that Apple actually takes a little pride on the way their computers look. All I can say is they all look better than any PC... except maybe the Vaio laptop. That's a cool PC. karch
  14. -------------------------- Actually you cant crawl on and around them. A couple of poor GI's get the punishment detail of walking around that field and asking kids and bozos to climb down. They have to wear full gear including a helmet. -------------------------- You're absolutely right. But while we were there for 3 days taking pictures of every tank and gun from every angle... very time consuming... people were climbing over all the tanks... crawling down the barrels and things like that. Very dangerous. You could really get hurt falling off a tank. Even falling from the turret to the decking could crack a skull. I'm pretty sure it was more for the safety of the people than for the tanks. The only soldiers I saw were staying inside the museum keeping cool. Even when the lawn crew came around and weed whipped around the tanks, they didn't say anything to the people. Not that it was right, but that's what people do there. I have to admit, I even broke the rules to get a few great pictures from on a couple tanks. I will get a few hundred pictures on my site later today. I'll post when they are up. scott
  15. Did you ever get the FileMaker conversion I sent you? I converted the excel file into a mac/pc database application. You can do finds easier, sort by any heading, and print reports. I built both the Mac and Windows installer for a free self-running application. Let me know if you did not get it and I will post it on my website. karch
  16. yes, they are all outside rusting... although it takes a long time to rust through inches of steel! Most of the smaller metal fittings and ammo boxes are all rusted and falling off. They have a planned expansion of the building to contain almost ALL of the existing tanks. This will take years, but they have started a huge refurbishment project where they pull one tank off the field, refurb it and store it inside until the huge building is done. One benefit of the current situation, is that you can walk all around the vehicles, even crawl under and on top of them. In the museum, they will be crammed in side by side so you will never be able to see them in profile. You just couldn't build a big enough building to do that. Right now all the US tanks are not on the field with non US tanks, they are along the median of a road into the base. Miles of tanks, one after another.... all rusting. They do have almost all the heavies. All the really heavy developmental tanks you see in books. Everything except the HUGE T-26 I think it was. I will make an effort to post a handful of the 3000 images I took this summer. Any specific tanks you want to see? karch (btw, I'd love a few more PBMs. My main opponent just joined the airforce and I only have 1 game going.) Any size game, any side, any type engagement. Will make best effort at keeping play and units historical.
  17. I'm sure you're good enough to play right now. Let me know if you want to play a really small quckbattle via TCP IP. My IP address is 64.2.239.122 Give me a phone call at 773- setting up and 583-6272 if you want help setting up. Make sure you have the latest beta patch loaded. karch
  18. I think you are mistaken, the Patton museum at Fort Knox (I belive) has a King Tiger. Aberdeed used to have a Tiger I. It was loaned to Germany... and Germany decided that it was theirs and were not going to return it. An unnammed American with German political contacts, contacted Aberdeen and made an agreement that if he could get back the Tiger to America, that he would be able to keep it and FULLY RESTORE it at his expense... for 2 years. Then being returned to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds for inside display. This should be completed sometime in the next 5 years and we will be able to see the Tiger I again. I took a trip this summer to the Proving gounds and took about 3000 pictures and am trying to get them all organized. I have lots of Quicktime VR panoramas of the grounds, and Quicktime VR objects of certain tanks and guns. If you want to see a little of it.. please go to http://www.karchfamily.com/aberdeen/ to see a couple objects and VRs I showed the Proving grounds. karch
  19. sorry you got hit. what a waste of time to rebuild your c:. trying to find a silver lining: at least you probably have a nice clean registry, unfraggd swap file and a nice clean system. one of the few tings good about apple's dismal market share (i'm a diehard macaddict) is that there are fewer hackers and virus writers attacking macs. not meant as a windows slam, just an observation. scott karch
  20. I have no idea how hard it would be to put into the application... but the ability to enter domain names would be much easier than dealing with constantly changing DHCP IP addresses. With sites like dyndns.com (dynamic dns.com) you set up an account, say karch.dyndns.com and run software on your mac/pc that checks what your IP address is as often as you specify.. and uploads it to their server automatically. This way you never need to look up your IP address... your new domain will always point to your computer. People could use some form of their online username from CM to connect for IP games. I don't know how hard it would be for CM to resolve the domain name, but it would be much easier for people to remember a domain name than an IP address... that's why they made them! just my 2 cents Karch (happy birthday to me.. happy birthday to me.. happy birthday to scotty....... happy birthday to me) turned 32 an hour ago.
  21. The tracks too... I rember seeing the Tiger rumbling down the street and realizing the tracks were T-34 tracks. Take a look and you'll see the wide pitch tracks with a kind of waffle pattern in the cast track. T34 tracks have a very wide pitch... or length compared to the tiger. Once we got a shot of the non-overlapping wheels, I knew it was some sort of worked up T34. They did an amazing job with the superstructure though. scott
  22. Phoenix, I think the person you were refering to is me and I'm sorry. I hit a really busy spell at work and the game fell between the cracks because I had so many other games. I know it upsets people, but not evereyone just bailing on games because they are jerks. I'm sorry if it seemed that way. I don't recall seeing any requests for (hey, gonna return that game?) or anything like that. I just plain forgot. Once IP came out, I thought it would be a good time to try and pick a game again. I'm sorry if I offended you. My main oponent just joined the Airforce and will not be able to play for months and I really need to find more players. Sorry I upset you so much, it wasn't on purpose. scott karch
  23. OK, I am a bonehead. I did not read the instructions and put the additional files into my system folder in the extensions folder instead of the Combat Mission folder like the read me said
  24. OK, I am a bonehead. I did not read the instructions and put the additional files into my system folder in the extensions folder instead of the Combat Mission folder like the read me said. So, kiddies, as they say RTFM (read the "fine" manual) or readme files. IP works fine now, but I am having problems seeing any text on my screen. It seems that the standard ATI drivers that ship with the new iBooks need some help. I'll post what version of drivers works once I get it going. scott karch
  25. I have a similar setup in my condo building. DSL into an Airport base station that acts as a router. I got 4 IP addresses from my ISP, one is used by the router and everyone on the network connects via DHCP and gets the same kind of IP address you were talking about. 1.0.0.1 or something. I set up my personal machines to manually assign the IP addresses, so I have 3 computers with static IP addresses on the network. If you get tricky, you can set up a machine with a static IP address in the bogus stack of addresses like, 1.0.0.222 and have the router forward any IP packets that hit it to the 1.0.0.222 address... you. It's a bit of work, and you have to manually assign all the ports (IP ports not hardware ports) you want forwarded. Hope this is not too confusing. Please post more questions here and I'll try and help. scott karch
