Meanwhile, the office of Russia's prosecutor general has asked the country's Supreme Court to declare the unit a "terrorist organisation" in an apparent attempt to prevent its fighters being treated as conventional prisoners of war.

Let's hope the deals made behind the scenes hold.

Gpig sums up my feelings and I just despair for what is happening.

Any success for the Russians is too much. They deserve none. And it's frustrating when they do find some, here and there. That's war, of course.

It's that question of do they not realize that while Russia exists - there will always be wars and genocides on the continent? Or do they seriously hope that next time Russia will be ground to a halt somewhere near Warsaw or Riga and they will sigh with relief for another 5-10 years, before Russia comes back again?

Yep people should understand this, BUT the vast majority of folk are what Steve rightly called unsophisticated and want just simple messages, they don’t understand complexity and just focus on their day to day living with little regard for what’s outside their horizon.

The Mood music is changing in Europe and  the world and it is not helping Ukraine.

I hope what Steve said a few pages back is true and that the work is done and Ukraine have enough on hand to finish the job as I fear there might be a window on how much help is given, especially if it looks like Ukraine is winning.

Where I am in the UK I have not heard folk on the street mentioning this, but to be honest I don't tend to hang around listening 😉.

What I have seen is an increase in numbers of blue and yellow flags outside houses.  Of course what happens in one area may not represent wider regions.

Yep my neck of the woods is very "positive" towards UK support towards Ukraine of the war. I live in a small village and folk have a reasonable life style.

Just a comment I picked up on a BBC 2 Talk show hosted by Mr Vine as I was driving somewhere and I thought hmmm the mood can change.

So  I agree at the moment the UK on the whole seems to be backing the level of support we are giving. I guess cynically it’s a great testing range for our new weapon systems. Seeing Brimstone and NLaw in use and tweaking them if any issues found.

As ever Steve is pretty spot on with his analysis of the situation that has led to the economic instability and there are a lot of causes that have nothing to do with Ukraine.

But for the unsophisticated who are more akin to goldfish the last thing they hear and if it’s simple is what gets the blame. Just human nature and it’s exploited by those trying to achieve power.

So there will be pressure building at some stage to scale back expenditure. As Noted by Steve...

I don't expect the unsophisticated "blame game" mentality to understand this, so I agree that if the war drags on there will be some degree of pressure within some countries, and the West generally, to scale back support for Ukraine in some way.

Ultimately I think Steve is spot on with this. I think the timescale maybe sooner than a year, but the ultimate sentiment is I think correct.

    Quote

The critical phase of support for Ukraine has already been successfully completed, so a major scaling back of support in a year's time won't likely matter.

(I hope so but of course we could always be wrong...)

My point in what I wrote is that we can not assume that Ukraine will always have support from the West for unlimited aid so the sooner Russia is kicked out the sooner the unsophisticated can be focused on some other issue..

Has anyone fighting the war come across Russians who are being killed by their own commanders or Chechen Soldiers

On another forum this has been mentioned and it's from watching the interviews with the Russian POWs. They have said it during the interviews. Not sure how we will know for sure if true as it could be just a bogeyman story put around the Russian units to keep them "motivated".

Of course it could be true in some cases. We will never be certain unless an incident happens in front of a cctv camera and caught on film.

Guess home is home and it's better to build Europe here, now that more people seen it and have an idea what personal ideas they want to bring here from abroad.

Yep an unintended consequence of the war, people getting to see how other countries behave and operate by staying there. My whole world view was changed after a year as an exchange student in America with folk from all over the world. That one year was the most influential on my education than any amount of time spent in a classroom.

I hope they have learnt good lessons and that Ukraine benefits.

While foreign pressure on Ukraine to accept a ceasefire and 'negotiate' will only rise over time. So with your 'pause' you have just voluntarily ceded the initiative and shifted back to a long game Putin can play and win

Yep the mood music is shifting here in the UK with dire economic forecasts and costs going to hit worst the poorest with a predicted loss of 20% disposable income.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-61469532

Already I have heard mention by folk on the street in the UK that we should not be spending so much money in Ukraine and we should be helping the cost of living crisis at home.

The war in Ukraine is being blamed for these problems and while their is still popular support once people have to choose heating or food the support will slip away and political posturing move to focus on the economic crisis heading our way. Many families don't have a 20% margin to absorb the price rises coming down the tracks.

Ukraine has to win soon and can't afford to wait until winter so let's hope Russian forces do just collapse with a few well aimed kicks with the fresh reserves and weapons systems being brought to bear. I am hoping that August is possible.

Could have been an exchange between prisoners and wounded. something done behind the scenes.

Hmmm not what I would call behind the scenes.

    1. Fifty-three heavily injured fighters were taken to the town of Novoazovsk, and another 211 to Olenivka, the deputy defence minister says

There was no easy way out of the situation and if they get their fighters home out of Russian hands job done.

I am just not sure I would trust Russia, but you have to play with the hand you are given.

I have the utmost respect for the Ukrainian fighters and what they have achieved against overwhelming odds.

Let's see how it plays out...

Repeat... no white flag at this point.

    Hmmm

BBC this morning is saying that the wounded are receiving medical "care" by Russians and the non wounded are in another location being "processed" by the Russians so it does seem like the position has been given up?

Let's hope Ukraine gets everyone back in one piece.

It's certainly going to be spun by Russia as a surrender.

  9. Interesting comments re the possibility of China sharing data with the Russian forces. Not sure if that is true, I guess possible and maybe there are other explanations of how quickly drone Operators have been targeted, such as Russian eyes on the ground and some quick thinking?

To get data from China back to the Russian units seems a stretch but who knows...

Also shows what we have all known that the youth playing computer games can help defend their country…..

  10. Morning folks while military aid is essential for Ukraine I want to draw attention to other aid that is available and that folk in Ukraine might not be aware of.

I saw this on local TV the other night and I want to ensure the news is spread.

So I would ask any one with Ukrainian friends to take a look and pass this on as it is a unique opportunity that will make a difference to those that succeed in the application process and might make a big difference to Ukraine.

Oxford University is running a scheme to fully fund 20 Ukrainians to study for one year at Oxford.

FULLY funded so they get accommodation and even £7500 spending money for the year.

    https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/fees-and-funding/fees-funding-and-scholarship-search/graduate-scholarship-scheme-for-ukraine-refugees

Applications to be made by Monday June 20th.

Please pass this on as it is IMO a fantastic opportunity.

To the rest of you, I suggest not responding.  He obviously thinks he's above the need to defend his points.  Probably because he has no comeback to the ease in which his positions are shown to be full of holes.

    After some time.....

This is a game that Russia knows well.  Plenty of Soviet trainers were participating in every conflict the US was involved in during the Cold War.  And there's some sources that show that Russians were helping the Taliban.

Karma is paying back years of crap from Russia let’s hope it's a game changer.

As for our British Defence minister I do wish he would keep his gob shut on stuff like that, he didn't need to say it, even if I or most folk have no problem with how Ukraine uses the weapons to win the war.

I wish our politicians would take some lessons from the Baltic countries or others keeping what they are upto closer to their chests. No need for propaganda own goals.

Watching putler’s right hand clutching the table corner in his last tv images conforts my opinion that he had a brain stroke after the Moskva get lost in sea.

We need to see more to be certain but the left side of his body was more interesting to watch, looked like he had no strength?

He certainly looks in trouble and reminds me of my father who had strokes.

The grip goes so maybe why he was filmed from that angle?
